Apartment hunting isn't going too well, at least Jason isn't the worst roommate.
part 1 part 2 part 3
Jason was nodding along with her ranting, watching the gesticulation of her hands as she grew more passionate.Â
He wasnât entirely paying attention, but noticed the silence in the moments that she would stop, stilling to take a sip of her coffee before continuing. Her prior pattern was the reason that it took Jason a few more seconds to realize that she was no longer talking, choosing to stare blankly ahead at the lid of her drink.
Jason tilted his head slightly, an iced white mocha with toffee cut according to the sticker that her hand was half covering. She had gotten Jason the same drink, but hot and he had to admitâit wasnât the worst but he definitely wouldâve preferred a Frappuccino.Â
He tried to remember the last five minutes of their primarily one-sided conversation but found himself drawing a blank and deciding to choose the safest option:Â
âSounds toxic.â She replied in a gesture of âso-soâÂ
More of her rant was coming back to Jason now, âI also liked Barbara Gordon, though. She makes it hard not to.â She scowled, throwing her hands up and sinking into the couch âStep in line, I guess.â she mumbled, then, as if finally fully processed what Jason said, she shot up to face him, âLiked?â there was a twinkle of hope in her eyes that Jason thought wouldâve been better for her to extinguish.Â
âI left a note on her door confessing my feelings and she never replied.â Jason left out that he had wanted to be a better person for Barbara, or that she had flirted with him firstâseemed a little bit like rubbing salt in the wound.
âPussy.âÂ
He tossed one of her pillows at her head with enough force it lightly knocked her head backwards before bouncing onto the floor.
She was uncaring, moving as if Jason hadnât thrown the pillow as she leaned to pick up the pillow and rest it in her lap.Â
There were traces of her everywhereâher pillows on his couch, an egg rug in front of his tub (Jason hated it, but she reminded him about how she had slipped and busted her ass first time she showered. Jason had insisted it was a skill issue, yet hadnât removed the ugly thing.)Â
She had an overflowing tote bag of tufting materials next to Jasonâs couch that she had claimed with her cartoonishly oversized comforter folded neatly at the end. Her laptop, notebook and pens resting on top of it. That was something Jason took particular note of: there were only traces of her, small signs to notify that she had existed there, rather than a complete overtake of his apartment or anything to tether her.
His temporary roommate could leave at any time she wished to. She had no furniture to haul, her shelves of books were safely in storage. She just needed to gather her tufting supplies, shove her most used stationary into her backpack, roll up her egg rug and her clothes were already shoved her into a duffel bag she kept stashed in the hallway closet. Jason imagined the comforter and the pillow would go back into the white garbage bag she had brought them in. He had checked the cabinets for more of her; a cup that for sure wasnât his, a coffee that Jason had never tried, but his roommate simply adjusted to his life, his routine. She used his plates, his cups, his coffee (replenished one a week, rather than one a month now.)Â
âHow's the apartment hunt going?â He wasnât in a rush to have Dickâs toxic situationship out, though he would never admit it. Jason enjoyed having her at his safe houseâsomething he would also never admit to her and more importantly, never thought he would feelâthe thoughts came as a surprise to Jason, a feeling deeper than casual acceptance that he wouldâve never fathomed could come from his original apathy towards her.Â
He liked how she kept his safe house cleaned, he enjoyed her cooking, she was there to talk to him. He appreciated her, valued her input.Â
Jason was stubbornâhe had put particular emphasis to ask her about how apartment hunting was progressing, it had transformed into a habitâa way for him to remind himself that he didnât want her here.Â
She sighed, âWell, I couldnât find a better rent price before the murder.â Her shoulders were slightly slumped, âI just need to finish my masters.â Jason moved to question her father, but then one of her oven timers went off and she immediately jumped up to tend to it, changing Jasonâs course.
âWhat are you making?â Jason moved her laptop, notebook and pens to the coffee table before he propped his sock covered feet on top of her folded comforterâpart insolent child and part asserting some form of dominance: this was his home and if Jason wanted to do something, he would.Â
âWell, when I saw that you had a Le Creuset I just knew I had to make a stew.â Came the shouting from the kitchen, he heard the timer bouncing around as it continued to beep and she struggled to turn it off.Â
âLe Creuset?â When had Jason got a Le Creuset? He heard her shout something back at him, but was too focused on trying to remember where he had got one, before briefly panicking when he realized that it had been a gift from Barbara and he chose to keep that to himself.
âIâm gonna add some potatoes and maybe some broccoli. I think, Iâm not too sure, right now Iâm just trying to get this finished.â Her voice grew increasingly muffled voice now, as if she was talking while being wedged in a cabinet.
The smell of her cooking wafted through the safehouse and Jason relaxed further into the couch, closing his eyes and listening to her distant movements from the kitchen as he tried to remember the last time that someone had cooked for him before her.
It had become their daily routine since he had helped her ditch the shitty Bludhaven apartment. An arrangement that neither discussed, but fell into naturally.Â
Jason would came home from his patrols to the pleasant smells of her cooking breakfast, she made him lunch if he was home, or mentioned he was going to do something non vigilante related. Then she always made extra portions for dinner, always made extra to fill containers of Tupperware for him to take on the go. Jason had been eating from Tupperware that he hadnât even known he owned.
She seemed to always be finding utensils, pots, supplies that Jason hadnât touched once and sometimes, he found himself reminded of Gabby.Â
âHas Dick asked about me?â Jason leaned over to the coffee table, the small shelf where his most recent book rested as he listened to her chop the aforementioned vegetables .Â
âDick doesnât even know Iâm back in Gotham.â The water was running, he heard the tumble of vegetables,âSo he hasnât.â She wiped her hands off on the new and improved paper towels she had purchased for him, âWhere does he think you are?âÂ
âFloating through Greece.â Jason turned to look into the kitchen, seeing her slouched shoulders and could imagine the glazed over look in her eyes, the empty stare that she had met him with he showed up at their agreed upon time. âDick never appreciated my food as much as you do.âÂ
âWell, Dick can cook.â
âYeah.â her defeated tone matching her posture.
âI can cook too.â
âProbably not well.âÂ
This time, when he threw a pillow at her and it hit her square in the back of the head, causing her to jump and drop the bell pepper she had moved onto washing.
His almost sister-in-law kicked the pillow back into the living room, her aim was horrible and the force behind her kick was weakâthe pillow didnât even reach the coffee table. Jason turned back to his book, grinning. Then, as if he realized how unbearably domestic this entire situation was, he forced the smile down.Â
âI set up a weekly menu.â pointing towards the large chalk-sign on the fridge that was completely empty. Jason shot a quick glance towards where she was pointing, âDoesnât look set up.â Internally, his heart was constricting at how horrifically domestic the act of creating a weekly menu was. Panic was beginning to set in, not because of how much Jason wanted her gone, but because of how desperately Jason found himself wanting her to stay.Â
In response, she held a piece of stained printer paper up that she had drawn a fancy border around the lettering on the inside. âI kept forgetting to ask you to buy chalk.â
âBuy yourself chalk.â He turned the page, âIâm in my reclusive era.â Jason didnât even know what she meant by that. He closed his book, unable to fully focus on the pages when he was listening to her move around in the kitchen, lightly humming, sometimes cursing. He tucked the book back into the coffee table shelf and turned towards the remote where he browsed through the channels until he found reruns of The Sopranos âIf I see some, Iâll pick it up.âÂ
Translation: He was going to be looking for chalk immediately after leaving tonight.Â
âThank you, okay so hereâs the menu. Today is Monday, so you already know what weâre having.â She had placed the paper down and was moving onto chopping Broccoli.
âTuesday is going to be Reeses Puff cereal for breakfast, lunch is going to be turkey pinwheel sandwiches and uhhh dinner I think is tied between Pork Carnitas and homemade pizza. I was to ask you what you wanted more.âÂ
Jason rested the remote on his chest, âPork Carnitas.âÂ
âGreat, so then Wednesday is gonna be homemade pizza, what kind of toppings do you think I should use?â she stepped out of his view and he heard the fridge opening.
âSurprise me.â Jason listened to the clicking of her setting another timer, âGotcha. Thursday Iâm making homemade bagels for breakfast, buffalo chicken wraps for lunch and then cheese tortellini for dinner.âÂ
Jason closed his eyes, listening to the sound of her footsteps around the kitchen, then out of the kitchen. He cracked his lid open just enough to see the vague shape of her stepping over the arm of his couch, settling into the cushion and pulling her knees to her chest, then just before Jason closed his lid again, he watched as she mustâve decided it wasnât a comfortable enough position and tossed her legs over the arm, looking towards the TV.
Jason closed his lid.
âThe Sopranos?â Jason didnât look, but pictured her puzzled expressionâraised brows, maybe a light grin on her face as if a joke was told. The clarity that Jason pictured her with was startling.Â
âI also like Paternity court.â a guffaw from her, as if it wasnât believable. Jason was alarmed at the comfortable silence they fell intoâhe was growing increasingly uncomfortable with the ease that she had intertwined herself with his life, adapted to his home and his routine.Â
âWhat about Friday?âÂ
Jason decided the silence was too much. There it was again, that terrifying word, it was all too domestic.Â
âFriday is gonna be spinach-artichoke flatbread for breakfast, lunch is leftover and then C-ca-cassoulet for dinner.â He laughed at her terrible pronunciation.Â
âSaturday is leftovers and then Sunday is leftovers too, but Iâll make chili dogs for dinner.â Jason forced himself to think of negatives to living with her: Dickâs ex-girlfriend, not a vigilante sometimes she left her shoes in the middle of the walkway and Jason tripped over them.
Jason cracked a lid just in time to watch as she brought a pillow to her chest, resting her chin on it.Â
For someone who had side-eyed him for watching The Sopranosâshe was invested.Â
Sometime during the middle of The Sopranos rerun (and most importantly, when it was safe) Jason opened his eyes to look at her: she had the audacity to have fallen asleep, slumped in the couch cushion and never having let go of the cushion.
Jason turned away just as quickly, turning the volume down slightly and when his phone vibrated, he only half-heartedly checked it.
His eyes widened when he realized who had messaged him, as if summoned: Dick
Dickiebird 6:10pm:Â
Have you ever been ghosted before?
Jason 6:15pm (he didnât want Dick to think he deserved an immediate reply):
No.
Dickiebird 6:15pm:
She literally moved out without telling me.
Jason 6:17pm:Â
Who?
The âwhoâ was now snoring loudly just a few foot away.Â
Dickiebird 6:18pm:
You fuck, just my long-term girlfriend. You know, just someone Iâve spent like 25% of my life with.
Dickiebird 6:25pm:
I walked into her old apartment and right into some naked old-man booty. Iâm traumatizedÂ
Dickiebird 6:29pm:
Câmon man, not you ghosting me too.Â
Dickiebird 6:34pm:
???
Jason shoved his phone into his pocket with a huff.Â
He would tell her laterâmaybe. Jason didnât want to imagine her crestfallen face that Dick had taken so long to check in on her, that someone else had moved in.Â
âIâve never seen you text before.â Her voice was hazed with sleep, eyes half-lidded and at any moment, he bet that she would fall back asleep.Â
âNot many people text me.âÂ
She yawned, âWas it Dick?â Jason had a choice here: he could tell her the truth, that it was Dick and the contents of their text, or he could say that it had been Roy.Â
Then, he decided that the truth wasnât his to withhold, âYeah. Complaining about being ghosted.â She burrowed herself deeper into the couch, âThatâs all he cares about, huh?â her sleepy expression marred with thinly veiled bitterness.Â
Jason moved his feet and she leaned forward, half unfolding the comfortable but not shaking it out, choosing to fight with the lopsided mess that she had created for herself instead.Â
Jason leaned over, pulling the other side out for her to avoid having to watch the pitiful sight of her growing frustration. âHe wasnât even worried about me.â more of a statement than a question. Jason let the silence settle between them long enough that she began settling in to go back to sleep before one of her kitchen timers went off.
âUgh!â The comforter landed in a heap where she had been, standing quick with mouth tightened into a thin line, muscle in her jaw tense and defined before speed walking to the kitchen while mumbling about Tinder. He watched as she tossed her earlier chop of.. broccoli into the boiling pot, turning the oven down, all traces of sleep gone.
