Thank you all for your kind words/thoughts about my Oliver’s passing.  It’s been a difficult week to say the least, but a little bit of good came of it.  I adopted a kitten and was able to give him a forever home, and he’s taken a lot of the hurt away.  His name is Barry and he’s a great little dude.

At first, he’s a little hesitant.  He knows how strong he is and is really scared that he’ll hurt them.

But there’s something about children that Quasi is drawn to without question.  Maybe due to the fact that his mental growth has been stunted a bit and relates to their sense of innocence and wonder, but he just genuinely enjoys watching them play and listening to their thoughts.

Most of all, children are not born to hate.  If a child asks him about his appearance, he simply tells them that he was born that way, and most times they’ll squeak an affirmative out and that will be the end of it.

BRAVERY  IN  ADVERSITY.  Esmeralda  always  thought  that  no  one  embodied  it  better  than  Quasimodo.  Courage  was  not  only  about  grand  gestures  and  acts  of  defiance.  It  came  out  in  the  everyday  challenges,  and  she  knew  how  many  Quasimodo  had  to  face.  Not  just  during  the  twenty  years  of  isolation  in  the  belltower  and  manipulation  by  Frollo,  but  also  the  casual  cruelties  that  people  inflicted  on  him  simply  because  of  he  was  different.  But  Quasimodo  emerged  just  as  strong  and  gentle  each  time,  and  Esmeralda  admired  him  for  that.

Thankfully,  kindness  did  exist.  The  world  was  not  as  cold  as  Quasimodo  had  been  taught.  She  happened  to  know  the  blacksmith  in  passing  and  smiled  brightly  at  Quasimodo’s  story.

       “Those  bullies  aren’t  worth  your  time.        Anyway,  I’m  glad  the  blacksmith  got        you!  Your  work  is  beautiful.  I  did  say        before  that  if  I  had  your  skill,  I’d  not        be  dancing  in  the  streets  for  coins.”

Regardless of how much time passed and how much of it was spent among supportive company and friends, Quasimodo still found himself fighting the temptation to shake his head when complimented by those around him.  He caught himself in the action before it became too apparent--thought with Esmeralda’s knowledge of him and his mannerisms, it most likely hadn’t been lost on her--and continued to smile down at the table.

“And if I had your skill, I’d be out and about more.”  He reassured her when anything else died on his tongue.
