About shooting musicians in general and before the concert at the Rainbow Theatre, London (19.11.74) says photographer Johnny Dewe Matthews:
The first photo: “I put Freddie on this cheap wooden staircase. I found it quite interesting. Stairway To Heaven and all that. He knew exactly what he looked like. While I was taking pictures, he made suggestions. It had something from the director.”
The second photo :“ I put a ladder to something shared group. I wanted to put them in a vertical format. I used a plastic camera. And they were very intrigued. I hid under a woven cloak, like some photographer of the XIX century”.
Third photo: “Photo taken behind the scenes in the dressing room of Astoria (Rainbow) in Finsbury Park. Freddie let me mind my own business. I thought he was very quiet, very taciturn. He was suspended, as if immersed in some own world.”
The fourth photo: “I Remember taking this picture, I said to Brian:"you have very beautiful hands.” He just looked at me questioningly. Can’t exactly say that in this bottle , but alcohol in the dressing room was not. With this was strictly. I can assure you, this is not the possession of Keith Richards.“
The fifth photo: "They were engaged in that or imposed makeup, or dressed, or talked to each other. None of them came up to me and asked me anything about myself. The most distant of the four was John Deacon. I don’t think he liked me very much. I guess he thought I was a pompous jerk.”
The sixth photo: “it was clear that they perfectly create the power of black and white images. I like the way they seem to come out of the dark here. From Freddie to smell some very expensive perfume, after shave, wonderful scent”.
Seventh photo: “Readiness number one: Roger Taylor lights his last cigarette, and John Deacon checks his reflection in the mirror before going on stage.”
Eighth photo: “Brian and John are waiting for the signal that it’s time to go on stage. I remember Brian telling him about some brand of American guitar. I thought he knew the guitars. I think this shot conveys an atmosphere of some nervousness before the concert.”
Ninth photo: “I followed the band down and there I heard a loud roar of the crowd. The others had already taken the stage, but it took Freddie a little more time to get ready. The photo shows that he is very focused, that he is in some other world. On stage, he was incredible, very charismatic. It was in contrast to how quiet he had been before.”
