every time I start thinking about el's ending, I start crying again. the whole finale (and season five) was just garbage but I think el's ending was the absolute worst part. it almost makes the rest of the show un-rewatchable now (I guess unless you pretend none of season five is canon).
el's humanity and personhood were disregarded her entire life until she escaped the lab, and the duffer brothers took that from her in the end by treating her as this Magical Symbol for the other characters' journeys instead of as her own person.
they took the story of a girl who was abused and isolated her whole life, then finally got free and found family and love and connection, people she considered her home, and decided to end that story with her either dead and never truly getting to experience living as a normal girl for more than 0.05 seconds, dead after all of that abuse, dead after thinking there was no hope for her future (almost as if they were validating that line of thinking), or she's alone. the girl who learned last season that her true strength came from love will never see her loved ones again. the girl who every step of the way has been independent and making her own choices but also realised that she wants most of all to be with the people she loves, that they were the home she was choosing for herself, now just has to be off on her own forever.
and to find out that this was apparently always the plan, that after all that getting us invested in her and her story and wants and dreams and flaws and fears, they didn't see her as a person on her own but just an idea? this is possibly the worst ending I've ever seen for a character I loved: to be told I was never supposed to see her a character to begin with but just a symbol for the rest of the characters.

the way that love is genuinely just not fucking winning
sibling love: jonathan and will had like one scene together, kali wants el to kill herself and theyāre highkey beefing, the wheeler siblings all have lobotomies, and lucas and erica didnāt get a single meaningful scene
parental love: joyce hasnāt spoken to jonathan once since telling him to go in the van, hopper doesnāt trust el, and karen is there ig
friendship: genuinely steve and dustin are the only solid friendship rn, mike and will (byler aside) are supposedly best friends who just donāt interact all volume, el and max talked for one second even though elās love for max literally brought her back to life in season 4, genuinely not a single stand out friendship in this entire volume save for dustin and steve
mentorship: so robin was telling will to move on? what kind of fucking advice is that it completely twists the meaning of her beautiful speech, and also letās talk about how mr clarke was highkey nasty towards erica like where the fucking love at
romance: boy donāt even get me started here. jancy bones, mileven has zero chemistry or meaningful moments, reducing wills love to a little crush, jopper fine ig but a whole nothing burger, the only good one was lumax, i actually wouldnāt change anything about that

itās just sad to see that this is what my favorite show has come to. I was so certain that love would be the key to it all, and that this season would be character driven, showing love that comes in all shapes and sizes. I thought that they would at least treat wills love for mike with some more respect, byler canoncy aside, why is his love described as nothing more than a crush when thatās just not what weāve been shown as an audience. It also breaks me that the love between the byers family once drove this show and now we just donāt see that. Jonathan and Joyce had such a wonderful dynamic and season 1 and we just donāt see that anymore. The party used to also be so close and now they justā¦donāt talk? I was certain that theyād at least give elmax a better reunion but they just didnāt. I really donāt understand how you can say that this is a show about love when you just donāt show that