-
A pair of annoyingly familiar cowboy boots were tipped over at Jasonâs entry way. Judging from the way that one of the boots was almost a foot away from the other, it appeared that they had been taken off in a hurry, quicker than Jasonâs gradual realization that he had walked in on something that he wasnât supposed toâhalf hoping that he was wrong but knowing that he wasnât.Â
He was alarmed, not confused when he stepped into the living room to see an uninvited Roy standing beside the couch, leaning over a too familiar form on Jasonâs couch.
The scene was slow to register. Not because he wasnât disgustingly aware of what he had almost walked intoâHe didnât want to put the pieces together, it made sense; Tinder, rebounds, she had become an almost permanent fixture on the couch. She knew Roy but from a distance, so maybe it wasnât a dating app that brought the pair of them together, but a recently discovered shared similarity that Jason hadnât known existed. He was trying to place Roy, why Roy? What about Roy? He was trying to rapidly sort through memories of Roy and Dickâthey had a semi-rocky relationship, teetering on the edge of friendship at times but in that moment, as Jason stared at their (thankfully) still clothed forms. Jasonâs memories came to him slowly, he was wading through the peat bog that encompassed his memories that had buried the less savory aspects of Roy and Dickâs relationship.Â
It felt like minutes before the scene in front of him registered, but it had likely only taken secondsâJason was horrified at the absurdity of the situation that he found himself in: he was simultaneously disgusted with the pair and irritatingly, slightly annoyed that Roy was the one leaning over his begrudging roommate. He had the petulant thoughtâthat should be him.Â
âJesus Christ!â Jason shouted, turning around from the pair, ignoring the stack of books piled on the coffee table, the prototype that Roy had been showing her. He immediately heard a high-pitched yelp, then a light grunt from Roy followed by the sound of a series of heavy thuds as objects repeatedly fell.Â
âI didnât know youâd be home so soon!â His roommate called, a higher pitch than usual. Then, a heavy thud that made Jasonâs mouth twitch up at the thought of her falling off the couch.Â
-
Jason told himself that the annoyance wasnât jealousy. He did want to be the one leaning over his roommate, but it wasnât like that it was just that. Jason decided that he was mostly annoyed that his poor couch had been victimized. There was no underlying meaning to the persistence annoyance that Jason felt. Yup. Yup. Not even a hint of underlying meaning.Â
Roy was a flirt, his roommate was Dickâs ex-girlfriend. It was perfect revengeâshe was single, Roy was too! And of course, Tinder had been mentioned. It wouldâve been more surprising if she wasnât fucking around with Roy.Â
Jasonâs leg was still bouncing as he glared at Roy, who couldnât care lessâhe was nearly kicking his feet with excitement as his plate overflowed with cheese tortellini. The pile of books that Jason hadnât looked at was resting in a haphazard, sloping stack on the floorâthreatening to fall again at any point.
âI didnât know you were such a good cook!â While she wouldnât make eye contact with Jason, who decided to attribute his irritation to their interactions occurring on his couch, that this was how his unwanted, irritating room mate had been repaying his kindnessâTinder hookups on his couch, traumatizing him with the memory of Roy leaning over her. Sure, he was standingâbut that meant nothing to Jason. They just hadnât gotten that far yet. Yup. That was it.
Nothing happened. Jason reminded himself. Nothing, not a single thing.Â
The horror of seeing Roy in his safe house was enough that Jason decided she had lived with him long enough. He resolved to see her out by the end of the weekâJason would find her a safe apartment cheaper than her Bludhaven one. He didnât care if he needed to buy out the building to do it.
If. It. Was. The. Last. Thing. He. Did. Seeing Roy in tight clothing was already almost too much.Â
Still, Jason didnât feel his anger dissipating even after Roy had left, and the next day, as he found himself shopping for her annoyingly long list of specific groceries, complete with aisles and the recipe she was planning he found himself still seething.Â
This particular grocery list was slightly more difficult for him to decipher, and not just because of her chicken scratch scrawl. He had been so frustrated that he had balled up the paper, crumbling it into a tight ball before he forced himself to admit his irrationality.Â
He was on âPepperoni, aisle 12 - Hawaiian roll pizzaâ Jason turned the cart accordingly, leaned to grab the pepperoni, agonizing for an extra second on what brand, before deciding it didnât matter and continuing on.Â
â Bacon, aisle 12 - Bacon bites âÂ
Jason was drumming his fingers on the handle of the cart as he waited for the older ladies talking together and blocking the bacon to realize someone was waiting to get past them and disperse.Â
They didnât, Jason had to go around and his annoyance grewâ this was why he never shopped for himself.
It was easier for Jason to blame his frustration on old ladies with no spatial awareness, old ladies that Jason had to maneuver around to get his begrudging roommates requested bacon, old ladies who gossiped about his handsome, how polite and what a gentleman Jason was when he was walking away. He caught a particular line, âhow lucky is wife is.â Because according to the old ladies, a man as handsome as him couldnât be single.Â
It was less easier for Jason to shift blame onto the annoyance of having to buy a new couch so he wouldnât be struck with the memory of what Jason had interrupted. Then, as he was heading towards the checkout line, he made a detour through office supplies and swiped a packet of Crayola multi-colored chalk.Â
-
Jason stood outside of his door, hand hovering over the handle for a few extra seconds as he strained to listen for any unusual noise. When he was confident that the only sounds that would greet him would be cooking, of sizzling food and timers ticking, he turned the knob and stepped inside. He had challenged himself to carry all seven bags of groceries in one tripâlight work.Â
It was then that he realized the expected sounds werenât there. He frowned, stepping into the kitchen and seeing that the oven was off. She didnât even have the ingredients to begin cooking out, he had looked at the clock before turning off the Camaro: 4:23pm, she was almost always done with her cooking by 4:30 because she knew that Jason would typically be home by 3:50pm, and he needed time to decompress, to clean himself off and settle into his casual clothing.
He had the brief thought that she had leftâpulled a reverse card on him and had Dick help her leave. There was a pile of dishes remaining from the breakfast that she had made earlier, a stack of unused Tupperware that waited to be filled with the extra portions she had cooked. Both of those deeply unusualâhad she been kidnapped? Was his safe house compromised?Â
Should he be looking for a ransom note? Jason allowed the grocery bags to slide to the floor, the pang in his chest wasnât worry for his annoying roommate, it was about his safe house. It was annoyance at having to potentially abandon it, annoyance about having to reveal that he was back in Gotham when Red Hood inevitably went to search for who had kidnapped her.Â
Jason called out to her, scowl deepening at the silence that greeted him as he began to walk through the safe house, footsteps cautiousâhe didnât know if the individuals who had potentially kidnapped her remained, ready to jump out at any second, ready to attack him because that was just the only reason that her cooking wasnât ready.Â
He could admit to having grown slightly spoiled, used to her care, her cooking and rigid schedule. It was comfortable, predictable, domestic. It wasnât normal for her to be off schedule, in fact it was deeply peculiar and concerning: she was currently digitizing multiple archives of old, out of print books while simultaneously keeping up with her side hustle coffee roasting job and fighting to get papers published. Jason couldnât go a day without hearing her complain about Article Processing Charges and per page charges.Â
She was working from home while navigating her apartment search (half-hiding from Dick trying to make amends) Did she still work as a barista? Or was that just an aspect of the coffee roasting job? Jason couldnât remember. Maybe, she was slacking? For once?Â
Except that wasnât her. She didnât slack. She complained often that people who slacked off didnât get their papers published, didnât get to work with accredited universities or influential figures of their field.Â
She had a stack of books once towering on the floor had collapsed on the floor by his coffee table, a sprawl of papers across the coffee tableâmessy enough that intruders couldâve grabbed her from the couch.
It couldâve been that Roy snitched, had told Dick where she was. They mightâve had an argument but she ultimately couldâve forgiven him. Jason frowned, deciding he preferred the intruder.Â
Jason paused when he saw the slightly cracked open door of his bedroom and the idea of an intruder became the only reason she hadnât been cookingâhe hadnât noticed any signs of tampering, of forced entry or a struggle, but he quickened his pace, stalling in front of his door to listen for movement, but only heard a faint, rhythmic breathing.Â
Soft, light, slow, Jason relaxedâit wasnât an intruder but Jason simultaneously found he didnât want to open the door, to see what he was certain would be there.Â
Jason inhaled, gently pushing open the door with his foot.
The first time that she had stayed at his safe house, drunk and lost with no where to go, Jason had left before she fell asleep. An intentional choice to create distance between them, he had wanted to stay, to see her sleeping, to make sure she didnât die in her sleep but it had all felt too personal, almost affectionate.Â
He had made the right choice, Jason would no longer need to wonder what she looked like sleeping in his bed, the image would be seared into his mind now.Â
She laid curled on his bed, only halfway under his covers with an empty bottle of Dovetail Whiskey he received as a cheap gift resting on his nightstand. She was wearing a thin, flowy camisole that disappeared into the sheets, likely a pair of over worn, baggy pajama pants underneath. He could picture them now: they couldâve been soft at one point, they probably had been, but now they were primarily covered in balls of lint with an odd scratchy texture that he had brushed against when she had been walking past him with an armful of her laundry.
Jason didnât have to brush against the shorts then: It had been a conscious choice that he remembered making, a curiosity that stemmed from how often she wore themâthey must be comfortable, he had thought. They must be made of the softest fabric that Jason had ever felt, then he was disappointed when they werenât.Â
There were tear strains trailing down her cheeks, wet puddles on his pillow. He shouldâve felt relieved: no intruder. She hadnât be kidnapped, she hadnât moved out. His chest was still tight, Jason willed himself to unclench his fists, he flexed his hand, then promptly clenched his fists tighter.Â
Why was she here? Should he move her? Wake her up? Jason stepped forward, trying again to unclench his fists, settling with them resting idly on his baseboard.
He wanted to touch her, a feeling reminisce of his reasoning behind brushing against her armful of laundry, having almost risked a collision with her that she had made some noncommittal sound of annoyance with him for the slight side-step she had done when overcorrecting with the assumption that Jason hadnât been paying attention to his proximity to her. If anything, he wouldâve preferred the head on collision, an excuse to grab her arms to steady her. For their hands to brush as she gathered her clothes, for her narrowed eyes and playfully biting remarks.
He knew how many exfoliating products she used, the lotions and balms pouring out of her tiny little shower caddyâa rotating selection of them, a mix of products that created something she called a âsignature scentâ that he thought was various faux cherryesque scents but she insisted was âShirley Templeâ.Â
Jason imagined himself slowly raising his hand to just graze the curve of her calf, the rising goosebumps across her skin where his fingers trailed.Â
He could reach out and touch her nowâthough part of the appeal was seeing her potential physical reaction to his touch, which he wouldnât see with the comforter covering her. Instead, Jason focused on the rise and fall of her chest, she shifted her arm, flexing, maybe to sleepily search for something, arm beginning to move in the motion of a lackluster sweep, the movement of someone who never really learned how to properly use a broom.
Jason didnât dare get closer. Breathing was out of the question, Jason was focused on entirely on her movements. She was murmuring now, words he couldnât make out initially before she continued to repeat them, growing more confident, her words less slurred.Â
âCome here.âÂ
Jason looked over his shoulder, as if there was someone else she could be talking to. He should leave, he should spin on his heel and walk right out, donât feed into this, he reminded himself. Nothing good can come of this.
Think of Dick. Think of him. Her hand raised, reaching for air, reaching only vaguely in his direction. Donât do it.
Donât do it. He stepped closer, one hand resting lightly on the baseboard as if it was spring-loaded to pull him away the moment they met contact.Â
Jason raised his hand to meet hers, a light touch. Enough that she would lower her arm, knowing that he was at least close to her. He hadnât expected for her fingers to lightly intertwine with his, a soft sigh of contentment from her as she began to lightly pull at him.Â
She thought he was Dick, he decided. That was how Jason could explain her actions and he found himself annoyed, upset. He wouldnât be a placeholder for his brother; she hadnât called for Dick, but that was irrelevant, even worseâ It couldâve been Roy that Jason stood as a placeholder for.
