2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

knight4knight, big repressed guys learning to be soft around each other, the brenmurph of it all, the gloves and the heart symbolizing their fears of themselves, Max leaping through the sky to save Torse, Torse gently placing a hand on Max's back, "i always considered you a friend, maxwell", Torse asking Max to help save Zern and Max agreeing without hesitation

and thats just canon that doesnt even include The Horrors Ive Concocted

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

They are both trans in both directions and they are aromantic but also deeply in love and also in a qpr and they've never had sex but also they fuck nasty and they're really private about it but also everyone knows are you following me, camera guy?

Well, okay, he may have had one storybook he liked to skim through from time to time, because the illustrations of the gentle knight’s deceptively imposing armor— sharp, dark, and wicked— were excellent and Wealwell had always liked playing pretend as the high tower that withstood centuries of attacks from the elements and invading forces. But the book was usually stowed so deep in the chest at the foot of Maxwell’s bed that he forgot it existed for months or years at a time.

It has certainly been years since Maxwell last thought of that impossible knight when Torse, in spite of the horrid air, offers to speak to him about legacy, and its burden. Though he does not even remember the story in that moment.

The memory only returns hours later, when he is staring out the porthole by his bunk, having given into his exhaustion in the early evening and therefore woken from his typical eight hours in the middle of the night.

In his near-sleep haze, Maxwell is entirely sure the impossible knight has climbed out of his storybook to hold vigil, backlit by an unbelievable cosmos brighter than he’d ever see in Utmany. Then, he is entirely sure that he has actually fallen into the storybook, because there is no way he’d ever find a sight like this anywhere in Gath. The gentle knight’s helm turns away from the stars to scan the deck, and the roiling fire within burns away Maxwell’s nonsensical waking dreams. He’s not in a fairytale, looking at a storybook character. It’s just Torse keeping watch.

But, some childish part of Maxwell’s mind insists, emboldened by the late hour and peering through the porthole like a kaleidoscope, but the story never said the knight’s name. It could be him.

Not everything gets a name, even in stories. Especially in stories. The choice to only refer to the knight as a knight was a simple rhetorical strategy to direct the audience’s attention to his purpose in the plot. Names are for individuals; the knight was an ideal.

For some strange reason, staring at starlight-shined iron, Maxwell’s own pragmatism stings.
