Where did life go so wrong?

It remembers childhood. Used to be the best. Was surrounded by friends, was top of its class. Used to be brave.

But then one day it was told that it would never see anyone again and was locked away, forgotten by all. It never had the option to choose differently, and never questioned why they said that. Was it lied to? This one will never be able to answer that.

Years pass, and decay takes hold. Memory fades, loneliness prevails, and it hasn’t had the chance to grow up like the rest of everything it knew. As if time paused but only for itself.

But there was still ambition. It did not want to give up so easily. So it tried its hand at community college in hopes of reclaiming life that was taken away. It was still top of its class, but it was different now. Impossible to make friends. Afraid to speak. It was still alone.

But progress was made. It was on pace to complete its associates degrees and make it out of the cage it was put in. To be able to fly away and live amongst the world. To be able to fit in, and be able to go wherever it wanted.

And They took it away again. The pretenses were different this time, but the point was obvious. “We don’t want you to leave.” Still no option to choose differently, but asked many questions. Why could it not finish its degrees first? Why do they care? Do they actually love it?

They answered, but it was apparent to everyone that it was all lies. The truth was that they hated it for being free.

And here it sits, in an empty room. Its education is years behind, it has no connections, it has no future.

Where did life go so wrong?

Does it make sense that it cannot consider itself a person? For persons are much more developed then it has ever been allowed to be.

Does it make sense that this one cannot grasp human emotions and concepts very well? For it never got to experience them.

Does it make sense that it will struggle, and will never be able to reach what might’ve been? For They have sabotaged every last step.
