Prologue
-POV 1-
I wake up to a soft thud on my study table. I sit upright to find Celia standing over my desk, placing a cup of coffee on the surface. I smile in gratitude, and she returns my smile before heading out the door.
I turn my attention back to the Advanced Geometry textbook in front of me. It was arrogant to read a math textbook, but I had no choice. I injured my hand last week, which means that right now, it's bandaged and preventing me from practising questions—practice I so desperately need to pass my models next week.
I sigh and take a sip of my coffee.
I really wish I could practice these questions.
-POV 2-
I wish she would just let me read the textbook.
I watch as Chelsea paces across the room, intently focused on the Advanced Geometry textbook in her hands. She suddenly looks up.
"Aren't you done yet?"
"Aeons ago, really." I twirl my pen.
She gives me on of her looks.
"Well?" she asks.
"25."
"Good. Next question."
I interrupt her before she starts dictating the next problem.
"Cant we stop here for today?"
I get another look.
"You know the deal. Four hours a day."
I sigh.
As she continues with the question, I glance at the clock on my table.
I've got three more hours to go.
-POV 1-
Shit, I've only got three more hours to go.
I stare at the time ticking past on the wall clock.
I'm doing a quick revision of all the important formulas for the exam. I'm going to need some confidence walking into that exam hall.
I decide to take a break and head to the kitchen to make myself some breakfast. I'm careful to not make much noise so as to not wake Celia, who has always been a lighter sleeper than I am. I grab my food and head to my table.
Before I start reading, I grab my phone and set an alarm for one hour before my exam.
-POV 2-
Beep. Beep. Beep.
I snooze the alarm before turning over in my bed.
But I am not allowed to fall back asleep as Chelsea shuffles into my room, a pouch in her hands. She seats herself at my dressing table.
"Wake up. Your exam is in an hour," she scolds me before opening her pouch. She starts applying subtle layers of concealer and powder on her face.
"I'm resting my brain for that very reason," I explain.
She gives me a look.
"Fine." I sit up in my bed.
I rush through showering and dress up. My sister spouts random equations at me as I eat breakfast. I give her a hug before leaving.
I reach the school five minutes before the first bell.
-POV 1-
I close my locker and make my way to class just as the first bell rings. I'm going through the list of things I need in my head.
Shit. My hall ticket, did I bring it?
I start digging through my bag, not paying attention to where I'm going. I bump into someone.
I turn around to apologise but whoever it was is already long gone, lost in the crowd of students.
"People really are in a hurry today." I turn back to where I was initially headed to be faced with a boy.
"It's understandable," I respond. "We have an exam today."
He shrugs before handing me a piece of paper.
My hall ticket. I must've dropped it.
I offer him a grateful smile. It could've been trampled by the time I noticed. He returns my smile.
"Good luck, April." He gives me a thumbs up.
"Good luck, August." I'm still smiling as I walk into my exam hall.