His thoughts spun from there: Why was she drinking? Why was she in his bed?Â
She was still tugging at his hand now, with slightly more force since Jason hadnât immediately caved.Â
She whined. Jason thought back to the first time he had found her drunk, when she hadnât wanted to come home and had ended up sleeping in his bed the first time. He could count his winsâleast she wasnât wandering the streets of Gotham this time.
Jason found himself allowing her to pull him closer, he wanted to be dragged into her arms.
Jason was completely, stone cold sober and still ended up slipping his leather jacket off, tossing it bundled onto the baseboard as she scooted to the side to make room for him to lay beside her.Â
Jason let her press herself against his chest, haunted by how well she fit--the perfection of her companionship with him.Â
He listened to her contented sigh as she positioned his arm around her torso, her lightly damp hair was bundled in a tangled mess between them and Jason slightly lifted the strands up and behind her so neither would end up laying on them.Â
He inhaled only the scent of cherries, trying to cement this moment to memory.Â
Her soft humming reverberated against his chest, âSo come on down and walk with me, and tell me I'm your manâ Jasonâs arm had rested limply over her, but in this moment he allowed himself to settle against her, tucking his arm against her to pull her just slightly closer.Â
âI only want to know a couple of things about youâ Jason could admit the small act of affection he allowed himself might send him down a spiral he couldnât come back from. He needed some balance, something to even the scales.
âYouâre an awful singer.â it was just him talking to himself, murmuring under his breathâhis own kind of protest.Â
âItâs a good thing Iâm not trying to be good then, Jason.â She sounded insufferably sober, irritatingly coherent and most importantlyâshe referred to him by name.
Jason was sat up instantly, using one hand to prop himself up and the hand that had been resting over her, now moved to the nape of her neck.Â
Her hair was bundled under his hand, scrunched and falling around as he turned her to face him.Â
Her eyes with half-lidded, she was grinning, there was no remorse on her face.Â
She only half-heartedly attempted to wiggle out of his grip, âYouâve been awake this whole time?â Jason asked, grip tightening to avoid a slight shake to his hands.Â
She raised a hand in a âso-soâ motion, not as sober as Jason thought. Not as inebriated as he thought.Â
She leaned towards him and Jason, to his horror, allowed itâ if Jason hadnât wanted her to kiss him, then he wouldâve kept her in place but when she didnât kiss him, just hovered close enough that just slight movement wouldâve had her lips against his he felt slightly conceited for thinking she would try.Â
âTanks for taking care of me.â The heat of her breath, the faint smell of whisky just ghosting over his lips. Jason closed his eyes, loosening his grip, but not entirely removing his hand from its place tangled in her hair . âI didnât do anything. Youâre just drunk.â A way for Jason to squash the magnitude her actions, to take them less seriously than they were.Â
âA little.â A sing-song tone. Had she talked to Roy like that?
Jason began to untangle himself from herânever again would Jason be someoneâs second choice.Â
âRoy rejected you, then?â She shook her head. âWhereâd you get that from?â Jasonâs hand moved to rest against the mattress between them. He scoffed, âRoy was leaning over you, on the couch and you looked guilty as hell the entire time afterwards.â
She furrowed her brows and out of the corner of his eye, Jason saw her hand move towards him. He was rigid, expecting a loving embrace; maybe to cup his cheek? Gently rub her thumb in circles against his cheek? Some sort of comfort to alleviate his annoyance?Â
She bypassed his cheek, moving right to his forehead and flicking him.Â
Moment ruined, Jason scowled, pushing away from her and standing. âWe were collaborating to make you something.â Jason grabbed the empty bottle of Dovetail, tossing it into the small trashcan to the side of the nightstand. âMaking.. me something?â Jason asked, trying to feign nonchalance but failing.Â
The prototype that had been in Royâs hands, them being fully clothed, Roy was standing. To acknowledge that meant that Jason would have to admit that he had overreacted, that he had been severely annoyed and had allowed that annoyance to derail his day for nothing, which wasnât an option.Â
That meant he would need to admit to himself that he had been jealous, looking too much into a situation that hadnât required it.Â
Her hand enclosed around his wrist, trying to pull him back towards her but Jason didnât budge.Â
âA bookend.â Jason thought back to the prototype, it⌠did.. it could.. be a bookend? She didnât stop trying to pull Jason towards her, but so lightly that Jason wasnât sure she had more force in her.Â
He wanted to move towards her, to feed into his one-sided affections that he refused to admit were actually affections. âI really appreciate you taking me in, even though it was technically a favor.â
Jasonâs reply was a half-laugh, nothing about this was amusing to him. âWhy were you at the library that night?â Jason looked at her then, noting her slight unsteadiness.
âIt was closed. I looked into it, they have no after-hours access.â He wanted to lay beside her more than anything. Jason wanted to assure himself that she was drunk, she wasnât thinking clearly, wanted to confirm that she wasnât in her right mind.
Jason could talk himself into it, say he was protecting herâsomeone with worse intentions than proximity couldâve found her but she was in his safe house and the only danger was his affection.Â
âYouâre not the only one who can trespass.âÂ
âI had valid reasons to trespass.âÂ
âRight, murder. Thatâs the most valid reason anyone can have.â She was no longer trying to pull Jason towards her, but not letting him go.Â
He was noticing the whimsical undertones her voice took when she was just buzzed (Jason had decided she must just be buzzed.) Enough to relax, but not enough to make increasingly dangerous and reckless decisions.Â
She exhaled, thumb rubbing circles against the soft underside of his wrists, âI saw you breaking in, following that poor man.âÂ
Jason felt the hair on his neck rise. He was back in that moment, cement under his boots, wind cooling the sweat that had begun to accumulate under his mask, his suit. Jason was remembering the slick of his hair, then only beginning to plaster itself across his forehead, tangling in his ears.Â
âI didnât know you were Red Hood in that moment. I guessed. I knew Iâd need a favor.â Jason refrained from telling her that he had briefly been planning to kill her in that momentâno witnesses allowed.Â
âHow did you guess?â The bored distaste, her impassivityâjust a cover for emotions that she couldnât process. It was her shield, defaulting into that monotone that grated against his every nerve.Â
Jason was once again facing the version of her that he had found insufferable and repetitive.
Her grip loosened, Jason couldâve shaken her off.Â
âYour specific emotional resentment towards Batman. The fighting style, it was like Nightwing. I didnât pay close attention. I took the risk when I saw the chance.âÂ
His begrudging roommate raised the comforter with her free arm, leaving an opening under for him. Jason stared at soft skin of her stomach where her camisole had bunched up. He shouldnât. He shouldnât, really, but he was.Â
Jason was gentle as he slid into the space she offered him, dutifully turning on his side to allow her to press against his chest. When he loosely wrapped an arm around her torso, hand just ghosting the small patch of exposed stomach he felt her relax against him with a soft sigh.
It felt so right. It wasnât a bold confession of love, there was no acknowledgement of feelings between them. It seemed the natural progression for the routine of domesticity that neither had been willing to risk putting words to. It was just as natural for Jason to fall asleep with her as it was for her to cook. Just as it was natural for Jasonâs grip to tighten around her in the morning when she had attempted to slide from the sheets as the sun was first poking through the blinds. It was natural for Jason to pull her tighter against him, it felt less a drastic change and more the culmination of small steps realizedâthis was always going to be the result of him finding her drunken and lost. This was always going to be the outcome of their library meeting, where their fire escape talks landed them.Â
When she cooked, Jason would find himself standing behind her, forehead against her shoulder. He would stand beside her, hand on her lower back, tapping along to the beat of the music she sometimes played. He kissed her shoulder, her temple, the corner of her mouth.Â
When he returned from patrol, she held her arms open for him and who would Jason be if he didnât settle between them? Who would Jason be if he didnât fall asleep with her scratching his hair while she settled her laptop between his shoulder blades, occasionally talking about her research as he faded in and out of consciousness.Â
He stopped asking about her apartment hunting, she didnât volunteer the information. She couldâve still been searching, but with Jason finding an increasing number of books scattered around his safe house, the few mugs he didnât recognize and more rugs, each more ridiculous than the last until her belongings had been so thoroughly intertwined with Jasonâs that he wasnât sure which of the books had originally belonged to him, he didnât think she was. Especially when she eventually returned to work, especially when Jason tried to play nonchalant when he visited her, as he waited for her, leaning against the body of his motorcycle while holding a specialty latte for her only to meet her halfway when she finally stepped from the front door of the industrial warehouse styled building.Â
It couldâve been a one night tryst, dumbed down to nothing but drunken cuddling. That didnât really work, not for Jason, who had taken her buzzed invitation as akin to being welcomed home. He had been near insulted when the first night after, she had the audacity to settle into the couch, bundled in her giant comforter and fully prepared to sleep. He had scoffed, changed into his worn sweatpants and a soft t-shirt before serious as a stone, settling into the couch with her. It had been awkwardâhis bulk wouldâve pushed her entirely off the couch as he slid between the cushion and her, but Jason had pulled her against him, confusion, snarky remarks and all but Jason had settled, turning on his side to create more room and planting his chin firmly on the crown of her head.Â
âJason. What the hell are you doing?â
âSleeping.âÂ
She let out a squeak as he squeezed her just briefly. âSleeping.â She repeated, trying to twist around in Jasonâs grip to look at him, arching her back, straining against his arms, but movement was difficult when she had bundled herself in the comforter while Jason laid on the outside. âStop moving. Let a man sleep.â A loud, drawn out groan, âThis is seriously uncomfortable! Iâm on the edge!â
âYouâre the one who decided weâre sleeping here.â
Silence. The tips of his ears were burning. Jason found he was too much on the metaphorical edge to sleepâresorting to thinking back to his latest Emma reread: If he loved her less, he might be able to talk about it more but he couldnâtâso he had resorted to this, inserting himself as if it was the most normal action for him to do.
Jason had lost his heart and unlike in Emma, that had come with the loss of his self control as well.
âDid.. you want to move to the bed?â That was an invitation. Jason didnât waste time, shuffling and scooping her up against his chest. Her eyes were wide, mouth slightly ajar as he walked towards his bedroom.Â
That was thatâshe simply slept there now while simultaneously not admitting they were formally dating.
Just roommates, who slept together, kissed, held hands.Â
No one was amused.Â

a/n: wow!! the end, feels weird to actually have.. completed a storyline. Especially one this old, I believe I started this in mid-late 2023 when I was at a very Dick Grayson point in my life.
The gradual realization that her relationship with Dick has ran its course--she's a cover for him, a comfort. She has always forgiven him, accepted him back but at the cost of her self respect.
Also known as a series of events culminating in action after Dick's repeated, half-assed failed attempts at getting her to move in with him.
part 1
part 2
It was the waiting that she didnât like.Â
It wasnât the risk of it allâ she had continued their relationship knowing that he was Nightwing, knowing what he did. Knowing that she was the second choice.Â
Some days, she woke up sick with anxiety, her shaky hands fumbling with a phone that didn't have any messages, any missed calls. She considered that a good outcome--Dick was safe, he had to be. Otherwise, someone would tell her.
Right?
From there, her thoughts would spiral and she found there was nothing but self loathing for her own choicesâthe situation that she put herself in and the way that she danced the line between desperately wanting to leave but terrified there was nothing out there for her other than Dick.
Working for the Bludhaven Police Station was safer than being a vigilante; more appreciated as well just as remaining ignorant allowed her to remain comfortable. No one gave free donuts to vigilantes who caused their home to be caught in the crossfire of some new villain. People gave donuts to cops, their ineffectual protections; if cops could do their jobs, there would be no need for vigilantes.Â
When Dick was fired from the Bludhaven police station, she hadnât admitted how happy she was been. One less thing to think about, one more barrier to separate himself from Barbara Gordon. She hasnât admitted either of those, likely ever would. It had filled with her hope for Dick to work a safe job. Then she had accidentally discovered he was Nightwing.Â
Awkward.
She liked to think she hid her feelings well, at least, until she had been so inconsolable, cried so intensely that she had thrown up all over Dick and herself.
She had cried even harder as he cleaned her up, trying to make sure she didnât choke on her own vomit while trying to reassure her; it was fine, no big deal, its not gross. âYes, I still love you.â She whispered, mimicking the solemn, pitiful tone he had directed towards her.
In the end, Dick didnât fault her for it. What could be expected from her?
