This weekend was tough... but through it all, the overarching theme was love. Love was unavoidable as it went hand in hand with dadi (paternal grandma). The impact of her love is evident with every heartfelt comment from friends and family who are mourning with us. My nature is to mourn alone, to close the door and sit alone while I go through memory after memory and pray to god to forgive my loved ones that have passed. While my younger sister has the ability to say something that may provide some comfort, I’ve shut down and have failed to comfort the people I love, even today. However this time was different. I truly believe in the power of love and its impact. From the moment I heard the news on Friday night/Saturday morning, her love has been coming back to me via the many people who have reached out and continue to reach out in support. Her love created and nurtured the two most important men in my life, my dad and my youngest uncle. Without them, without her, I would be nothing. In my life, I have been very blessed. While 3 of them are now gone, I am so very lucky to be able to create memories with all 4 of my grandparents. I have been beyond blessed that I can remember each of them holding me and the warmth of their love. However, dadi’s love was special in a way that is unquantifiable. She was literally my day 1. She traveled to NYC all the way from Bangladesh and was present in my life from the very start of my existence. Even though she would go back, it would never be very long before she was back in America to spend time with her children and grandchildren. Dadi always treated me like a prince. I love mangos. I attribute that love to two things that happened while I was in Bangladesh after my dadabhai (paternal grandfather) had passed the summer after third grade. One of them, while fuzzy, I attribute to dadi. I really enjoyed my time at her house in Sylhet. The house had mango trees growing around it, and I believe it was the first time I had ever seen a mango tree. Upon seeing my excitement I believe she asked one of the people who worked at her house to literally climb the tree and cut down a mango for me, just for me. Dad has historically tried and missed the target gifting me things. On one of his trips back from England he got me a Man U wristband... (I’m an Arsenal fan) We don’t have a relationship where we speak to each other very much, quiet love. Last year he found out about my struggles with depression and gave this to my for my birthday.
