Dante sat in his infirmary, reading through some mail sent to him. He pulled out a letter from the mail and smiled at the sender's name, letting out a small sigh at the sight of the letter's wax seal. Carefully, he pulled away the seal to avoid breaking it, then pause, looking up as he heard the doors to his infirmary open. "Oh- Nathan, good afternoon. Come on, I'm not busy."
“Well… the most that I’ve told her is that I’m dating someone,” Dante admitted. “Specifically, ‘a very special man’. But not much, since, well, mercenaries. She doesn’t know I’m a mercenary, she just knows that I’m doing very important doctor work here.”
He sat back, clearing his throat. “I’ve arranged so that my furlough falls when her school ends in the summer, and we do have a residence here. Perhaps you’d like to visit then? It’s harder to see her during the week because of her school and our matches.”
That was the worst part - not being able to be with her. He hoped that she made plenty of friends.
"When school's over? That's what? June, July? I can do that," Nathan said. "I was plannin' on headin' on back to t' Canada to visit dad, but I can work mine to be with yours and still do that."
Nathan didn't know how either he or the kid would react to one another. At least she knew that Dante and he were dating, so he didn't have to help his lover break the news to her. It was still going to be a lot for both of them, though.
"I hope you know that I might just spoil her," Nathan said with a cheeky grin. "I love spoilin' you, so spoilin' yer child's gonna be even better."
"Mhm. I don't expect you to stay the whole time, but I think I'd be so terribly sad if didn't get to see you all furlough," Dante chuckled, shaking his head.
"She's my adopted daughter. Her mother was one of my patients, who was unfortunately terminal. She had no living relatives, but I was given the opportunity to adopt her, which I did."
As he spoke, he tucked one hand into his pocket and took out his wallet, taking out a picture. It was a little yellowed at the edges, but it was a picture of Dante and his daughter at what looked like some kind of science fair. "She's so smart. She's ten, here- do you see this contraption she built? It's a circuit that detects fresh produce." The actual construction behind it was simple, but everything his daughter did impressed him.
Nathan looked at the black and white photo, smiling at how happy his lover looked in it. The kid was there, looking happy as well. She must have been pretty smart to build something like that.
"She's got a good dad lookin' after her," he murmured, placing another kiss on Dante's cheek. "Maybe if school ends up bein' rough on her, I'll teach her some self-defence? Nothin' like a few fightin' skills to keep her happy."
"She is a fencer, but I'm certain that self-defense wouldn't hurt." Dante hummed softly to himself, dipping a hand into his pocket and withdrawing Neptune from it, petting the rodent quietly.
"...I miss her. I miss her so much. I know that she'll just adore you, love. She's very smart, she loves science. And she loves the rats."

"Dante, my beloved friend. I seem to have developed pneumonia in my zhird lung... Do you have any antibiotics? Demo drank most of mine." Medic looked wan and sickly, coughing loudly into a handkerchief. "Dying of pneumonia, not one of my favorite ways to go..."
“In your… third… lung…?” Dante shook his head, deciding not to question it. “I have plenty in my infirmary. Do you want to come inside? I’ll lock the door so that nobody walks in on us.”

Smiling, Nathan walked around Dante's desk and chair, wrapping his arms around the other and giving him a few small kisses.
"Hi, darlin'," he murmured between kisses. "I missed you. What d'ya got here?"
He looked at the mail and other papers scattered on the desk, lazily skimming over each one. He spotted the wax seal, going to pick it up. He's never seen one, so he was curious, wanting to get a better look at the imprint.
"Careful with that, love, wax seals are very fragile." Dante was only half paying attention as he read the letter. It was very neatly hand-written in cursive. The wax seal was simple, with a "J" in the middle and a few small flowers. He frowned a little, wondering how he was going to explain this to Nathan. Oh, well, might as well rip off that bandaid quickly.
"Ah, see... this is a letter from my daughter," he hummed.
Nathan didn't bother with the hand-written letter, not wanting to read something he shouldn't. Also because he couldn't read cursive, but still. Gently, he looked at the seal, careful to not do anything to it.
He damn near dropped it as he heard where the letter came from, though.
Backing away slightly, Nathan looked over at Dante, confusion clear on his face. His eyes searched his lover's face for anything, but eventually, he shook his head a bit and spoke.
"I'm sorry, your what?"
“Yes, um…” Dante bit his lip, scratching his chin, before clearing his throat. “I, erm. I have a daughter. She’s twelve, her name is Jocelyn. She goes to a boarding school here in New Mexico. I, um, I try to keep her name out of conversation. Just in case.”
Just in case someone wanted to use her as leverage against him. Just in case the enemy team found out and taunted him with it as he died. Just in case he was blackmailed-
He lightly shook his head. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, love. I just- I want to keep her safe.”
"Dante, hey," Nathan said, moving so he could better see and hold the other, "Hey, look at me. I'm not mad, alright? I'm just... surprised, is all."
Try as he might, Nathan was having a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that his boyfriend had a child that was pretty much half his age. He could see where the fear of the others knowing about her would come from, but he would at least would have liked to know.
"I just... don't you think this is something you shoulda brought up a little sooner?" He asked. "I mean, yeah, it's your kid an' all, an' the others here aren't the best at keepin' their mouths shut, but still. I ain't mad, but, y'know. Better late than never, right?"
Dante nervously chewed at his lip even with Nathan's reassurance. "I don't- I don't expect you to take on any of the responsibility," he said, taking off his glasses to wipe them on his shirt.
"Especially because, well, she's quite a bit older, a-and I doubt you want to deal with any of that." Now he was rambling a bit, like he tended to do when he was nervous.