Her feelings and the vomit, she had never understood why he wanted to work when the trust fund his parents had left him could support him better than any job: He had spent a decent amount on Halyâs Circus and 1013 Parkthorne Avenue and yet it hadnât even made a dent due to the diligent work of Lucius Fox.Â
She had noticed his presence on the fire escape almost instantly after she arrived and hated how excited she felt, so she feigned nonchalance despite her footsteps quickening.
Then he hadnât came inside and thinking that he might have been gone, she poked her head up to look up towards him half expecting him to have left, only to jump slightly when he was still there, âDick.â She called and couldnât help the grin when he jumped at the sound of her voice.
She turned in the direction he had been facing, but didnât see anything interesting enough to have him so mesmerized.
âYouâve been standing there for a while.â Dick grinned, the wind blowing his hair across his forehead and slightly covering his eyes until he turned his back to it.
She tucked her hair behind her own ears, the wind having dislodged it âI kinda wanted to see how long you would stand there.â It wasnât working, the wind just wouldnât let her leave good enough alone and she found herself roughly gripping her hair in a tight bundle that she held to stop it from becoming unmanageable.Â
Dick dropped down, and she stepped back to allow room for him to drop down on the freshly tuffed water bottle shaped rug she had recently finished. âIs this a new one?â Dick asked, raising an eyebrow she nodded âI finished it the other day, Iâm gonna make another Tuna one to go with the Salmon next.â Dick laughed âYou only have room for one rug in that bathroom.â
***
Dick had argued that his girlfriend had a rug for every occasion.
Dick enveloped her into a hug that she melted into, ever so slightly digging her fingers into the fabric of his jacket as if he was already leaving. Â
She was warm; a break from the cold of Bludhaven that he had spent so long in. Sometimes, she could forget all of the bad parts of Dick, she could pretend that she was the only one on his mind.Â
Dick had started stiff, but quickly found himself sinking into her warmth, the comfort of her. He had welcomed the cold, the distance but in moments like this, where she had completely enveloped him in a soft, selfless love he had wondered how he could have tolerated anything else before.Â
When she pulled away Dick found himself pouting âToo soon.â He remarked and earned her laughed âItâs always too soon for you, Dick.â That was true. He wanted her to live against him, actually that was too casual: he wanted her to be welded to him, inseparable, to never part.Â
âAre you staying the night?â She questioned, tilting her head to the side as she stared up at him, her hands fiddling with his own between them. âYou need to replace your gloves.â she slid one of her fingers into a worsening hole in his gloves.Â
âWell, now that youâve made the hole way, way bigger I donât think I have a choice.âÂ
âMy ring finger was a perfect fit, there was no saving it anyway.âÂ
A scoff âEvery night would be a sleep over if youâd move into Parkthorne.â half a joke, half a genuine offer.Â
Dick had talked about it with her beforeâonly in passing, a quick thought. Their relationship was in a weird place, even though she had told Dick that she forgave him (after weeks, and weeks of Dick groveling) she had a hesitance to her that she hadnât before.Â
Dick wasnât sure how to go from there: he wanted to return her love, to love her deeply and wholeheartedly, for there to be no barriers between the pair.
Yet he couldnât. He had been forced to come to the conclusion that it wasnât anything to do with her. She couldnât understand him as deeply as he needed, she couldnât help itâthere was just a huge, crucial part of him that she would never have access to.Â
She would never know what had happened on the roof of Parkthorne in the wake of the disaster that Tarantula had left, she would never understand why he chose to be Nightwing.Â
So why did he punish her for it?
He tried to be betterâit was best to live together, he ached for her close to him: the way their relationship had been before she had discovered that he was Nightwing, before Dick had came completely clean to her (almost), sitting her down and talking for hours, answering every question he felt almost as if the distance grew, except now she was pushing him away, when before she had eagerly welcomed him.
He could close the distance between them.
She wouldnât have to worry about him and he wouldnât have to worry about her; it was mutually beneficial for the both of them to live together.Â
He hadnât been prepared for the harsh look she gave him, the way that she pulled away from him completely, no longer fiddling with his hands she stood with her hands tucked into the pockets of her shorts, halfway sticking out as the pockets on womenâs clothes are never deep enough to engulf a hand.
âWhy do you keep bringing that up?â She asked, the anger in her voice was evident.Â
He could tell that it had been a build upâsomething that she was trying to resist yet found her defenses slipping each time.
âWhat do you mean?â Dick asked, a gentle hand offered towards her, only to have her take a further step back.Â
âLiving together.â She looked at him as if his offer had been the most idiotic thing that she had ever heardâ something so useless that she couldnât even believe that it had been suggested. Let alone thought of.Â
Dick felt a slight sting in his chest as his heart began to slip into his stomach.Â
The first time, Dick hadnât put too much thought into it. He had mentioned it offhandedly and had not expected a genuine answer but with the frequency of his questions increasing he found himself getting more, and more frustrated.Â
Confused. âLiving together isnât going to fix you lying to me for years, for dancing around your bond with Barbââ
âYou need to stop talking about herâdrop it entirely. She has nothing to do with usâ Dick hadnât intended to harsh, hadnât understood how much force he put behind his words. Enough to make her step back, to soften the sharpness of her shoulders and begin to sink in on herself.
He couldnât understand why she was so hesitantâthe proximity, it could fix everything. Dick had found himself so busy that he was only able to carve out a few times a week to see her.
Her reasoning was filled with holes:Â she could tell him that it just wasnât in the cards for them all that she wanted, but had never expanded: she had never said that it was because the commute was too far, that her current apartment was directly in the center of her favorite places and had a built in washer and dryer unit.Â
The conclusion that Dick was slowly coming to was that she hadnât fully forgiven him. He understood, she had broken up with him, told him to get out and to his horror, he had. They hadnât ever had an argument like that before and now that it had happenedâeach fight seemed unbearably close to that edge.
âWhy wouldnât I want you to move in with me?â Dick questioned, trying to close the distance but with every step towards her he took, she took on back,
âWhy would I want to?â She spat, not even bothering to look at him as she continued âWhy would I want to sleep in the same bed as Barbara Gordon?â Her hands moved rapidly to follow along with her words, Dick still, his eyes watching her every movement âOr StarFire, or Rose? You have never slept in a bed another man has laid in.â her rant had left her chest heaving and just when Dick thought she was going to end her rant, she continued âTo live in an apartment where youâve fucked other women on every surface.â It was only then that she decided to meet his gaze.Â
She had no tears in her eyes, just anger that blinded herâangry that he had asked her so many times, angry that she was still here and doing this fucking dance with him.
Dick felt the heat of her rage, the fire of it sucking the oxygen from the room and became unbearably aware of how precarious their relationship had become, that he might not ever be able to recover from his negligence.Â
Half of him hoped that her anger would dissipate as the silence dragged on.Â
He hadnât a clue on what to say that would have made the situation better because she was wholly-heartedly right; 1013 Parkthorne Avenue had been with him for so long that Dick could barely remember his previous apartments.Â
It had been there for his almost-marriage to Starfire (now that had been a rough engagement) and when he had slept with Barbara during it. Dick had lived there when he had taken Rose Wilson under his tutelage, when Dick tried to think of memories that he had of her being there he began to realize that he really didnât have too many of them.Â
Primarily because she hadnât ever wanted to visit him. It was always Dick visiting her with rare occasions. Quick visits where she had laughed at his lack of decor. Dick had argued back that it was better than having a rug for every miscellaneous object that she liked, then he had joked that if she lived with him she could decorate it to her liking, earning a laugh and her reply that she wasnât sure even she would be able to save it.Â
That had been before she stopped replying to his mentions of it.
Yet, Dick found the silence growing too long, he worried that it would reach a point that he wouldnât be able to backtrack from, he didnât have a choice but to talk. He swallowed, biting the inside of his cheek and finding he didnât know what to sayâbecause a part of Dick used to entirely believed that she would never leave himâno matter how precarious their relationship became, no matter how many times that Dick had called for a raincheck half an hour after he was supposed to be somewhere so Dick had never had to think of an apology, often these instances passed in silence: another tally added.Â
That was before their last fight. Now Dick found himself struggling to think of words to sayâhaving to picture someone else in her place to choke the words out.
âI didnât know that you felt that way.âÂ
She furrowed her brows, Dick wondered if she had been expecting him to have more to say. Dick wondered what there was to say. He felt relief when she allowed her body to relax, letting out a sigh as she did so. âWell, in your defense I never told you.â
He nodded.
âI wouldnât mind you living with me, maybe?â She half-heartedly extended her arms to show her apartment before slipping them into the pockets of her pajamas. âEven though one of my closets is exclusively for rugs, I could think about working in some room for you.â A half smile. Dick wanted to return it, but he couldnât find himself able to as he continued to think about what else she wasnât talking to him about. Was that wrong to think? How many more topics would he need to pry from her? Dick stared at his feet, he watched as another pair of feet walked up her feet pausing just inches before his own. Dick watched as she reached forward, hands gently cupping his.Â
Yet even then, he felt a barrier between them. She wasnât giving herself to him fully, he hadnât even realized how much he would ache for her all consuming puppy love until he no longer had it. Guilt descended on him, heavy and potent. Ashamedâhis audacity: to want all of her when Dick could not give the same.Â
âDo you understand how I feel?â She gently questioned, squeezing his hand while feeling ashamed.Â
This was their new dance now.
âYouâre the only man Iâve ever datedââ She began to rub circles on his hand as Dick leaned down slightly to rest his head against hers â--Yet Iâve lost count of the amount of women youâve told me about, or that Iâve met. Is it wrong to not want to walk in their steps?â
Dick shook his head. âAre you still staying the night?â She had asked so quietly that if he hadnât been so close to her he wouldnât have heard it.Â
He furrowed his brow âWhy wouldnât I?â
âI donât know, maybe youâre mad at me?â An awkward chuckle
Dick stood to his full height, looking down at her as she toyed with the end of her sleeve.
He thought about it for a moment, before ruffling her hair âWhy would I be mad at you?â asked Dick as she tried to push his heavy arm away.
***
Often she told herself that this was it. She was never going to talk to Dick Grayson, ever again. This time was itâher last straw, but so had the ten times before and each time, she had promised that she would leave, would phase Dick Grayson out of her life and yet found herself running a hand along a sculpted jaw, watching him as he slept just inches away from her.Â
Her new, most recent plan was unfurling infront of her.
She would cut communication, that was the first step and one of the easiest. She found that Dick didnât often initiate communication unless they had argued and he was racked with guilt.
Second, she would move. That part left her anxious, but she would figure it outâshe always had. She would keep boxes from her packages, random boxes from her jobs. She would apartment hunt; aware of there being no where Dick couldnât find her, but hoping that he would catch the hint.Â
She had never been able to commit to a plan before thisâshe found each time she tried, Dick did something that gave her the illusion that change had occurred, only for him to fall back into old habits. She did find that with each plan she grew less forgiving, more irritated, until it culminated in their most recent blow-out where she had been struck with the paralyzing fear that this truly was itâthe end she had wanted but found left her desperately empty. Who was she without Dick? She existed for him. She existed to ache for his approval, for her to be the one that he ran to when he was hurt.
Could she live without Dick? Could the planets live without Gravity? The Earth without a sun? She gravitated around him and felt continuously pathetic for it. To lose herself within a man when she should have been losing herself within work.Â
For her, there had never been anyone but Dick Grayson.Â
She twirled in front of the floor length mirror. As she approached her mid twenties, the signs of age had begun to appear. She didnât have a rigorous training routine, or alien genetics. She found herself searching for imperfectionsâanything that explained to her why Dick searched outside of her; ways to explain how Dick had let her down as a fault of hers, rather than his own inadequacies.Â
She ended up disappointed in herself, the version of her that desperately sought the flaws of other women to build herself up was a version of her that Dick brought out, a version that she wanted to beat with a stick. Vapid, selfish for a man who pissed her off and didnât respect her, let alone love her.Â
âThis will be the last time.â A whisper when she wanted to scream. At the end of the day, she wasnât sure she had the confidence to screamâto force this future into existence.Â
***
âWhatcha doing?â She jumped straight up at the sound of Dickâs voice, frantically shoving her shirt down and in a failed bid to conceal herself, dropped to the ground next to the bed as she did so.Â
âHuh?â Dickâs rushed over to her, looking down as she was awkwardly laying on the floor. She hadnât wanted to immediately get up, despite her stomach being covered now âI was checking if a bug bit me.â She blurted out, immediately standing as Dick was beginning to kneel down beside herâ she didnât want to be close to him.
