The Catoblepas

According to Plinius Major, this creature lives near the source of the Nile in Ethiopia. Its head is so heavy that it always hangs near or on the ground. He only eats poisonous plants, which give him the ability to spew a cloud of deadly toxic gas, which makes people and animals deaf and mute and eventually kills them. As the story goes, a group of Roman soldiers found the beast and tried to kill and eat it. But the Catoblepas has the ability to kill people by merely looking at them, and so the soldiers all dropped dead.

When the commander found out about this, he sent more soldiers, none of whom survived. The locals told him about the creatures deadly gaze, and he commanded his soldiers to avoid being looked at by the monster. Thus, he sent a third group of soldiers, who eventually managed to kill the beast. It is not known how the Catoblepas tasted, but his hide was sent to the emperor of Rome who displayed it in a temple.

Plinius definitely seemed to believe the story of the beast that could kill with his eyes. He warned that if it didn’t live only in such a small, remote location, it would be a threat to the entire human species.

Edward Topsell, in his 17th century zoological works, also described the creature although he called them ‘gorgons’. He was unsure whether the animal excreted venom from his mouth or his eyes. He also referenced Plinius and made the connection with the mythical Gorgons, believing them to be the same creatures, although he pointed out that the story of the Gorgons being the offspring of Medusa and Phoroynis was nothing more than fiction, made up by poets.

The animal is supposedly bred in Libya and Hesperia.
