clean
when you listen to clean you listen to rain, you listen to your old self being wash away into the ground leaving you freshly new. Clean is for the people who experience life shattering events, people who's enter life was determined by one thing that has stuck with them forever and has never changed because either they fear change or they can't let go of their old self because they refuse to believe that they could possibly be someone without that defining event. Clean is the song during the moment you finally realize that all the bad things that have happened in your life, it doesn't make you who you are. You're clean, you'll carry it, but not as much anymore, you allow yourself to live alongside it rather than be it
closing songs
Taylor's closing songs are truly some of her best. Most of her ending song have this quality to them, I don't know how describe. It makes me feels like after everything, after listening to the heartbreak of red or the anger and vitriol of reputation, we made it and its time to move on. The ending songs reflect on the emotions and the emotions presented in their respective albums. In Begin Again, she talks about believing in love again and how through her entire experience with love (specially the one she talks about in red) and how she will move forward. To be honest, its almost like a goodbye to each album, going into the future. My personal favorite closing song is Daylight. Daylight is one of the most emotional songs in her entire discography. Its so beautifully reflective and I think the main message of the song is really "after all I've been through, all the wrong choices I made, I still found love and can't look back." Theres something so beautiful and simple in reflection and admitting one's mistakes and then finally finding happiness.
taylor's use of commas
I feel like no one talks about Taylor's usage of commas in her songs.
We often talk about her amazing lyrics but her usage of commas has such an important role. It leaves ambiguity and thats one Taylor's , in my personal opinion, underrated skills. The main on I think most people have heard about is in champagne problems where in the second course it says:
"your hometown skeptics called it, champagne problems."
Taylor is also using wording in this to to show us a double meaning. The line could mean that the man's hometown's skeptics knew all along, they knew what was going to happen and that the man would turn to alcohol. OR it could mean that the man fell into such a deep, awful depression that these people, who are portrayed in a negative light, have never seen this level of destitution and desperation in a person and needed something to call it, this type of behavior is so awful it has never been named.
there's a reddit thread related to this so I'll link it here if you're into this kind of stuff
