the reason we all love the punch so much is because it shows so much emotion. Charles Xavier is a man who loves everyone in a peripheral way, who doesn’t let people get close to himself and is in constant, careful control of his emotions. He has to be, it’s the only way to stay sane with a mutation like his. But Erik gets under his skin in a way that no one and nothing else does. Can you imagine Charles Xavier punching someone in the face, just generally? He’s the exact opposite of a violent person! But HE CARES SO MUCH ABOUT ERIK AND THAT’S WHY ERIK COULD MAKE HIM MAD ENOUGH TO DESERVE A PUNCH TO THE FACE

I think erik would encourage (endlessly pester to the point of nagging, out of love) charles to get sober. He can simultaneously understand charles' need to dull the senses or take the edge off because so many voices and so much pain is exhausting, while also being convinced that its holding him and his power back. Not to mention (and he does) the long term health effects. I think one time they get in a fight about it and erik yells at him about how dangerous a mind like his will be when hes old and has been pickling his brain in alcohol for decades. Charles doesnt give him the satisfaction at the time but this is what makes him start making the effort to pull back and eventually stop drinking entirely.
