I love seeing how classic stories get adapted across time and place—kind of like how Cinderella has wildly different versions depending on where and when it’s told. What changes? What stays the same? And what does that say about the culture that’s adapting it?

So now I’m on a bit of a mission: I want to find more Holmes-inspired stories from outside the English-speaking world. Not just translations of Doyle, but actual adaptations—local takes on the detective and his world.

First published in The Strand Magazine in October 1891, The Boscombe Valley Mystery is a classic example of Holmes untangling a seemingly open-and-shut case to reveal something far more complicated. It has all the hallmarks of a great detective story—suspicious circumstances, hidden motives, and a dramatic last-minute revelation—but what really makes it stand out (at least for me) is the mix of personal tragedy and sharp-witted character dynamics.

One of the things I love most about this story is the almost star-crossed romance between James McCarthy and Alice Turner. On the surface, it seems like a straightforward murder case—James is found near his father’s body, acting suspiciously, with all evidence pointing to his guilt. But underneath the crime itself is something more layered: a doomed love story caught in the wake of their fathers' past. The tension between James and Alice, driven by circumstances beyond their control, gives the mystery an emotional weight that makes the resolution hit even harder.

And then, of course, there’s Inspector Lestrade. This is only his second appearance in the Holmes stories (after A Study in Scarlet), and The Boscombe Valley Mystery gives us a much better look at just how testy his working relationship with Holmes really is. The two of them are constantly at odds, with Lestrade being skeptical of Holmes’s methods and Holmes making absolutely no effort to hide his irritation.

Lestrade is described as “indifferent and contemptuous” and Holmes' attitude, in turn, can be described with perhaps my favorite line in the entire Holmes anthology:

'You are right,' said Holmes demurely; 'you do find it very hard to tackle the facts.'

It’s the kind of mutual exasperation that’s somehow both antagonistic and deeply, timelessly funny. And yet, despite all this, they keep working together—because as much as they annoy each other, they both know they get results.

Beyond the interpersonal drama, the case itself is an interesting one, with Holmes working through muddy witness testimony and circumstantial evidence to get to the truth. It’s a great example of his ability to cut through assumptions and piece together a hidden history from the smallest details.

One of the most interesting things Moffat said in the interview was about how Sherlock Holmes was always meant to be modern:

"When Doyle was having his biggest success… it was a story of a modern young man living in modern London. That’s how fresh it felt."

Honestly, I love this take, because it makes you rethink every adaptation—Holmes and Watson weren’t originally some sepia-toned period piece; they were contemporary characters, solving modern crimes. Which is exactly what Sherlock did (whether you loved it, hated it, or just lived through it like the rest of us).

First published in The Strand Magazine in February 1892, The Adventure of the Speckled Band is one of those Sherlock Holmes stories that everyone seems to know—and for good reason. Even Doyle himself called it his best, and honestly, I can see why. It’s tense, chilling, and brilliantly constructed, with that perfect mix of intrigue and dread that makes a mystery unforgettable.

This story feels like Holmes at his most cinematic. From the moment Helen Stoner arrives at Baker Street, you’re gripped. Her account of her sister Julia’s death, punctuated by the eerie whistle in the night, sets the stage for one of Holmes’s most unsettling cases. Stoke Moran, the Stoner family estate, only deepens the unease—it’s a crumbling, isolated house filled with strange, almost surreal details that feel straight out of a Gothic novel.

The stakes in this story feel incredibly high, thanks to the locked-room nature of the mystery. Helen’s obvious terror makes you lean in closer, trying to figure out how all the pieces fit together: the bolted bed, the “ventilator,” the strange bell-pull, and the safe with its saucer of milk. Every clue adds a layer of physicality that makes the mystery feel almost like a puzzle you could solve yourself. As someone who’s an escape room fanatic, this one scratches a very specific itch. Every detail matters, and watching Holmes untangle it all is endlessly satisfying.