Flowers That Bloom In The Spring
Spring had sprung. The snow at Coldfront was thawing (partway), the danger of blizzards had passed, and one could go outside without wearing multiple layers. The nearby lake was no longer a solid sheet of ice, and the bitter wind had warmed and softened to a light fresh breeze. Frankly, it was Alexei's favorite time of year. He could open the panels of his greenhouse slightly to give his flowers fresh air, and more hardy varieties could even be planted outside. Tightening the knot on his bandanna, Alexei kneels down, turning up soil with his garden spade to plant some young snapdragons and vivid yellow calendula.
Ember liked to wander. While they were well-dressed for the freezing Coldfront weather, it still wasn't in their best interest to be out there for too long. Now that it was a bit warmer, though, they could leave the comfort of their room at the end of the hallway and wander around outside.
Making their out of the base, it didn't take them long to come across the Heavy, and they paused, staring at him through their mask, debating if they should approach another teammate or not. Most of the other REDs seemed to be scared of them.
They made their choice and made their way towards Alexei, snow crunching under their boots as they came to a stop next to the Heavy, quietly watching him.
"Oh, shoot..." Alexei sighed, looking at the bright yellow flower that had broken off from the main plant. He always felt awful when something like this happened, like he'd let down some fragile thing that had been counting on him to protect it. He's about to set the blossom aside- he can put it in water when he's done, and he's almost finished with this particular bed- when he feels himself being watched. Looking up, he spies an unfamiliar Pyro who had crept up on him while he was occupied. Smiling, he reaches out, offering them the wayward Calendula blossom. "Hallo, leetle Pyro."
Ember froze up a bit as they were spotted, expecting to be shooed off upon first glance. They tilted their head as the Heavy instead smiled and offered them a flower.
Hesitantly, the Pyro shuffled forwards, taking the flower from the Heavy, cupping it in between both of their hands. They looked down at it, gently running a thumb across the petals. It was pretty.
They let out a muffled "hello" and a small nod to accompany it. The young Pyro crouched down to watch Alexei, the lights on the front of their helmet flickering slightly.
Alexei raised an eyebrow curiously. He'd seen his fair share of Pyros, of course- a terror on the battlefield but a godsend when blizzards hit and the power went out- but he'd never seen one with a mask like that. It was interesting. Still, he went back to his work, not wanting to seem like he was staring or being rude. After a bit, he turns back to them, offering a spare spade and a smile. "Vanting to help me, leetle Pyro? Es not very hard. Just have to being very gentle."
Ember perked up as the spade was offered, and while they were content to sit and watch, the offer was very tempting. There were many things that the Pyro saw in different ways, but flowers weren't one of them.
They nodded, carefully setting the flower aside, before reaching out to take the spade. Turning the tool around in their hand, they moved a bit closer to the flower bed, looking up at Alexei for instructions.
This was nice. Their previous Heavy didn't like them very much.
"Do like dis." Carefully, he digs a small hole in the flower bed a couple inches from the last flower he planted. He gently picks up an unplanted snapdragon and sets it in the soil, covering the roots and sprinkling a little water onto it with his watering can. "See? Easy, just need to be careful not to hurt flowers by accident. Now you try!"
They watched very closely, fidgeting with the tool so that they kept their hands busy. With another nod, they dug a small hole a few inches away, just like Alexei did, before taking a snapdragon in their gloved hands, placing it into the hole, covering the roots. They reached out for the watering can and carefully watered the plant.
Once they finished, they sat back on their heels and looked up at the Heavy, tilting their head as if asking if they did a good job.

"Aye, swear this damn mansion is cursed," Alastair mumbled to himself as he made his way through Mann Manor, his latest reassignment. He carried his sword over his shoulder, suitcase in his other hand as he tried to drag it up the stairs to his new living situation. He wasn't having a good time.
“Haunted is the right word to describe this place.” How Nathan heard the Demoman’s mumbling would be considered alarming despite the fact he shrugged his shoulders in his view. “Only specific days and time but nonetheless, it’s a normal base once you get use to it.”
Alastair was a bit embarrassed at how he jumped when Nathan spoke. He was far too on-edge for this. “Oi, don’t scare me like that!” he laughed, looking behind him as the stairs creaked.
The sight of his new teammate getting shook by speaking refrained himself from chuckling. Instead, he chose to grin back at him. “Sorry about that. This place is not always quiet since we have a feisty Soldier running the halls and then we have this ‘ghost’ causing mayhem for the BLUs. Don’t worry, he’s harmless but not his pranks.”
“Ach, guess I’ll fit right in, then,” Alastair said with a laugh. Too much quiet was never a good thing in his experience. He set down his suitcase to hold his hand out to the other. “Name’s Alastair! You prolly know I’m a new transfer already, Demoman is my class.”

"Aye, swear this damn mansion is cursed," Alastair mumbled to himself as he made his way through Mann Manor, his latest reassignment. He carried his sword over his shoulder, suitcase in his other hand as he tried to drag it up the stairs to his new living situation. He wasn't having a good time.
“Haunted is the right word to describe this place.” How Nathan heard the Demoman’s mumbling would be considered alarming despite the fact he shrugged his shoulders in his view. “Only specific days and time but nonetheless, it’s a normal base once you get use to it.”
Alastair was a bit embarrassed at how he jumped when Nathan spoke. He was far too on-edge for this. “Oi, don’t scare me like that!” he laughed, looking behind him as the stairs creaked.
