Why should I do this you may wonder. Your student staff member does a lot of work you don’t see or don’t realize. Most door decs are created by hand. I have 32 residents plus four staff members to make door decs for. That’s almost 40 little things I have to make and 98% of the time, they end up vandalised or torn down. It’s heartbreaking. Bulletin boards are no better. I put six hours of work into my last board. Granted, my residents really like my boards so they don’t tear them down but I know plenty of staff members who’ve had their bulletin boards vandalised or torn down.

There’s also the fact that they have to deal with more than just your shenanigans. As a staff member, when we’re on duty, we’re in charge of a hold building, sometimes two. Incident Reports aren’t fun. Believe it or not, we don’t want to write you guys up. It ruins my whole night when I have to take someone’s ID number. If you’re ever asked for your ID, just give it. If you don’t have it, please follow what your student staff member is asking. Realize that we are students too and also want to be drinking with you but can’t because we value our jobs. Realize we also have that six page paper due in the morning that can’t be started until we write this report.

Be respectful of your student staff members. They get there before everyone else for almost every extended break and don’t get to leave until after everyone is long gone. I only had one final this semester, which I could have taken any day of the week. I could have been done by Tuesday but I had to stay to close the building after everyone left and I’m now stuck here until Monday.

Your student staff member is also in charge of planning programs that no one attends or trying to create a community on the floor even though no one wants to talk. I don’t care if you don’t like your staff member but you can at least respect the job they try to do.

We’re not stupid, we know what weed smells like. Stop smoking it/ keeping it in your room, we’ll notice.
