The first time she saw him was at a meeting with the Roman Republic. Young, impressionable looking, and certainly not fitting in. The man slunk next to Caesar, shoulders canting downward whenever the almost-emperor so much as glanced his way. Monifa felt a rumble rising out her chest, and the woman quieted it. A silent inhale proved her suspicions, abuse, and golden eyes narrowed. She was here today on behalf of Egypt, on behalf of the new queen that she served, but Set take her if she would let an innocent suffer.
The month was in Spring, flowers blooming here in ways that they never did in Egypt, and the men themselves seemed restless. Once Caesar sat, she took the place opposite him, her robes loosely falling to the floor, hiding the dagger underneath. Monifa then cocked her head, and spoke.
âI requested to meet you alone, Julius. Who is this?â
Mariusâ gaze flitted between Caesar and the woman as she sat opposite of him. Honestly, he wasnât sure how the Egyptians had convinced Caesar to meet with someone who wasnât male or the ruler of Egypt. But she seemed to exude power, like a rumble through the room.
The young senator kept his place at Caesarsâ side, almost bowing his head when dark eyes were turned on him. He raised his head slightly when Caesar waved a hand, dismissing her seeming concern. Marius read it for what it was- anger. âThis is Senator Marius, a former general of ours. He helps go over many of our political arrangements now. He is one of my prized assets.â
Marius nodded to the woman. âIt is a pleasure,â he said, before taking his seat at Caesarâs left. Never the right; he knew better. He kept his eyes cast downward, never looking to Caesar, though occasionally looking to Monifa. He still kept close to Caesar.
Caesar gestured to her. âYou said you came her with an offer for the Roman Republic from Egypt. Let us hear it to see if it is worth anything.â
