Cabeza de Vaca (Nicholas Echevarria,1991) Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, Alonso del Castillo, Andres Dorantes, and Estebanico, black Arab, have crossed all America on foot from Florida to the shores of the Pacific. Naked, shedding their skin like snakes, they have eaten wild grasses and roots, worms and lizards, and anything that they could find alive until the Indians gave them blankets and prickly pears and ears of corn in exchange for their miracles and cures. Cabeza de Vaca has brought more than one dead Indian back to life with his Paternosters and Ave Marias hand healed many sick ones making the sign of the cross and blowing on the place where they hurt. @mykelanowicki is a young artist from Illinois with a portfolio full of creative and surreal illustrations. SL: In your more recent work there has been a blend of Nature mixed with human anatomy, whether it be animals, cancer cells, or fungus. Is there a larger theme you are working with here? Mykela: I've always fantasied on the idea of life, it's a weird concept to grasp. Wouldn't you say? Life, death, the whole experience just leaves me dumbfounded. Through out my art it's me understanding that idea, theres so much beauty in this world even in some chaos there's beauty. when I create these pieces im expressing how I feel, but when people look at my work I want them to feel how ever they feel, because in the end I don't care if the thoughts add up, I just care that people are feeling something from it. I am simply just learning what it is to be alive in my own way. #art #illustration #zine #diyottawa #chicagoartist #illinoisartist #creative
Jazzpunkx is a local artist from the otherside of the bridge in Gatineau. This his second apperance in the Savage Loon with another illustration taking up the inside cover (this time in coloir, bringing full justice to his style). S.L: Would you aggre that the term punk is becoming phoney? If so,what does Jazzpunkx see for the future of punk? Perhaps a new label? Could we survive without labels? I also heard you are working on a skate rat zine, tell us about it. Jazzpunkx: I wouldn't say phoney but its old and need too dig his own grave slowly, I like the music tho. Future? Theres is no future but a miracle would be awesome. Music wise I'd like new individual band with there own sound, there own look becuz people like the fashion behind, that's even too much of a miracle too ask. [and] O yeah, I'm working on a little project, little post of poems I did through the years about skateboarding and how pure this act is and how much I love doinig it. Mostly talking about how u can grow your own plant which in this case a streetplant is a skateboard rare plant that u can grow, [to show] how much [there is to] learn, alot trought this toy for personal life exp. The Savage Loon was originally thought up as a vehicle to show case the work of different artists. Vol. 2 has pulled together artists from Ottawa, Gatineau, Mississauga, and Chicago. In the next few days there will be posts of content alongside interviews with the artists themselves. First up is @sandwinch who came back for Vol. 2 to provide the custom masthead. (shout out to @3thanallen who snapped the cover photo.) Hey brother! It has been almost a year since Vol. 1, do you feel you have improved your skills since the last title you lettered for us? What do you think has inspired this progression most? Hey man! Thanks for the question! I would say yes, I’ve improved since the original hand-lettered masthead. Hand-lettering and custom logos are an area of graphic design I’ve focused on practicing as much as possible over the past couple of years. I’ve been working on not only the ability to create concepts from scratch but also the ability to vector concepts in software which is equally as important. A few years ago I realized I wasn’t happy with my fully digital process of creating logos, I wanted to get back to the basics of creating designs in pencil first. I’ve read a few books on the topic and follow some key people I feel are setting the bar in the practice. I’m just barely scratching the surface but I’m really stoked to continue learning! #diyottawa #ottawa #zine #lettering #graphicdesign #local #localartist #ottawaartist

What is a poet? A poet is an unhappy creature, whose heart is tortured by deepest suffering, but whose lips are so formed that when his sighs and cries stream out over them, their sound becomes like the sound of beautiful music. His fate is that of the unfortunates who were imprisoned in Phalaris’ brazen bull, there to be slowly tortured over a low fire; their cries could not reach the tyrant’s ear to strike terror into his heart, they came to him transformed into sweet music. And men flock about the poet, saying: Sing for us soon again; that is to say, may new sufferings torture your soul, and may your lips continue to be formed as before; for the cries would only make us anxious, but the music is lovely. And the critics come upon the scene; they say: Quite correct, so it ought to be by the rules of esthetics. To be sure, a critic resembles a poet to the hair; he lacks only the sufferings in his heart and the music on his lips. And that is why I would rather be a herder of swine, and be understood by the swine, than be a poet and be misunderstood by men.

Jean-Paul Sartre and his french existentialist crew are like the Beatles of philosophy, as in they are usually the gatekeepers to a much sexier and fashionable way of thinking that most undergrads and teenagers gravitate too. Still, everyone should read Sartre at least once and his bro Camus as well, and of course Simone De Beauvoir because shes the George Harrison of all of this. #existentialism #jeanpaulsartre #albertcamus #simonedebeauvoir #philosophy

The Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, a classic of 20th century philosophy, is a short book, about 70 pages, consisting of remarks on the essence of language, the nature of the world, of logic, and ending with comments on ethics, religion and mysticism. It is written with logical precision and poetic intensity. It is to be read as an initiation, drawing a limit to the expression of thoughts by expressing what can be said as clearly as possible. "The more the nail has been hit on the head--the greater will be it's value." As Wittgenstein himself wrote in the preface "it's purpose would be achieved if it gave pleasure to one person who read and understood it." #Wittgenstein #philosophy #tractatuslogicophilosophicus #logic #language #Austrian

"Execution of Socrates" by Jacques-Louis David, 1787 This painting depicts the execution of Socrates as told by Plato in the phaedo. Socrates was convicted of corrupting the youth of Athens and introducing strange gods. His sentence was to die by drinking poison hemlock. Socrates, rather than fleeing when the opportunity arose, usesd his death as a final lesson for his pupils, and faced it calmly. In the method of "elenchus", otherwise known as the Socratic method, a series of questions are posed to help a person determine their underlying beliefs and the extent of their knowledge. He most famously exclaimed "all I know is that I know nothing!" which has echoed through the millenia to become the first step in finding 'truth'. #Socrates #philosophy #ancientgreece #Socratic #truth

The threshold before madness is as thin as a piece of tissue paper. The culmination of many years of questioning produced this scene that will forever be echoed down the corridors of history. "Nietzsche went mad when he saw a beaten horse!" But why did he lose his sanity? After destabilizing the grounds of morals and the systems of thought that defined his time, he had no where else to go but inside himself, and he did what the majority of us will never do: he erased the line between his own understanding of existence and the outer shell of "man" we are expected to carry until we die with "dignity" i.e. Not embracing a beaten horse. I think he felt sorry for the horse, because the horse had no idea about the world around him, much like the majority of humans who are thrown into the world without knowing the rules. #Nietzsche #horseman #beyondgoodandevil #genologyofmorals #existentialism
Louis Althussed believes that instead of human nature, we humans have ideology alone. Ideology structures consciousness and is determined largely by "ideological state apparatuses", such as the church, the legal and education system, the media. These ideological state apparatuses have some degree of freedom of their own and are not simply tools of capitalism. The dominant ideology sucks in the individual so that the world cannot be seen in any other way. #Althusser #anti-humanism #Marxism #isms #philosophy