Dick would wear her down, lower her guards. She needed to create distance between them, otherwise she would fall back into the trap of chasing after an elusive love, that blind devotion she had previously thought of as her strength.Â
She stretched, yawning and then flopping face down on her bed to hide her embarrassmentâby being more embarrassing, apparently.
âWhatcha doing here?â Her muffled voice came, why was he here? It was the middle of the day and wasnât she supposed to phase him out of her life? She took his key, for fucks sake.Â
Yet here he was, disrupting her plans and causing her heart to flutter. Maybe he did love her, maybe Dick was checking on her âcause she hadnât talked to him in a while, she felt giddy at the thought he was worried about her.
Then came the self-loathing. The two were hand-in-hand.Â
She felt the bed sink as Dick sat down beside her, then turned to lean half his weight onto her back âAm I not allowed to surprise my love?â He asked, using a free hand to turn her face to his. They were so close, she could see the details of his blue eyes and noted there was a small splotch of brown near his pupil in the right one. She hadnât noticed it before, or maybe she had. It was easy to forget small, close up details when you spent more time distant and avoidant. Love was made of small details which led to her thinking: why did she love him?
Dick was all she knew. In her senior year of High School, she had come to the horrific conclusion that if she hadnât found anyone by then, she would die alone as how else could she meet someone other than the forced proximity of a classroom?
She had been in college when she met Dick, depressed by the lack of challenge that her campus gave her and feeling eternally bored. He had just been visiting the school and as she thought back to it, likely doing something related to his vigilante activities.Â
She couldnât remember their first words; the memories of their first meeting hazy with time and blurred with years of disappointment that left her disconnected with that version of her who had been elated she wouldnât die alone. She preferred that now, compared to the years-long deceit she had found herself in. The bear trap enclosed around her head.Â
Dick was handsome, talkative. Those were traits that had drawn her initially, but far from what kept her. He had a hot-temper, a protective nature and was relatively easy-going with his occasional bouts of intense sincerity. Barbara likely saw that more than her, who saw the side of Dick that was unreliable, distant and toeing the line of infidelity.Â
She thought back to a conversation with her coworker. At the time, it had upset herâtheir relationship was still fresh, the stars in her eyes hadnât burned out. Now, she understood what they had meant when they called Dick âran thruâ.
That might have been the start, the first fracture in the imaginary life she had pictured.Â
She cringed at her own thoughts âWhatâs with that face?â Dick asked, she propped herself up to break the closeness between them.

The Hill was somehow one of the less safe neighborhoods, but the only one that she wasn't worried about getting mugged in. Maybe it was the community--tightly bound and against the impending gentrification that was determined to have modern houses, boujee thrift stores and expensive, bad tasting coffee shops with hostile architecture.Â
She had to pass through to get the lot where she was pretty sure Jason was. Her memory was hazy, she hadnât even really been able to remember where the lot wasâonly knew how to get there based off itâs proximity to the grocery store she had visited to thank Jason for letting her sleep on the couch, rather than leave her to the self-destructive tendencies she had begun to lean more into.
she had been slightly nervous about the barbed wire, the minimum forty no trespassing signs and the fact that the lot looked abandoned and decrepit to the point she was kinda nervous that it was the wrong criminally owned lot.
âOpen up.â She called, banging on the first container she walked up to. Nothing, okay. She moved on to the next, until she had gone through five and was beginning to worry that this really was the wrong criminally owned lot, but no one had come out with guns pointed at her yet. That was a good sign.Â
When she made it to the middle and knocked on the double wide, double stacked shipping container that looked identical to the ones surrounding it, she hadn't been expecting a reply-- It looked the same as every other one and she doubted the layout was too different.Â
The main difference was the occupant--apparently. Jason Todd only halfway opened the door with a scowl "How did you know where I lived?"
His question was ignored, her excitement at having been able to remember where Jason had lived overriding his bad attitude. Â
âYou owe me a favor.â She cleared her throat, attempting to maintain a serious tone despite the undeniable excitement. If she was sitting, she would be kicking her feet. Jason didnât open the door entirely, but even half-cracked open she could see enough: Jason was sweaty, wearing only sweatpants that hung loosely around his hips which gave her a full view of his taunt torso, defined v-line and happy trail that made her quickly raise her focusâforcing it onto his head of wild hair, never combed and she found herself thinking that the white streak was cute--a little slut strand. She giggled to herself, but then came the remembrance of where it had been from and she coughed into her hand.Â
âWhat?â He asked, his gaze trailing from her feet to her head. âYou look sick.â Jason added and she pushed past him, wrinkling her nose in disgust when her hand fell to her side slightly slick with his sweat. She shook her hand as she cotninued into the plain, bare-bones safe house. It looked out of architectural digest, but not in the tasteful, stylish way: the sterile and basic as if it wasnât lived in at all. Exactly like it had been the last time she was there.Â
âDid I invite you in?â He asked, grabbing onto the hem of her shirt and pulled her back towards him, slightly choking her. She simply slipped out of her shirt and kept walking until she was sitting on his couch, in nothing but her sports bra and pants.
Her shirt came rocketing towards her a minute after, landing directly on her face and falling into her lap, she shimmied the shirt back on just in time for Jason to walk in and stand in front of the couch with a scowl âWhat do you want?â He asked.
Her attempt at nonchalance had her looking more guilty than anything as she leaned tried to sink into the couch and tried even harder to appear comfortableâthe couch was as hard as fucking rocks.Â
âDo you remember how I didn't snitch to Dick that you were back in Gotham and killing people? you know, with a crowbar?â She asked, tilting her head.
Jason tensed immediately âyouââÂ
âWhatever youâre going to argue with me about, is irrelevant.â She was extra insufferable then, raising a hand to silence Jason. âMoving on, listen, itâs time to pay me back. I lied to Dick for you, and now itâs time you lied to Dick for me.â
âYou didnât lie for meââÂ
She shook her head, deciding once again that whatever Jason said next wasnât worth hearing
âI didnât tell Dick, which is basically the same as lying.âÂ
Jason leaned forward, flicking her forehead with enough force that she yelped, jumping back and pulling her feet up âYou beat a man to death with a crowbar in front of me! Hearing me out is the least that you can do.âÂ
Jason sat on the opposite end of the couch, scowling. He didn't think she deserved eye contact with blackmailing him.Â
âA crowbar is no different than what Nightwing uses.â Jason watched as she rubbed her forehead, a red mark already forming âNightwing doesnât kill people.â He shrugged âI canât imagine that being hit with batons is better than a crowbar.âÂ
"Those are escrima sticks." She stated and Jason opened his mouth to reply but she waved him off. Literally, waved him off. Jason was in shock as the light in her eyes grew brighter, âIrrelevant. Why donât we test that?â She leaned closer to him
âA little compare and contrast?â Jason leaned back, waving his hand between them to shoo her away âGet to the point.â Jason disliked their close proximity.Â
At any point, he could lean closer and Jason hated that a part of him did want to close the distance between them. He wondered if she still smelt like coffee from what he learned was a part time coffee-roaster job, since her archivist job didnât pay nearly enough to live and have a savings account.Â
The plan was simple, she explained âI need to disappear.â When Jason had opened his mouth to ask why, she hadnât given him the time to talk before âYou canât know why, but what you can do is help me empty my apartment in a day AND let me sleep on your couch AND lie to Dick if he asks, which I donât think he will.â
âI donât want to get caught in thisââ Jason gestured âlovers spat.âÂ
âItâs not a loverâs spat. Iâm quiet-quitting my relationship with him.â Jason staredâshe had said the dumbest thing he had heard yet. âYou canât just.."
âNo, I canât just break up with him.âÂ
Jason leaned into the couch and put his shoulders over his eyes âFine, this weekend.â
Thinking about Benjamin Poindexter who doesn't get your need for some alone time.
When the words came out of your mouth, he looked at you as if you had just said that you kick puppies for fun.
"Why would you say that?"
You sigh, knowing all too well the look on Dex's face â the glassy eyes, the furrowed eyebrows, the pouty lips.
"Just for tonight, Dex. You could go to the movies or something, and then sleep at your place."
The thing is, your offer is genuine. All you want is a quiet evening where you get to take a nice, long shower, eat a good meal while watching 'the office', do some yoga, and fall asleep in your freshly washed sheets.
And it's not like you couldn't do those things with him in your apartment, but ever since the two of you started dating, it feels like you were never truly alone.
If you have to drink some water in the middle of the night, he'll be there right behind you; if you have to go to the bathroom, he'll sit on the edge of the bathtub, waiting for you to be done; if you want to go buy some groceries, he'll be already with his shoes on, waiting for you at the door.
So, no, it doesn't seem unreasonable to you to want some alone time.
But to Dex? You just declared your desire to leave him.
"Why do you want me to go? Did I do something wrong?"
His lips are trembling, and his mind his clouded by the worst scenarios possible. But you've already played this game before, and you will not back down.
"No, baby," you coo, "I just think it would be good for us to spend some alone time, that's all."
Those words again. Alone time.
Dex doesn't understand why you need that so badly. He wants to spend every waking moment â or maybe every moment â with you. Don't you want the same?
"Baby, please, I won't bother you. You won't even know I'm here. Just, please, don't make me leave."
You highly doubt that. Even when he's not talking, or in your proximity, his gaze has a way of making your skin burn, never letting you forget you're not alone.
"It would be good for the both of us," you try to reason with him, but he won't have it.
"Don't you love me anymore?"
The statement takes you off guard, and the dramatics of it all almost make you laugh. But Dex is dead serious.
He takes a step closer to you, lowering himself onto his knees. His strong arms wrap themselves around your legs, and his head rests on your stomach.
"Please, baby, don't make me leave. I- I can't sleep without you," he pleads. "I love you so much, I can't be away from you."
The tears that had been gathering in his eyes start running down his flustered cheeks. He's breathing heavily, and despite knowing deep down that he's trying to manipulate you, you can't help but be concerned for him.
You had seen him crying and begging before, but this time he looks genuinely distressed at the thought of you wanting to be away from him.
Because that's how your request registered in his head: you want to leave him.
A sigh escapes your lips as you cradle his face, trying to whipe away some of his tears. You don't want to give in, but at this point you doubt he'll even get off his knees until you agree to let him stay.
And so you do.
You expect him to be relieved. Instead, he becomes extra clingy for the rest of the night, constantly following you around and making sure he's always touching you some way, and tightly wrapping his arms around you as you sleep.
You made him face his worst fear tonight â you leaving him, that is â and he'll make sure that never happens.
A/N: He's so dramatic and pathetic. I love him. In real life this sounds like a nightmare situation.

