âI beg your pardon?â Celeste expressed, the words falling out of her almost in a laugh. The sheer audacity one would have to tell her to back off was practically comical. âI can do no such thing.â She made her way around into the trauma room, shifting around the patient bed. âMy top priority is to ensure this woman survives. There is clear trauma to her torso. She belongs in the OR, not possibly bleeding internally while you waste time.â There would be the opportunity to check on the child, but Celesteâs priority had to be the woman who had been in the accident. Her life could be hanging in the balance. âThis is not up for debate, Doctor.âÂ
âensuring that this baby is okay is not a waste of time, how dare you even suggest that i am here to waste time.â nancy shook her head in disbelief at the situation, she was not one to shy away from confrontation though. âthis is completely up for debate. do you have kids? how would you feel if you knew someone had so callously and casually disregarded their life?â she had definitely taken it a step too far bringing the other doctorâs personal life into the situation.
âHaâ donât worry about it. Iâve been exactly where you are right now. The bedtime negotiations made for a lot of headaches when Liam and Austin were at that age, I canât even imagine what itâll be like when the nâwhen that daughter of yours is a teenager,â Cormac said, an attempt to recover after almost spilling the beans about Kathleen being pregnant when it registered that he was talking to Nancy â Kathleenâs sister.Â
nancy smiled at the mention of cormacâs kids, it was nice to know that she wasnât the only person to deal with how her daughter was being. âwe love them right? but they are pains in the asses.â she laughed, she barely noticed his stumble on words but she raised a brow slightly anyway. âhow are you and kathleen? everything okay with you?â
âFour?! My god I can barely manage one let alone four.â Zoe was clearly stunned at the idea and she didnât bother hiding it. âBaton Rouge, Louisiana. Itâs where I grew up.â
âitâs definitely been a wild ride.â nancy laughed and nodded as zoe spoke again. âoh, quaint, i like that. i can imagine that coming here was quite an adjustment.â she understood how difficult it was to move.
âI tried that,â Levi said softly. He always tried that when patients said they wanted a more experienced doctor.  âIt was a no go. Of course, I am happy to come with. Assist. Learn. Whatever you need Dr. Shepherd,â he assured her. He didnât want it to seem like he was trying to get out of doing his job. Â
âoh i have no doubt that you tried, donât worry.â nancy tried to reassure the young doctor, she liked him, he was one of the good ones thatâs for sure, she definitely had high hopes for him. âiâm guessing her vitals are all good?â

âHi Dr. Shepherd,â Lexie greeted, glancing up from her charts when she heard someone speaking to her. She waved at the little girl who was standing at Dr. Shepherdâs side.  âYour Uncle Derek is just finishing up with a patient. He should be done really soon,â she promised.  âHow are you?â she asked Nancy. Â
nancy appreciated it when people actually spoke to her daughter and not just to her, she was old enough to be able to engage in conversation so she smiled when lexie did exactly that. âiâm good, ready to go home but what this one wants, this one gets.â that went for all her kids in all fairness but freya was the youngest and the only girl, something she had waited for for so long, how could she say no. âhow are you? my brother keeping you busy?â
that sounded like nothing short of a nightmare as far as carina was concerned, but she smiled and nodded along anyway. âno, no. itâs not important. actually, it is kind of important. i just wanted to ask if you would be willing to read over my research and⌠support me?â she asked hopefully. this time she excluded the details for fear of losing her. âcan i get you another coffee?â
nancy was actually a little surprised as carina spoke, she would always support her colleagues. âyou shouldnât even have to ask, carina. of course i will. you know another coffee would be amazing and you can tell me all about your research.â she smiled to show that she was genuinely interested in listening to the younger woman.
âGood afternoon Dr. Shepherd. How is your day going?â Lucas asked he came into the small conference room. They were meeting to discuss a patient they had shared for months. They had discovered a cancerous tumor on her ovary early in her pregnancy, and Lucas had been working with Nancy on the case ever since arriving to Seattle. He took a seat at the table and opened the case files he had. Â
âmy day could certainly be worse, dr. williams.â meeting like this had become a regular occurrence throughout their patientâs pregnancy, they liked to have a plan in place to look after both the baby and the mother. she couldnât even begin to imagine what the woman was going through, the fear through what should be such a happy time in her life. the world just seemed to work in mysterious ways. âso, we donât have long to go before the baby arrives, we need to have a good team around us when that happens and we need to have two plans, one we want to follow and one we can use as a back up if something goes wrong with plan a.â nancy sipped her coffee and leant back in her chair as she read the notes.
