Figuring out how to be kind to yourself is so important. I’ve always had really high standards for myself, especially academically. And while that can be a strength, in some ways it has also been one of my greatest weaknesses. The past two years of medical school have forced me to really face that part of myself. My mom has coined a line for when she has talked me through those moments, “Be kind to my Lauren”. It has taken me way too long to realize that in those moments I am the only one standing in my way. And when I’m willing to let up, I’m finally able to use that energy towards positive things. This is a lesson I’m still learning, one that feels very crucial as I am preparing for an exam that I know will have a major impact on my future. I still wrestle with this every day, but every time I am able to think more positive thoughts about myself and my efforts, I know that I am one step closer to my goal.
