Gone In 41 Seconds — Police Quick to Kill Korean Artist

LA HABRA, Calif. — On the afternoon of December 31, 2007, two police officers encountered Michael Cho in the parking lot of a liquor store in La Habra, a small, generally quiet city in Orange County, California. It didn’t take long for the meeting to go bad. After less than a minute the officers unleashed a barrage of bullets on the 25-year-old artist, ending his life - and setting off an ongoing cascade of protests across Southern California’s Korean American community.

Computerized police logs obtained by New America Media suggest the officers quickly turned to deadly force when they confronted Cho, whom they suspected of vandalism. According to the Computer Automated Transcript documenting the incident, at 2:04 p.m. the cops contacted their dispatcher to say they’d located Cho. “Out with the subject near the liquor store,” the transcript reads. Just 41 seconds later they radioed dispatch again, this time saying they’d shot the suspect and now needed paramedics to attend to him. “Shot fired, Suspect down, Medics requested,” reads the transcript. In the aftermath of the killing, Cho’s family has publicly condemned the department, saying the officers rushed to shoot Cho, rather than using less lethal tools like pepper spray or Taser stun guns to subdue him.

“The police killed my son like a dog,” Cho’s mother, Honglan Cho, recently told the La Habra City Council. According to Shelly Lynn Kaufman, an attorney for the Cho family, the fusillade of bullets left ten holes in his body.

I’m glad these stories are now being pushed out there. The entire country should be macro-sensitive to all stories of police brutality, yes, but ESPECIALLY in cases of police brutality against men and women of color. Because it’s been going on far longer than you can even imagine

First experiments with stencils on ceramics. The glaze was originally Liner White, but turned dark because of the slip underneath. Red stain on the outside. Original stencil inspired by Radiohead's King of Limbs and the associated art work.

In real life this glaze looks just like oxidized brass- I think I found my new favorite glaze. My professor liked the whole piece so much she informed me I that I MUST keep it for critique, before remembering that as an art therapy student instead of an art student I do not have to go to any.

Reflection, 2013

This is an installation piece that a friend and I put together for our school's Celebration of the Arts. The theme we had to work with was reflection, which we chose to show in the context of inner reflection and meditation. We chose to use the idea of a Japanese garden as a point of reference, while adding our own components as well. The monochromatic palette is meant to represent the peace and clarity that can be achieved through inner reflection. Most of the components we put together ourselves, with the exception of the faces (more of which hung from the ceiling throughout the rest of the small room this was located in), which were given to us to use. There are real fish in the bowls, which were filled with water and meant to represent a pond. We, along with a team of helpers, folded all of the cranes and lanterns ourselves. Throughout the opening and the day of the exhibit itself, we had two performers meditating for hours on end. all of this was accompanied by Brian Eno's ambient piece Thursday Afternoon.

So prom was last Friday, and I designed and made my own dress. I also made my boyfriend’s vest and bow tie out of the same material (blue tie, grey vest). The pictures are terrible, but it looked beautiful once it was pressed!