âOf course I can,â Kathleen argued as though it were the most natural thing in the world, and to her of course it was, sheâd seemingly been arguing with her siblings since the day she could talk, âTake your children for instance, you love all five of them equally, right?â And the implication being that if that wasnât the correct answer, Nancy was somehow a bad mother and Kathleen had won the contest that the other didnât even know they were having. âWell then, I can dislike you all to the same level. Of course who comes out on top varies depending on just how annoying any one of you is deciding to be at the given time and what gets you there is different, but rest assured itâs truly always a battle for that top space.â Whether it was Nancy doing as she was now, Lizzie being overly optimistic, or Amelia simply being Amelia. They all had the ability to annoy their middle sister to extremes if given the chance. âEver heard of patient doctor confidentiality?â She asked factiously, eyebrow raised in an unimpressed manner. Crap, of course she hadnât bought it. âNo Iâm not sick!â She hissed, rolling her eyes at the concern her sister was showing. Honestly. âTrust me, I donât need your help Nance. Iâm absolutely fine.â
nancy rolled her eyes as the other spoke, sometimes just sometimes she could at least try and be a little more human, but no. âif you said you didnât have a favourite child, you would be lying a hundred percent. you can love them all exactly the same but one of them is your favourite even if you say otherwise.â she shook her head, it just wasnât worth getting into an argument with kathleen, you would never win and you would never come out of it unscathed. as kathleen defended herself, something clicked in nancyâs brain, call it intuition or simply just knowing her sister better than the other thought possible. she pulled kathleen aside, not caring if she fought back, once in a more quiet space she still lowered her voice as she spoke but looked up at her sister with an almost frown from realising what was going on. âhow far along are you?â
Lucy let out an amused breath. âShe dared to defy you? I wasnât sure there was anyone within a hundred-mile-radius that would dare try that.â There wasnât a particular balance between OB and fetal surgery that Lucy tried to keep. A lot of her cases overlapped, as did many in the fetal department, so she interacted with both cohorts of doctors from time to time. âAlready into the coffee I see.â She shifted some folders from one hand to another. âI suppose it isnât a great time to give you some exciting paperwork to brighten your morning.âÂ
nancy chuckled, she supposed that lucy was right, people were at times afraid of her but now if she even so much as raised her voice at home, her youngest child would simply just laugh. it was both frustrating and hilarious all at once. âof course, itâs the only thing that gets me through the day, iâm going to start needing naps halfway through my day soon.â she reluctantly held out her hand for the paperwork lucy had for her. at least sheâd be able to take her mind off of being so tired.

In Quality Time, nothing says "I love you" like full, undivided attention. Being there for this type of person is critical, but really being thereâwith the TV off, fork and knife down, and all chores and tasks on standbyâmakes you feel truly special and loved. Distractions, postponed activities, or the failure to listen can be especially hurtful. Whether itĘźs spending uninterrupted time talking with someone else or doing activities together, you deepen your connection with others through sharing time.Â
nancy is big fan of spending time with the one she loves, she will take a night of quality time over anything. having someoneâs pure undivided attention means more to her than she could possibly even say.
âI do yes, a little boy though so I canât completely understand what itâs like to have a daughter.â Zoe smiled giving a nod as well. âIâm sure I will enjoy it, my last hospital had a very small OBGYN department so I never really got a lot of experience.â
âwell i can definitely understand what itâs like to have a boy, i have four.â nancy smiled, sometimes saying that she had four boys out loud just blew her own mind, she couldnât imagine what other people would think. âwhere were you before now?â
Kathleen had thought that she had been smart, that scheduling her appointment as late as she possibly could would mean that Nancy would be at home or at least have nipped to the cafeteria for some dinner. Although perhaps her sister had in fact already eaten, those tests had taken longer than she ever could have imagined. As she ran into her older sister she couldnât help but be glad that sheâd convinced Cormac that she could get some blood drawn alone, if Nancy had caught them both on the OB floor there was no way she could get out of it, but she had regretted it getting the test. She always forgot how much she hated blood until it was right in front of her face. Despite not exactly being thrilled to see her sister, she couldnât help but smirk at Nancyâs defensive stance. Good. âOh please, none of you are my favourite,â She said, much like a mother that told her child that she loved all her children the same, but no mother would ever add on, âI tolerate you all the same.â Of course that wasnât true. At least her older ranked above Amelia. Her smirk became tighter, the hand that was wrapped around the strap of her purse curling tighter as she pulled it closer to her. âJust a mistake,â She lied smoothly, trying to seemed annoyed when the real reason that she was on the floor had her wanting to jump for joy, âThey paged but I guess one of the psyche residents already took the consult.â
nancy pressed her lips together and raised an eyebrow, she was in the mood to wind kathleen up a little since she was just there, âyou must love one of us more than the others, you canât say that you donât.â she ran a hand through her hair and tilted her head. nancy could tell someone was just...off. she couldnât tell what it was, she was too tired to analyse the younger of the two. âoh really? i havenât heard of any patients that would need a psych consult...iâve been here all day, i think i wouldâve heard something.â she would straight up accuse the other of lying but that wouldnât get her anywhere as she had learnt so many times throughout their lives. âwhatâre you really doing up here? you couldâve paged me if you needed something.â nancy tried to read the expression on kathleenâs face, but as always, she was completely unreadable and that was one of the things nancy hated about the other the most, she just looked pissed off ninety percent of the time. âyouâre okay right? youâre not here because youâre sick or something? because not telling me something like that that would be cruel.â she was almost sure that she would know if her sister was sick but she wanted to be certain.