cw -Â stalking, depression, dex steals your clothes.
dex who notices youâre depressed before anyone else.
itâs easy to when heâs inserted himself into your life like an all seeing eye. watching from the rooftop across from your apartment. dex thinks at first that youâre just having a rough couple of days, then a funk, but soon he realizes how it doesnât go away. it creeps into your life slowly. he watches it overtake your life.
it wears you down and you seem to fight less and less to the feeling.
late nights that you canât sleep. mornings where leaving the bed seems like a monumental task. you move slower. dragging your feet and raising your arms slowly as if a weighted blanket had been thrown over you. you shower less, your hair tangles as dry shampoo cakes in it, your outfits go unplanned as you instead grab the laundry that smells the least.
you used to cook meals for yourself. joyfully dancing around your kitchen as you cooked but now takeout boxes seem to be piling up. if you eat, that is, because meals seem to be more scarce than before.
dex would know because heâd been synching the times he ate with yours, so when he finally involved himself in your life, heâd fit in as perfect as possible.
he sees how tasks take longer for you to complete. you get less done at work. it stresses you more. chatting with your co-worker over coffee becomes less of an event than it was before. turning into a few minutes of small talk that you seem to be barley able to smile through. thereâs no pep in your step as you walk through the office.
at home it isnât any better. dex watches as your apartment turns into a visual representation of your mind. a few dishes turn into a stack that molds. laundry overtakes the hamper and becomes an endless pile in the corner of the room that eventually falls. you donât pick it up. the dust on your shitty tile floors is so apparent that even he can see it through his lens. nothing is in itâs right place.
the part that hurts him the most is how your smile fades. you put on one in front of others. your friends, your co-workers, and the cashiers or employees you interact with. dex sees how you really feel though. how quickly it drops when the person stops looking. how you look empty, staring off at things as if your trapped inside your head.
you canât hide your true feelings from him. not as he watches over you. studies you. heâd never let you lie to him like that.
dex feels sick as he watches the light inside of you flicker away. almost a year he had spent following you like a lighthouse calling out to a sailor. but itâs growing duller day by day. at first, he was angry in a way. at you or maybe at the situation, he wasnât sure which. he was confused too. how someone as full of life and goodness and sincerity and perfection, could ever struggle so much.
he settled on feeling in pain. aching alongside you.
at the fact that he knows exactly how you feel. he had spent so much of his life feeling the same way. like a dark cloud was hanging over him. like static noise played inside his head 24/7. weeks, months, and even years of his life that seemed to fade into nothingness due to the poison that swam around his head. no direction, no purpose. he had always found it in others - dr. mercer, julie, and now you.
but your light was dimming and he knows that he canât watch you die out.
clearly the people in your life, the so-called friends who you seem to hangout with less these days, arenât doing a proper job of taking care of you. maybe they just arenât as attentive and keen as he is. regardless, dex canât handle the helpless and panicked feeling he gets as he watches your condition worsen. before he knows it, heâs convinced himself that itâs time to take things into his own hands.
he decides to start with your apartment.
a better space will give you the room to begin feeling better. plus, it bothers him. dex prefers things neat and orderly. he likes knowing that everything had a place. it kept his head clear, and he hopes itâll do the same for you.
dex tells himself that it doesnât count as breaking and entering. this was for you, to help you, to ease the weight off your shoulders. he starts as soon as you leave for work. dex is a quick cleaner even in your overwhelming apartment. he wishes he had done it sooner.
when you come home that evening, your apartment is spotless. it would be unnerving, well it is, if it wasnât for how good it makes you feel.
for the first time in months, every dish in your place was washed, dried, and put into itâs designated spot. the inside of your fridge has had all the very, very old food removed and replaced with meal prepped dinners. any and every surface glimmers under the lights from how wiped clear itâs been. the bathroom completely cleaned too, including all the hair out of the shower.
even mount laundry had been dealt with then neatly folded and put up. dex is glad to see that you donât seem to notice some peices missing from your closet.
you get an email later from your apartment management saying that they had let cleaners into some of the apartments. something about free promotional work. weirdly, none of your neighbors seem to know what your talking about when you mention it later that week. you tell yourself that they must had not been chosen.
dex watches your confused but happy look when you first come home. smiling with pride that he had helped you in some way. he thinks it helps, you seem a bit lighter even if it doesnât last much too long.
but thatâs okay.
because this had proved to him that inserting himself into your life would be good for you. he was prepared. he had studied you enough. so much so that he was able to realize how under water you were getting. he could slip into your life and fit perfectly. at least he would once he got you back to normal.
now dex knows that he just needs to go further.
a stranger at your favorite coffee shop. he offers to pay for your coffee. itâs something small that makes your day a littl easier. it helps that he had a pretty face to go along with it. heâs there the next time you go in and the time after that. him buying your coffee turns into small talk that turn into you offering to sit with him. you donât really want to talk, and dex knows that, but he also knew that youâd feel like you owed to him.
you were so kind like that. itâs all he needs.
dex had practiced this. practiced the questions, the conversations, and the facial expressions heâd need. staring into the mirror for hours as he went through the different possibilities. he wouldnât let himself get caught off guard like he did with julie. this was too important. because to dex, this wasnât just about getting into your life. it was about saving you.
he tells you his name is tony. gives you a soft smile. he asks you inviting, non-threatening questions at first. youâll become more comfortable with him. youâre easy to talk to. heâs seems like he is too, itâs easy to when heâs assimilated all your interests into his life.
then heâll tilt his head. narrow his eyes in a way that is kind and not threatening. heâll ask you softly âyou know, this might be weird for me to say, but i used to work a hotline call center. you just⌠you seem like maybe youâre going through a hard time. are you?â
itâs going so well.
you let him in. youâre too trusting like that, dex knows thatâs something the two of you will need to work on. something for later. you admit to him that youâve been struggling. you havenât told anyone but, then again, no one but he had asked.
dex reaches out to you and you let him.
dex canât stop his smile from widening when he touches your hand. he has to work hard not to let his thoughts drift away from the excitement of touching you for the first time. it feels surreal. dex, or rather tony, gently holds your hand.
âitâs okay. we all go through hard times,â he had remembered that line from the script they used at the hotline call center, âi can be there for you. if youâll let me.â
you smile at him. a real smile. dex could tell it from rooftops away.
and just like that, another troubling thing had crawled itâs way into your life. this one capable of being even more suffocating and possessive than the other. on the bright side, dex was positive that his willpower would be stronger than anything troubling your head. heâd chase it away.
because to dex, the only darkness that deserved to bathe in your pool of light was himself.

âWho was that?â Dex closes the bedroom door behind him with a click. The sound cuts through the silence of your shared apartment, except for your frantic breathing and the shuffling sound in the closet.
âNo one.â You say quickly, pressing your back against the closet doors, handles biting into your skin through the thin fabric, but it feels like nothing compared to the pounding heart beneath your ribs.
You didnât expect Dex to come home this early. He said he had to run an errand two towns over. And by ârunning errands,â it could vary from raiding an AVTF base to whatever the hell Mr. Charles assigned him to. You never know. The moment you heard the lock turn, you practically shoved the mysterious someone inside that cramped space.
Straightening up, you push off from the wood to block his view. The familiar scent of soap and rain clinging to his suit envelops you. âYouâre home early. Howâs-â
âBaby. Who was that?â Dex cuts you off mid-sentence, his voice low, bordering on threatening instead of affectionate. His gaze stays fixed on the creaking doors, arms crossed over his broad chest. âDid you invite someone over?â
âNo,â you snort, though it sounds like youâre bluffing. âDonât be silly, sweetie. Câmere. Let me help you get out of these.â
Your hands extend to his gear straps, but stop short when he pulls back, his head cocking to the side, eyes piercing into yours. âDonât change the subject.â
Heâs done with asking questions. And like a judge reading out the verdict, his voice drops to just above a whisper. âTell me, who are you hiding?â
The rustling sound doesnât stop, which only complicates the situation. You silently curse at yourself and the one on the other side of the doors. Before another excuse leaves your lips, Dex sidesteps around you and strides briskly towards the closet. His fingers brush the knife secured to the harness across his chest as his eyes sweep the room for anything else he could use to eliminate the threat. But letâs be honest, anything could be a weapon between those calloused fingers.
âOoof!â
Time seems to freeze after he yanks the door open, realization slowly dawning over him.
The puppy swings his tail from left to right, tongue hanging out, floppy ears jiggling with the movements. He looks up at Dex with wide, bright eyes, like the man hung the moon.
You huff a small, awkward laugh. âSurprise!â The fluff ball chimes in with another joyful bark.
âThis is who- what youâre hiding? Jesus- I thought-â
âSorry, baby. I didnât know how to tell you,â you explain, kneeling on the floor when the fluffy little thing waddles towards you, mud dragging along his path. âI found him on the street. It was raining hard, and there was no one around. He looked so sad, Dex. I couldnât leave him there.â
As you scratch underneath his floppy ear, your voice shoots up three octaves. Baby talk activated. âYeah, you like that, donât cha? You like that, huh? Whoâs my good boy? Yeah, you are. Youâre my good boy.â
The sight of you beaming and the little dirt ball nuzzling into your hand drains all the fight out of Dex. He stares at the messy trail like a stubborn stain that refuses to fade after the third wash on his favorite shirt, the corner of his mouth twitches.
Then the whelp yaps again, pulling Dex back into reality. âNo.â
âWhat do you mean no?â You scoop the cotton ball into your arms, muddy paws and all.
âIt canât stay.â
âWhy not?â
âIt was living on the street. You donât know where itâs been.â
âOkay. Not anymore.â The little guy licks your cheek, agreeing with you. âAww. Look at him, Dex.â
âI am looking at it.â
âAnd?â
âIt appears to be a dog.â You blink at him. âAnd?â
âDogs are loud, sweetheart. They shed. They smell weird.â
You gasp softly, offended on the pupâs behalf, then tilt your head to whisper in his ear. âHe didnât mean it like that, cutie pie. Donât listen to him. Dexâs just being silly. Heâs so silly, donât he?â
Oblivious to the insults, the fuzzy ball gives another yip and licks your cheek again.
Dex can only sigh. He pinches the bridge of his nose, contemplating how this ten-pound bundle of wet fur and oversized paws is somehow gonna fit into his your squeaky-clean apartment without him going insane.
And thatâs how you end up in the bathroom at 11 pm, scrubbing brown smudges out of the sheets because someone let a stray baby roll around on the bed before Dex got home. According to your man, âthat's your accomplice.â
Oh, and the muddy potato? Heâs staying, obviously.
roy just sighed, a small smile on his lips despite himself as your lips kept covering his face with lipstick prints of your lips. he needed you to lie down, he needed to take care of youâ especially since you were drunk out of your mind after a girls night outÂ
once you gave him one last, big kiss on the tip of his nose with a âmwa!â, you leaned back and giggled with a big smile. âthere! all betterâÂ
his smile softened from the sight of youâ cheeks flushed from the booze, hair messy and lipstick everywhere but on your lips, the same lips that shone that same smile roy could stare at for hours.Â
ânow can you lay down?â his voice softened without realizing, but you just shook your head with a âuh uhâ and slid your arms around his neck to try pulling him into a kiss
it took everything in royâs power to lean away. âuh uh, babe. not when youâre drunkâ he gently took off your arms around his neck while you let out a whine. âroyyyyyyâ
ânopeâ he knelt down and slowly took off your heels. it made you huff but nevertheless, lie on the bed while roy was busy taking off your heels with those gentle, calloused hands of his that you lovedÂ
after taking the heels out and getting back up to see you doing what he asked, roy bit his bottom lip to hold his smile back from turning into a smirk. you looked so adorable, arms crossed and lips pouting because of his refusal of your kiss
âheyâ roy spoke quietly, slightly hovering over you to brush a strand from your face with the lightest touch. âiâll give you as many as you wantâ
your eyes perked up and a dazed smile formed back on your lips immediately. âreally?â
âtomorrow, when youâre soberâ
ââŚnot fairâ
he placed a kiss on your forehead. âthatâs my girlâ
little did roy know, youâd hold onto his promise even after the booze left your system. cue the pecks of kisses he woke up to in the morning
(a/n: first time writing for roy (esp since everyone had been asking me for so long), kinda nervous cause i feel like this is ooc ugh i had another plot in mind but i backed out and got too scared LOL)
âËŕż In which you convince Jason to try different tea blends
Pairing: Jason Todd x fem!reader
Word count | 1.2k
Tags: fluff, tea parties, slice of life
Jason Todd was a beer guy. He enjoyed nothing more than feeling the cold, bitter liquid slide down his throat after a particularly long mission.
Meanwhile, you thought liking beer was some sort of inside joke you werenât privy to. Every time you opened the fridge to see bottles of it, you shuddered in disgust.
Jason joked it was because you were sweet and full of life, too busy slicing lemons for a simple basil lemonade to stomach natureâs harder flavors.
You had just looked at him like heâd told you having two drawers filled with herbs was dumb.
Ever since then, youâd made it your personal mission to convert him into a tea loverânot the occasional black tea heâd have at the manor with Alfred, but something more herbal.
Something that could soothe your bones, or heal a restless night with a steaming cup.
It wasnât that you were annoyed with him over it. If anything, you didnât mind that he drank beer (unless he was kissing you).
You just wanted to share a bit of what you loved, the same way heâd hand you a book with little notes already scribbled in when you were sad.
Plus, the man acted like he didnât know what ârelaxâ meant.
So when Jason complained about a nightmare one night, you took to the kitchen. The aroma slid through the apartment, making Jason peek out from the bedroom in curiosity.
