Album of the Week: Lonely Hearts Club âNo Jerks Allowedâ - The Pretty Greens
There are plenty of days we could all just use a little encouragement. This proves especially true in the case of being a female in todayâs society. Sometimes we just need a reminder that are feelings are valid, that we deserve the best and that our future is ours alone to conquer, and weâll get there when weâre ready.
While we continue on towards our dreams, at a walk or a run, the girls of Philadelphiaâs The Pretty Greens are here to stand in our corner. Their latest EP - The Lonely Hearts Club âNo Jerks Allowed,â provides a much needed nudge, with their varied garage pop stylings acting as a war cry for the oft-unspoken, but shared struggles we all come to experience in one form or another.
It begins with âElevator Eyes,â a blown-out boot kick to cat-callers, the ladies triumphantly declaring, âthis ainât no peep show, I just wanât to go homeâŚI wonât be abused.â The single is a triumphant takedown of those who feel the need to âlook at you like a piece of meat,â even when youâre pajama clad and make-up free. Speaking up for yourself and knowing your worth is a recurring theme in the EP with the threatening fuzz of âTiny Locket,â calling for independence from a hurtful lover and âOnce Before,â declaring the necessity of protecting hearts and minds from those you just canât trust, a quick vocal breakdown, nearing a rap, making a surprising, but welcome appearance.
As the girls previously explained on breezy single, âFirst Time,â these cries for social justice, the significance of being your biggest fan leads you onward, towards the next big thing, towards the future you deserve. So, find your voice in the Lonely Heart Club. The Pretty Greens are happy to welcome us all into their circle, well except the jerks.
Lonely Hear Club âNo Jerks Allowedâ is out now through Negative Fun Records.
If you arenât reading The Grey Estates you are missing out on one of the best music blogs going.
It seems to be a common feeling among my friends and I that there comes a point when turning older just isnât as wonderful as when you were a child. I donât know when it happens exactly, but since turning 26 last month Iâve been forever stressing. The Internet seems all too happy to point...
TGIF! "Elevator Eyes" premieres on The Le Sigh!
We're stoked to announce the official premier of our track Elevator Eyes on The Le Sigh today!
"The first few days of warm weather after a long winter are exhilarating. You can FINALLY say goodbye to long underwear and puffy coats and soak up the much-needed Vitamin D. It should be a glorious time to bask in the heat before it gets too hot, but your bliss is interrupted when someone hurls a "Hey beautiful" or "Why don't you smile?" your way. Ah yes, spring and summer also mean that the infuriating catcalling season is upon us! Two years ago, we were given Tomboy's "Sweetie" from THE LE SIGH Vol. I to blast while ignoring unwarranted comments from strangers. Today, we have The Pretty Greens' "Elevator Eyes" for channeling our frustration."
The official review and write-up is over here:Â http://www.thelesigh.com/2015/04/premiere-pretty-greens-elevator-eyes.html#moreÂ
We also made a couple of new friends today, and found out about a radio show called RIOT! based out of Tel Aviv at a station there called, KZRadio! You can check out Nitzan Pincu's programme and some of her latest show archives here:Â http://kzradio.net/
If you have trouble translating the web page (we suggest using Chrome to translate), you can click the third icon from the top of the page for SHOWS and to select Nitzan's show - just click on Riot! and a list of her recent shows will appear. So cool!
We also have a bit to announce coming up, including our tour dates with our amazing pals and label mates on Negative Fun in Greensboro, NC's Daddy Issues!  It's gonna be a great spring and summer, guys! Also in the news - Boston made it official, and it's going to be Riot Grrrl Day on April 9th every year in honor of Kathleen Hannah's visit to speak there this year on this day. NYC of course had it's own rebuttal via the Gothamist's Lauren Evans:Â
"The mayor of Boston has officially declared today "Riot Grrrl Day," in honor of Kathleen Hanna's appearance in that city this evening. Very cool, Boston, but guess what? Today's Riot Grrrl Day here in NYC, too, because Rebel Girls don't wait for mayors to sanction their goddamn holidays."