And of course, Dr. Grimesby Roylott looms large over everything—I think he might be one of Doyle’s most chilling villains, not because he’s especially complex, but because his menace is so straightforward. He’s a harsh, volatile presence throughout the story, and the more you learn about his actions, the worse it gets. When the truth finally comes out (that reveal!), it’s both horrifying and deeply satisfying.

First published in The Strand Magazine in December 1891 (UK) and February 1892 (US), The Man with the Twisted Lip is a prime example of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s knack for blending the seemingly ordinary with the utterly bizarre.

When I first read Twisted Lip, what struck me most wasn’t the mystery itself (though it’s a great one)—it was Holmes. Specifically, that moment when Watson rushes into the opium den, panicked, and finds Holmes already there in disguise. Of course, he’s there. Why wouldn’t he be? It’s such a quintessentially Holmes moment—always five steps ahead, always in the thick of things, and always just a bit theatrical about it.

The story itself is built on layers of misdirection. Neville St. Clair, the missing man at the center of the mystery, seems to have vanished without a trace, leaving only a sinister beggar with a twisted lip in his place. But what makes this story memorable isn’t just the mystery itself—it’s the strange humanity woven through it. Neville’s double life is both shocking and oddly understandable, a reminder that the people Holmes investigates are never as simple as they seem.

The setting adds so much to the atmosphere here. The gloomy opium den and the beggar’s grimy corner of London feel alive and unsettling, with Sidney Paget’s illustrations capturing that uneasy mix of shadows and sharp detail. This isn’t the polished London of tea rooms and drawing rooms; it’s the underbelly, where lives and stories slip through the cracks.

And yet, at its heart, this story feels almost playful. Holmes, in his element, is as sharp as ever, unraveling the truth with that mix of precision and flair that never gets old. Watson, steady as always, is our lens into this strange world—and as bewildered as we are at times. Their dynamic shines here, grounding even the most outlandish details in a sense of trust and mutual understanding.

First published in The Strand Magazine in March 1892 (UK) and April 1892 (US), The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb came complete with eight evocative illustrations by Sidney Paget—the artist who shaped how we all imagine Sherlock Holmes today. The story has stood the test of time for good reason.

One of his more well-known adventures (don’t worry, we’ll dive into the obscure now and then), The Engineer's Thumb has been my favorite Sherlock story since I first read it in 8th grade English. Why were we reading about a man losing a finger in school? Great question! Add it to the long list of deranged and delightfully morbid stories cemented in public school curriculums.

But what really makes this story unforgettable is Victor Hatherley, the titular engineer (or, more accurately, the owner of the titular thumb). Besides being one of only two cases Watson brought to Holmes, Victor’s grit and determination left a lasting impression on me. The fact that he managed to survive the hydraulic press (with sheer cleverness, adrenaline, or both) and stumble his way to help was incredible. He’s my longtime favorite Holmes character—quick-thinking, hardy, and courageous in the face of outright madness.

And then there’s the setting: that sinister, isolated house with its secret press room. It’s pure nightmare fuel, in the best way. As a young reader already drawn to horror and thrillers, the idea of a rich villain with a dangerous, almost cartoonishly elaborate setup was both terrifying and completely irresistible. Who doesn’t love an antagonist whose house is a death trap?

On top of all that, the atmosphere of this story sticks with you: the sense of isolation, the hum of unfamiliar machinery, and that creeping dread as you realize something is very, very wrong. Holmes, ever cool and calculating, unravels it all with precision, but the real heart of this case is Victor’s desperate struggle to survive.

“The Accomplice” is a gritty, tension-filled tale of lust, betrayal, and bad decisions. This isn’t just any throwback—it’s one of MacDonald’s early works, written back when he was cranking out stories faster than he could keep track of them. Sometimes he’d move on to the next idea before finishing or publishing everything, and this one got left behind, buried in the archives at the University of Florida for decades.

Now, “The Accomplice” is seeing the light of day in The Strand Magazine. We’ve published our fair share of rare finds over the years—think Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, and more—so we’re excited to add this early MacDonald to the mix :)