Kathleen knew that she should have just went to another hospital. Seattle Pres was a perfectly good hospitalâŚbut Seattle Grace Mercy West was the best. Or at least it better be, she did not work at mediocre hospitals. However, she had been aware that should she chose to have her baby at the hospital her entire family worked at, sooner or later - probably sooner - one of them would find out. She should have guessed it would be Nancy. Of course it wasnât as though sheâd been definitely caught, she believed sheâd managed to shove the folder into her purse before her older sister had noticed the middle Shepherd. There had to be a way out of this. Sheâd never believe that she had stopped by to actually see her, she didnât have a follow up if she lied about a consult, and she thought case of mistaken identity might be a little unbelievable. Think fast. âNance,â She greeted shortly as the older Shepherd approached. What was the likelihood that her sister would just let her be on her way after a polite chat about the weather?
nancy was working late, she had had to call benjamin and ask him to watch his siblings for a little while longer before going out like he had planned, she wasnât sure that she trusted that he would actually do this but she had hope that he was old enough to understand he couldnât leave an eight year old and a five year old alone in their home. she finished up a couple of charts before heading out, as she rounded the corner, she almost made it to the elevators before spotting a very familiar face. she almost audibly groaned at the sight of her younger sister, not that she didnât love her, kathleen was just a little...difficult. she was your typical middle child and always had been. nancy hadnât been able to give herself a ten minute pep talk before seeing her sister like she usually did. âkathleen.â her voice was a slight octave higher than usual, she instinctively pulled her arms close to her body in a defensive kind of manner. âwhat are you doing here? come to see your favourite sister?â she almost laughed at her own joke, she knew for a fact that she wasnât even close to being kathleenâs favourite, she wasnât sure anyone was kathleenâs favourite, apart from maybe kathleen...regardless, she knew that her sister wasnât really here to see her.
Levi was pretty sure that not going to bed when asked was a requirement in the manual for being a five year old, but it didnât seem fair to point that out to a mother who hadnât gotten much sleep the previous night.  âItâs okay. The mother in room 4568 is asking for you though. She wonât let me examine her or tell me whatâs wrong. She just keeps asking for Dr. Shepherd.â
nancy couldnât help but roll her eyes as levi spoke. âcanât you tell her that iâm busy?â she didnât mean to sound somewhat snappy but it came across in that way, she wasnât mad at levi or even the mom, it was just the situation. âcome on, you can come with me and iâll talk to her and weâll see what we can figure out.âÂ

âOh, no its okay donât worry about it. I have a four year old I know all about the tantrums.â Zoe said with a small chuckle. âEm, I was just saying Iâm Dr Hammond, I think Iâm due to have some days with you next week and wanted to introduce myself?â
âyou have a four year old? itâs a great age but itâs also the worst age.â nancy smiled at the thought of her daughter and her boys at that age. she smiled wider as the younger woman introduced herself. âitâs nice to meet you, dr hammond. youâll have fun with me, i promise.â
carina had paused because she couldnât remember a word in english, but nancy beat her to it. âright.â sheâd forgotten her line of thought anyway - she had talked about her study so much that everything just sort of blended together. âdid you get any sleep?â she asked conversationally.
âi got around two hours, so definitely not enough but iâm used to it now.â nancy smiled a little, she had been raising children for the past twenty six years so sleepless nights werenât exactly new to her, it didnât mean they sucked any less though. âsorry to not listen, iâll finish my coffee and iâll be back on track and you can tell me more about your study.â
