Stats vs Theory: A VS Battle Theory
So... I've had something of a realization. When it comes to VS Battles and what not, I genuinely do not really care about stats, not to the point where I dismiss them entirely because stats are a big factor in most VS debates, but I'm personally more interested in another aspect of them.
See, I've narrowed it down to two kinds of people, the Stats Debaters and the Theory Debaters, and there is a difference. Stats people make the shows (Death Battle, Firey Fan Fights, whatever else is out) while theory people tend to make the polls (Myself but also things like DBX, One Minute Melee and other type shows).
Stats people are, as the name implies, more focused on the stats and feats of a character, like how powerful is this attack, how much faster is this character, how much force does it take to leave this impact, etc.
Theory people, well I personally am more interested in the theoretical aspects of a match-up.
Donald Duck vs Daffy Duck is a fantastic example for this, because yeah you can go into stats to examine how much more durable Daffy is over Donald, who is the physical strongest, how much of a stat boost Donald gets when he rages, but as a theory debater, I am more interested in the idea of "toon-force limits".
See, whoever has the most stats doesn't quite interest me as the idea that their toon-force powers are also gonna to hinder one of them. The idea that toon-force users can only die when it's part of the bit and that it's funnier that they die instead of their opponent. Like when Donald gets injured, it's funny because he's going to rage and lose his temper, but when Daffy gets injured, it's funny because he is the ultimate patsy.
Toon-force is a fascinating topic to theorize about for Vs Debates because, theoretically it is invulnerable and a total win-con, take for example Saitama vs Popeye. Sure Popeye had the stats, but he is also a cartoon character while Saitama, for all intents and purposes of this discussion, is not. However, that doesn't mean that Popeye couldn't theoretically lose to Saitama.
See, Popeye cartoons also follow a formula, Popeye gets into a conflict, at some point the conflict overpowers him, he pulls out the Spinach and kicks ass. The formula is set up this way so there are stakes and tension before Popeye pulls out the Spinach, so really Popeye doesn't just have Toon-force, he also has plot armour.
Plot armour is... a next to meaningless term because people will use it to describe everything, but in essence I use "Plot Armour" to mean that this character has to survive up to this point because the plot demands they do, less of how the Wet Bandits in Home Alone survive paint cans and blowtorches, and more like Popeye having to get to X point in a cartoon before he pulls out the spinach.
Of course, Vs Debates completely negate plot armour, the entire plot is that someone is going to lose, in theory. So in theory, Popeye doesn't have the plot armour protection, so in theory he could still lose to any character in a fight, but because Stats debaters will pull out absurdly massive calculations for his feats, and theory debaters will cite toon-force, Popeye usually wins.
Stats definitely have the bigger part in Vs Debates, obviously someone who can punch greater than someone else can block is more likely to win. Theory is also an important part though, really all Vs Debate is in the long run is theory.