âPrincess?â he grumbled, walking toward you.
âOne second, almost done,â you answered while carefully straining the tea into a mug.
His arm wrapped around your waist on instinct. He was wearing an old shirt and boxers, his hair tousled from all the tossing and turning.
He leaned down to peer into the cup, his hair tickling your cheek.
âWhatâs in it?â Jason knew nothing about teaâonly bits and pieces from when you rambled about the newest concoction youâd tested out.
âChamomile, and a bit of mint.â You blew on the liquid before handing it to him.
âItâs hot,â you warned.
He held it with both hands and hesitantly took a sip, ignoring the swirling steam. He hissed as his face screwed up.
âDid you not just hear what I fucking said?â you muttered, exasperated.
He shot you a glare and blew on the tea for a while. You watched in amusement, shuffling closer until your head rested on his shoulder.
âIt tastes like flavored water,â he said.
âYouâre just uncultured. Alfred loves my blends.â
âYeah, the old manâs the only one who does," he replied
âDamian does too.â
âDoesnât count. Heâs half demon," he reasoned.
You snorted, and he chugged all of it in one sip. You wiped the stray liquid that trickled down his chin.
He grimaced like he'd bitten into a lemon.
âSure this shit ainât poisoned?â he asked, squinting at the cup like it might hold all the answers.
You rolled your eyes. âIf it was, youâd already be dead.â
You took his hand and tugged him back into the bedroom.
Later that night, when you felt his armâheavier than usualâaround you, and his breaths that smelled like cinnamon and apples, you knew for once he was deep in a dreamless sleep.
The next time he drank your tea was when he was stressed about a case. He paced back and forth in the living room while you lay cocooned in a blanket on the couch, watching a random sitcom.
A warm teacup sat on the coffee table, begging for its ownerâs boyfriend to drink it so heâd stop radiating anxiety.
âIf I miss something again, someone could get hurt,â he muttered when you told him to take a break.
âJay, a clear mind would be more helpful than one thatâs spiraling.â You gestured him over, and he listened. He sat next to you, the blanket brushing against him as he held your hand to ground himself.
âI think you need this sun elixir more than me right now.â You handed him your teacup gently.
âIt has passionflower, lemon balm, and some honey,â you added when he just stared at it.
âSun elixir?â His lips twitched, amused by how you always named your tea blends.
It was never, Iâm drinking hibiscus tea. Always, Iâm drinking fairy bloodâbecause youâd gone all out and added edible gold glitter into the pink liquid.
You nodded and kissed his cheek, watching as his forehead smoothed.
He sighed. âIt better not taste like last time,â he said before taking a sip. This time it didnât scald his tongue, and it had a sweeter flavor.
You gave him a knowing grin.
Jason leaned back into the couch, pulling you closer so your body curled against his. You tugged the blanket to cover him as well.
âIâll take the damn break,â he grumbled, but you noticed how his mouth relaxed from its scowl and how his fingers played with the rings on your hand while he took small sips of the sun elixir.
The third time was when the two of you were looking after Lian for a day. The little girl had insisted on a tea party after spotting your wide teacup collection.
Her eyes shone with so much joy at the sight of them that even Jason couldnât say no. He reluctantly wore the tiara Lian placed on his head, claiming he had to be in character.
You slyly snapped a few pictures and sent them to Roy, who immediately blew up your phone with messages.
The three of you were on a picnic blanket outside. You had brewed some iced peach tea, since it was too hot for warm beverages, and on the decorative plates laid cucumber sandwiches.
Lian drank her peach tea with her pinky up from a sparkly pink cup, and Jason did his best to look half as elegant with his own Batman teacup.
âFuck this shit,â Jason muttered when the cup almost slipped from his too-big hand.
Lian didnât bat an eye, just shared a look of incredulity with you.
You took the cup from Jason, whose frown deepened when your smaller fingers easily held it.
âYouâve lost your tea privileges,â you told him, face serious even though you wanted to laugh.
Jason rolled his eyes. âItâs a goddamn tea partyââ
âLanguage,â Lian corrected primly.
âItâs a very exclusive tea party,â you replied, sipping your boyfriendâs tea. The liquid tasted sweet and minty against your tongue.
âBullshiââ
âDaddy said no cursing,â Lian added helpfully again. You hid your grin behind the cup.
Jason breathed in slowly, hand out like he was about to tackle you for it.
âBaby, just gimme my tea back,â he whined, lips forming a pout that sent Lian into a fit of giggles.
âSo you do like my tea!â you exclaimed.
âItâs my tea!â he shot back.
âAdmit you like it,â you said, holding the cup to your lips, threatening to drink more.
âOkay, Jesus, slow downâI like it.â His words came out, panicked, and you grinned victoriously.
âI like it too! Can I have more?â Lian asked, and you graciously poured more into her cup from the kettle.
âSee? that wasnât so hard,â you told jason as you put the kettle down. The wind ruffled his hair, while he tried to keep the tiara from falling.
You laughed at the sight of a big burly man struggling with tea party extravagances.
When his eyes met yours in a playful glare, you knew it was deeper than a tea mission, it was lines being crossed, parts of you and him starting to blur into one another.
And maybe that was your favorite tea blend of all.

could i request a short blurb of some domestic/loverboy dex perhaps 𫪠i totally see him as the type to lay his entire body on top of reader while sheâs reading on the couch and he eventually falls asleep to the sound of her voice narrating her book while also combing thru his hair hehee
Dex is Very Clingy and Youâre Enabling Him
TW separation anxiety, possessive undertones, mentions of violence and protectiveness but mostly just fluff!
word count : 1.1k (this is blurb size to me ok. Maybe I should rename it to short stories?)
Domestic/Loverboy!Dex is still Dex. Heâs the kind of man who pretends heâs normal about affection but really, the best I can do to describe him is that heâs just a cat with separation anxiety.Â
And the thing is, when you first started dating, you genuinely didnât realise how clingy he was going to be.
Obviously, you knew he was intense. You werenât stupid. You knew Benjamin Poindexter didnât do anything halfway. But still.
Still.
What were you supposed to do? No one would believe you.
You could tell someone, âBullseye fell asleep on top of me last night while I read aloud to him and played with his hair,â and they would look at you like you had just claimed you saw a goldfish file taxes.
Because Bullseye?
That Bullseye?
Bullseye, human weapon? That Bullseye was clingy? He followed you around the apartment like he had imprinted on you? He stood in the doorway when you brushed your teeth because apparently watching you do mundane things soothed him? He would pretend he was just âchecking somethingâ in the kitchen and then end up pressed against your back with his chin on your shoulder?
No one would believe it.
Still, Dexâs clingy affection wasnât casual. It wasnât sane. It was not, âHey, babe, can I sit next to you?â affection.
You would be sitting on the couch, reading your book, maybe tucked under a blanket, maybe with your knees pulled up, enjoying your quiet evening. And Dex would walk into the room, see you existing without him touching you, and immediately decide that was unacceptable.
Like, it was genuinely upsetting to him.
He would stand there for a second, staring at you.
You would look up from your book. âWhat?â
No answer. Dex would just look at you like you had abandoned him by sitting six feet away.
Then he would come over and climb on top of you.
And no, not cuddle, and not sit. What? Did you think he was gonna ease himself into your space like a normal boyfriend?
He would collapse, full body, dead weight. His face would press into your chest, arms around your middle, one leg thrown over yours like he was trying to physically prevent you from ever leaving the couch again.
âDex,â youâd say, already sighing.
He would make a tiny noise into your shirt.
âYouâre crushing me,â you said, but really, you were fine. You got used to this weighted blanket routine long ago.
He made another sound, even louder this time.
Dex knew. He was too aware of his own body not to know exactly how much of his weight he had draped over you. He just didnât care, because this was where he wanted to be, and therefore this was where he belonged now.
He was so cat-coded, and not a cute little kitten cat-coded either. He was a big, feral, half-socialised alley cat who would hiss at everyone else and then crawl into your lap like a spoiled baby the second no one was looking.
Still, you secretly loved it so much it made you stupid.
You would never tell him that, obviously. God forbid. You had to keep some dignity.
So youâd complain the whole time.
âYouâre so needy.â
Heâd tighten his arms around you.
âYou know that, right?â
Dex would just burrow closer, like he was trying to get under your skin, into your lungs, somewhere where nobody could take him away from you.
And then, like muscle memory, your fingers would find his hair. The second you started combing through it, Dex was gone.
His shoulders would loosen. His grip would turn less desperate and more sleepy. His breathing would slow down. He would go heavy and boneless in the way that made your heart do flips in your chest.
This was the same man who could hit a target without looking. The same man who could clear a room and barely blink. The same man who looked at most people like they were either threats, obstacles, or background noise.
The second you start scratching gently at his scalp, he would melt into you like he had been waiting all day for permission to stop being a person.
He wouldnât purr, because he was a grown man. But he would make a sound very close to one. It's like a little hum in the back of his throat. It. Was. So. Fucking Cute.Â
So youâd do it again and again and again.
And if you stopped, he would notice.
Oh, heâd notice.Â
His head would lift up just enough for one eye to open, giving you this judgmental little look full of betrayal. Like, excuse me? Why did the hand stop? Who authorised that?
So youâd go back to combing through his hair, because you were weak to his little antics and he knew it.
Then youâd start reading your book aloud.
He didnât even ask you to, but he would just get quieter when you did it. Heâd pepper kisses on your chest and your neck because he loved hearing your breath hitch as you tried to say a long word. His grip would loosen, then tighten again, like he was trying to hold onto your voice as much as your body.
You could be reading absolute nonsense and he would listen like it was sacred.
It didnât matter what the book was. Romance, horror, some old paperback you bought secondhand, a paragraph describing curtains for way too long, eventually, Dex would fall asleep to it anyway.
So no, Dex didnât love halfway. When Dex loved you, it was with his whole obsessive, desperately loyal heart. And yes, if he were actually a cat, he would absolutely scratch the shit out of anyone who looked at you wrong.
Someone made you uncomfortable? Claws.
Someone spoke to you too sweetly? Claws.
Someone tried to take your attention away from him? Eat fucking claws, dipshit.
So yeah, you could be reading the most boring paragraph in the world and Dex would still fall asleep like it was a lullaby, because it was your voice. Because you were there. Because nobody was taking him away from his sacred couch time.Â
And youâd keep reading even when he started snoring his cute little snores, one hand holding the book, the other buried in his hair, pretending not to notice the way he nuzzled closer, even in his sleep.Â
Your clingy, surprisingly domestic, loverboy boyfriend.
Your murderous little rescue cat.
Fast asleep on top of you like he had finally found the one place in the world where he didnât have to bare his claws.

Note: I see all your blurb requests from this post, and keep them coming!! I will try my best to write most of them over the next few days but I might pass on a couple simply because Iâm blanking on them đ the Buck Star Wars AU will be pushed back but hopefully Iâll get it up by the end of the week đŤś
How about a short story where Adrian teaches us to play Dungeons & Dragons, even though we don't really get it? đ
(I think heâd be incredibly patient with us, because if we learned, weâd play with him more often.) đ§ââď¸
Congratulations again!! đđŤ°
@danversxwasabi, as always, i love your brain.
(full disclosure, i've never played D&D - despite the energy i've been told multiple times I give off đ literally a week ago at work a student worker of mine told me that they were surprised I've never played because I have, and I quote, "the energy of someone who should be on Dropout" lmfaoooo)

notes: as mentioned above, I've never played D&D in my life - my understanding, like reader, is extraordinarily basic, so I apologize if I royally fucked anything up here. I read a whole ass powerpoint to try and get a little more understanding before diving into this, but my frame of reference is entirely this amazing video, listening to friends who play talk, and clips of Dimension 20. also, title is from the song "get the balance right" by depeche mode.
âAnd I have to do math?â
Adrianâs eyes drifted up towards the ceiling, his brow scrunching.
â...sort of.âÂ
Your head landed against the table with a soft thud.
