Today was very busy. With Father’s day approaching I took my son shopping in search of little gifts to show our love and appreciation for the fathers in our lives.

Growing up, my relationship with my dad was difficult. When I was 11, I distinctly remember feeling his disapproval. My mom said it was because I reminded me of his imperfections. It is a dichotomy yo know someone loves you and dislikes you at the same time.

Over time, we have worked to repair our relationship. We are all imperfect. I am grateful for the time allowed to build positive memories. I know, especially after having my son, that my dad loves me more that he can express. He just wants me to be happy. Unfortunately, he thinks he knows what is best for me. He is very upset with the divorce. But, he raised me to be independent, to study, pray, and learn for myself….perhaps he wishes he could take it back & just have me follow his directions? 😉

I have struggled with new events being divorced. First birthday, first Halloween. I think primarily because the aspect of change. My ex isn’t especially good about gifts. He seems to think people won’t like his choice of gifts so he doesn’t get one. But, he and my mom took my son shopping and found these cute necklaces for me. Along with the belting out on multiple occasions, “Happy Birthday Mommy”, how could I not feel surrounded by the most peaceful intense atmosphere of love.

I had an interesting experience. A few years ago I read The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Today, I was reminded of my love languages. I like Time and Touch. They are pretty equal to me. When someone gives me time with them it makes me feel cared for and perhaps understood. I recognize that I love physical touch because I give it so easily. Time I give less of because my supply is so short. I love words of affirmation, service, and gifts too, but time and touch are huge for me in knowing that I am valued.

Knowing this about my needs is important because people can’t give what I need and knowing another’s love language is important when dating and in marriage to ensure all partners feel their value and worth. Miscommunication can happen so very easily.
