it's important to be sceptical of the field of psychiatry. the people with the most power in the field are people who experienced the least oppression in their education and career. e.g. neurotypicals, white people, and men. and when you grow up without oppression, it's easy to develop biases against others. these come through in SO many studies and diagnoses.
once you start noticing the horrifying levels of racism, misogyny, ableism, and sanism in the psychiatric industry you just can't stop noticing. the "warrior gene" being used to tell people of colour that their anger isn't due to the way people treat them, it's due to their genetics. kitty genovese's case and the "bystander effect" being used to cover up the misogyny and neglect of the police force. things I got taught IN SCHOOL like they were concrete truths of the human psyche.
you don't have to be constantly on edge about it. if you get paranoid or stressed out easily, I want you to leave the criticism and scepticism to others if you'd like to. you just have to remember to value the people in your life (THIS INCLUDES YOURSELF!) who live with neurodivergencies ranging from ptsd to npd to did and beyond.
and people who will end up being targeted by the bigotry within the field! people who get misdiagnosed because of their demographic. people whose struggles get ignored because the system is geared to dismiss them. at this point in time, the psychiatric industry has hurt SO many of my friends and loved ones. it's a bit infuriating.
finally, a useful reminder: the dsm is an insurance manual made by an american organisation and does not contain the truth of the universe. it contains some arbitrary frameworks decided by a few smart people with a lot of biases.
rereblogging this because:
the imperialism of a grouping mechanism doesn't make it entirely useless
when we use terms like ADHD and BPD as triangulation points, they make themselves useful in knowing that my internality has a possible friend in yours, or that there are particular spectra we could talk to each other about and never agree on even though in other ways we're similar.
the DSM's focus on fitting in with polite society is a set of thresholds that can be useful for triangulation
one of the core diagnostic requirements in the NHS for anything termed "disorder" is: are these things causing your life to be disordered. and that's a _slightly_ different lens, and it's a useful one, because it's just that little bit more compassionate.
imperial-rooted medicine loses a lot of details because it's so focused on compression. but it _does_ give us a lot of communication points, and it _does_ give us a shared map (and it _does_ need to be improved)
scrunc
they're so skrunkly your honour

she took too long to get in for Mermista's liking... sadly the "quick fire" method didn't work either.

Looking for a Supercorp story. Lena has re-purposes the Lexo-suits as sort of an emergency medical responder. Lena is hurt and before she passes out has her AI start the program for the suits to go and rescue people. After treatment the suits move people to a warehouse with cots to recover.
Fandom: Supergirl
Pairing: Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor
Please, help us find these fics! Leave your suggestions in the comments. Thank you! πππ¦ΈββοΈ
Edit:
@chapel728 has found their fic. It's chapter 2 of "Uncertainty Principle" by ThiaKerrigan.

I never thought I'd show up on a lost-and-found. I'm strangely honoured.
(reblogging posts from my alt, because i don't have the discipline to maintain it so I'm reconsolidating them)
