Things that you used to find easy now seem difficult, and things that were already hard now feel impossible.

Suddenly talking to your friends now feels like it's a chore, it's no longer as simple as reading what they've said and replying accordingly. It's sitting there and looking at their texts and trying to decipher and make sense of what they have written.

Everything now seems to take so much longer to process, and by the time you've worked out what they've put, you're now already feeling overstimulated, overwhelmed and no longer know how to respond.

So instead what do you do? You just sit there staring at your screen. And if you're anything like me you might even put your phone down because the idea of replying right there and then gives you anxiety. It all just feels that little bit too much.

Just know if you've ever experienced this, you're not crazy, and you're not a bad person. You likely just have a lot of unresolved trauma that you've experienced over the years and you've not yet had the time to come to terms with it all.

Also if you're reading this, just know that you are important and you do matter. If you've ever thought that you've had to work extra hard over the years to get people to like you, I'm sorry that you've ever felt the need to do that. Please know that you are enough just the way you are.

go back to work. fulfill your duty. fix your head. fix yourself.

The pose, clothes and Keyblade - Very good model! But with the head's shape and the goatee being this far up it looks strange. Like he's vomiting out a squid. The eye circles... I get it's his sunken eyes but the shade is too dark it looks like the eyes are floating in front of his face? I get each figure has to stick to the brand's original base design but a tiny bit of tweaking wouldn't have hurt that much, there are characters who do get tweaks. Or his brows and forehead being so defined but his cheek bones aren't? Give that old man some veins on that bald head, don't be shy! Let that old man look old!

It can’t create art because art is fundamentally human: art is about the human experience, and AI knows nothing about that, and never can.

(it’s also like an absolute fucking environmental blight, we really don’t need to be burning the earth to make fanfiction ffs)

I often think that everything we write is someone trying to explore what it means to be human in this world. Telling stories is one of the most deeply human things we do; making art of any kind is one of the most fundamental human urges. Storytelling and creating art predate written history; they predate tools, they predate cities, they predate agriculture. They certainly long, long predate capitalism and industrialization. There is something inside of us that drives us to do this and has driven us to do this even if we don’t know where our next meal is coming from or where we’re sleeping tonight. Stories and art are at the core of what and who we are as a species.

If you like to write, if you like to read, please think about this: none of your favourite writers or authors used AI to create. Not one of them. Obviously the vast majority of them predate its existence entirely. But I promise you that the people writing today whose work you like aren’t using AI. They’re using their own brains and creativity and humanity and that’s what you like about their work. That’s what speaks to you that AI cannot ever replicate.

If you want to write / if you do write, and want to be better, or despair that you can never create what you want to create — still, please don’t use AI. AI will never help you make the art you want. Because the writing you love and admire came from such a wildly different and painfully human process, one that churning something out with AI can never replicate.

The joy of writing is in doing it over and over and over again, and despairing that you’re a hack, that you’ll never write anything worth a damn, and getting better despite it all. It’s in making yourself a student of language and words, an observer of the human experience, someone who seethes with jealousy and admiration over every sentence you wish you’d written. It’s born out of a love of words that comes from reading and writing, and trying to form your own word and your own characters and your own plot twists.

It comes from practicing over and over and over again. It’s an art and a craft. It’s something you hone. Of course you read other writers’ works (I don’t know what business you have writing if you’re not also reading; they’re two sides of the same coin), of course you take inspiration from them, of course you borrow ideas and experiment with themes and spin their ideas into something of your own. That’s part of the creative process. That’s part of what you get out of being in conversation with other creators and artists and writers. But that’s not what AI content is.

The only way you can get better as a writer is to read and write and use your brain and your voice and your creativity. And if your brain and your voice aren’t producing the words you want in the way you want, you have to keep trying. You have to keep reading and writing and editing until they do. It might take a lifetime, but that’s the craft. That’s the shit sandwich that Elizabeth Gilbert talks about.

There have been so many times I have been near tears (or in tears!) in frustration, thinking about how I know I have the ability to create what I want but the words just aren’t…wording, the story isn’t there yet, things aren’t coming together. And maybe I’m an egomaniac but I want that to come from me, not a soulless computer that’s burning the world down around us.

And even if I didn’t care about it being soulless, it being an environmental scourge, it being borderline theft — it’s not good. The writing it generates isn’t good. And I will always care about this, even if none of the other considerations apply. And it can’t be good for all the reasons I listed at the beginning: it’s not human, and making art is a deeply, essentially human thing. Our humanity is what makes art compelling or interesting or important. It’s not the words themselves.

I have never read anything AI-generated and felt jealous, felt envious, felt like the sentence was a beautiful little talisman I wanted to carry around with me. I have never read anything AI-generated and felt a character spring off the page. I have never read anything AI-generated and thought it was better than what I can write. More often than not, I read it and think “this isn’t good / this isn’t right / I could do it better” and I just want to edit it or scrap it entirely (during my brief foray into using it in the corporate world).