âAde, Iâm never going to get any of this!â you exclaimed, though the punch of your desperation was somewhat swallowed by the table.Â
âNo, I promise you can get this,â Adrian insisted again. You were pretty sure you had a D20 digging into your cheekbone. âTalk me through everything you remember.â
Propping your chin on your arms you sighed. âThereâs a DM.â
âYes.â
âAnd thereâs dice.â
âAlso true.â
âAnd some of the dice is weird.â
âSubjective, but sure.â
âEveryone at the table is role playing inside the confines of the world the DM builtâŚandâŚthere areâŚclasses that the characters are fromâŚand we justâŚsort of make it up as we go along?âÂ
You rubbed at the space between your brows as if that would draw the information to the front of your brain. Adrianâs eyes lit up slightly and he leaned forward in his seat, chin dipping in an emphatic nod. There was a slight shudder to his breathing pattern and it reminded you of the way he would get when you two were â
âYes, babe, thatâs so good! See! You totally know whatâs going on!â
âI feel like Iâve barely said anything?â you countered, frowning at your boyfriend.Â
âHow many classes are there?â Adrian asked, hands braced on his knees, leaning further forward on his motherâs couch. You became vaguely aware of the fact that your legs were asleep beneath the coffee table. How long had you two been at this?Â
âUmâŚfuck.â
He smiled gently at you. âThatâs okay, that was a tough one.â
â6?â you guessed weakly.
Adrian winced slightly, but kept up his remarkably good spirits. He was so excited about the game that you suspected it would take a lot to knock him down. â13.â
âSo where do the dice come in?â you asked for what you were almost certain was the fifth time.
âRolling dice is how you check to see if youâre able to perform a certain skill. Maybe Iâm playing a rogue, for example, and I want to use my totally sick persuasion skills to seduce someone for information andâŚâ Adrian started to explain before his gaze shifted slightly and he scoffed and your Adrian-tangent senses fiercely tingled. âFor the record, I know a lot of people think that bards are the seductive ones, but personally I think bards are a little overblown. Rogues can be cool too. Rogues can be seductive too.â
You nodded slowly. You definitely remembered that bards and rogues were two separate things. âTotallyâŚanyway, you wanna use some persuasion skills on me? We could totally bail on this whole thing right now, Mr. Rogue.â
âFirst of all, my rogueâs name is Lante and second of all, thatâs very hot of you, but Iâm going to need you to focus.â
You swallowed hard. âDamn, you really are serious about this.â
âIâm deeply serious about this,â he intoned, leaning still closer to you over the table. His knee knocked the coffee table and his minifigures went utterly akimbo and still he only looked at you, eyes gleaming. He was very very serious about this. Why was it kindaâŚhot? âBesides, think about how much extra time weâll get to spend together now that we have a campaign going!â
âWe already work together and basically live together, Ade,â you countered. In fact, you were only at his momâs place because she was out of town for the weekend. She had more space and Adrianâs life-long collection of all things D&D was already stored in the mid-century split-level. Sheâd actually seemed a little bummed to not be around for the game â something about reviving a 40th level cutpurse named Vera Nightshade?
Adrianâs face fell slightly. âIf you really donât want to playâŚâ
You grasped his hand over the detailed map spread across the table and pressed your fingers firmly into his skin. âI want to play. I just donât want to let you down.â
A smile tugged at his lips and then he pulled his hand away to pick up the toppled figures. âYou could never let me down.â He paused, his head tilting. âUnless you die at this first session.â
âI will do my best,â you said, lacking a certain confidence in your tone. Still, you raised your hand to your temple and saluted. âAny chance we can watch the video of Deborah Ann Woll explaining D&D to Jon Bernthal again?â
It was another bold-faced distraction attempt â you were pretty sure Adrian had gotten a little hard the first time you two watched that video together and not even because of the two objectively attractive people in it. The doorbell rang and a shiver of fear ran down your spine. Adrianâs D&D friends were going to be able to smell your imposter nature from a mile away. Theyâd take one look at you and deem you utterly unworthy of the campaign.
âNo time! Everyoneâs here!â Adrian cheered, clapping his hands together. He turned to get the door but pivoted back to you and pressed a kiss into your hair. âYou got this, my little cleric.â
Just as Adrian went to the door, your brain finally caught up. âWait a secondâŚLante is literally just the second half of Vigilante!â
As it turned out, Adrianâs âD&D friendsâ were just alsoâŚyour friends. From work. The original 11th Street Kids and tagalong you. Somehow, heâd conned each and every one of you separately, some kind of scheme that involved telling each of you he needed one more person to fill in at his table. Everyone else had been bribed in some way except for you, which, frankly, was kind of rude. Youâd be taking that up with your boyfriend later, but for now he was in Dungeon Master mode.
âReal clever, coming from a guy who named his character Christos Ironwrangler!â Economos yelled across the table at Chris. Heâd been annoyed since the moment he arrived and found out no one else had taken Adrianâs character backstory assignment seriously. 12 pages, still hot off the printer, sat discarded on the kitchen counter about his wizard.Â
âWhatever, youâre just jealous of my sick-ass paladin, dude,â Chris argued back, hands braced against the table. Youâd been a little surprised he hadnât gone straight for the obvious barbarian.
âI cannot stress enough again that weâre on the same team here,â Leota attempted, raising her voice over both of them. Harcourt took another swig of her beer and rolled the tiny figure meant to represent her fighter in between her fingers.Â
âClassic bard,â you chuckled to nobody but Adrian who was beaming from ear to ear. He waited until the chaos of the table had settled slightly and then leaned forward, wide green eyes taking in each member of the party in turn slowly. There was a delicious thrum of energy around the table. Suddenly, you were pretty sure you understood the appeal. Adrian pursed his lips, wrangling down a grin, and then began:Â
âYour ragtag group of adventurers hits the open road, taking only what you can carry on your backs. After walking for some time, you come to a fork in the road, with no signage indicating where each path leads. The only thing around is a seemingly innocuous eagle perched on a branch overhead. What do you do?â
I just know fbi dex is the type whose voice suddenly goes all squeaky and starts cracking during a heated argument, basically announcing âI'm about to cry in five seconds.â (If you've ever witnessed thatâor been that personâyou know exactly what I mean.)

the need for extra man power has you back in the yosemite, it's all too familiar--the trees, trails, the campsite you walk into, the man that looks like he has always waited for you to come back to him.
a/n: I told myself I wasn't gonna write for Shane, but I had this idea and I NEEDED to write it.
âHere comes good olâ green jeans.â Shane doesnât look. You donât acknowledge him, âYou happy?â He continues, you are stepping out of the bush, pushing aside a branch that is too low.Â
âNever happy to be back here.âÂ
Shane scoffs, tipping in the last remnants of his coffee from a familiar mokapot like it isnât twenty one hundred, âAinât talking about here and you know it.âÂ
âOutside this park isnât any of your concern.â
âCanât ask my wife how sheâs doing?â
âI ainât your fucking wife no more.â You snapâheâs always known exactly how to push your buttons. ââKay wifey.â Youâd kill him, but heâs never been too good at covering his tracks. Someoneâd find him in a day or twoâtoo little time to cover up. âWhatcha doing here wifey? Ainât you SOU?â Your jaw is clenched tight enough to crack. You donât bother to ask how he knows about your transferâback when you had been married you were just in Cannabis enforcement. He darts a glance towards your dog, a familiar German Shepherd with a tail that doesnât wag when she sees him.Â
She remembers, even if she had just been in training during your messy, drawn out divorce. âComing to interrogate me âbout that girl too? Just a few hours after Turner too.â Turner, you slide a finger through the loop of your jeans.Â
âNo, Maguire. I was called in âboutââ you cringed at how quickly you slunk back into familiar patterns of absorbing his lingo, ââabout that girl, but just as help. Baile and I are.. good.â He had always known. It was just a matter of how often he acknowledged your skill (not at all.) He is staring down at the finger looped into your belt, too smug. You hate him, so you untangle your hand and try to focus on the sounds of the woods, rather than the heat of his stareâthe knowing, as if maybe, maybe, you knew that at the end of the trail, itâd be Shane.Â
âJust passing through.â You add, noticing the way that Baile is alerting toward a smaller tent in the corner, a half-buried backpack you don't recognize inside. It's a small gesture, the way her ears are standing at attention and she can't seem to turn away, even when her eyes are darting at Shane, cautious of a man more animal than her.
He tips some of the coffee back, edge of his arrogant smile making you want to smack it out of his mouth. âRight by my campsite.âÂ
You walk past, wordlessly, past the stump of a tree with a bullet hole in, darting a glance inside the tent but unable to make out details ads you're prepared to disappear back into the forest. The only tell of movement is Baileâs growlâa thin, rather weak noise that youâve always joked is why she isn't for bite work. Then Shaneâs rough hand is grabbing your wrist and you are swinging around with a right hook that he barely avoids, but doesnât let go of your wrist.Â
Age looks good on him, you think. He has always looked best under the stars, mightâve been âcause the dark hid the ever-present arrogance. You were used to men like him. Once it didnât bother you.Â
Mightâve been that the moonlight made him look otherworldlyâhalf his face obscured, the wetness on his lips glistening and reflecting stars, well, you had always had a curiosity for what was on the dark side of the moon.Â
You never knew why you ended up with Shane. It couldâve been timing, the perfect storm of you both being fresh out of the Army and struggling to adjust, leaning into familiarity but you knew why it endedâalways choosing a slightly different path: Ranger and Green Beret, Wildlife Management Officer and Game Warden, stewing and leaving.Â
âYour boyfriend is so cute.â Kassandra whispers, conspiratorial as her sweat slick arm presses against your own bare one, her warm skin bright to the point of almost glowing against your colder one.Â
You look over towards Shane, glowering against the wall of the barâeyes never leaving you, âsupposed to be protective but making you look as out of place as you feel. âThank you.â You donât break eye contact, voice raisedânot enough to be a shout despite the rowdiness of the crowd mixing with the music that wouldâve made it understandable.Â
You just want your next words to carry, âHeâs a rescue.â Kassandra is laughing, airy and lightly draping over you like a summer cover-up. Shane doesnât look amused. He never is. Just go home.
âGet your hand off me âfore you lose it, Maguire.â His grip tightens, never one to back down from a challenge. There is something in his eyes, something that isnât remorseâa man like this canât feel something as paltry.Â
You could remember a time that his world mightâve revolved around you, you could remember a time when his undivided attention was a prize to be won, how poignant that you seem to be his focal point when you no longer want it.
âGoing âround at night when thereâs a killer out there.â Shane is shaking his head, sounding disappointed but still unable to take his eyes from you.Â
On the worst nights of your failed marriage, you thought how easy it wouldâve been like to put your glock to the back of his head, how easily your marriage couldâve been if you shot his brains out and analyzed his every thought, then shoved the messy pieces back in, took a stapler to the wound--no more dancing around the issue, no more of his silence and inability to apologize or process his emotions.
You felt that familiar urge now, trigger finger twitching with the force of your wantâa congealed, pulsating mess inside your chest. âA killer got my wrist caught.â His jaw clenches, he is a coiled spring waiting to launch against your faceâitâs all too familiar.Â
Itâs all too easy to fall back, so you use your free hand to pry his hand off youâit lifts easy, Shane knows heâs already pushed you to the point that youâd beat his hand off if he didnât.Â
When you are too far out to punch him, just far enough that he is half obscured by the forest and you can only make out pieces of his torso, some of his pants and the loose way his hands rest at his side, his mocking, bitchy voice is calling out to you âGânight Maguire.âÂ
it was at night when u got home one time and was met with the sight of him just.. in ur room⌠organising ur clothes drawer.
you basically jumped at the sight: "What the fuckâ dex! are you trying to give me a heart attack?" u huffed, hand on ur heart and clearly still recovering from the scare of a massive man (who was still suited as bullseye) in ur room at 11pm. he just looks at u with the expression of an unimpressed cat as if heâd done nothing wrong!
"your room is messy." he says. vaguely gesturing to the pile of clothes in a basket placed in the corner.
another time, you could be watching a movie, havenât checked ur phone in a bit when u hear the sound of a window sliding open from ur bedroom. dex walking out with a bit of a concerned expression before relaxing at the sight of you, "you werenât responding to my texts." standing by the TV as he squinted at you skeptically⌠as if he wasnât literally standing next to the reason why.
"..iâm watching a movie, babe. i didnât see the messages," sighing softly as you patted the couch, dex immediately moving to plop down next to you like an overgrown puppy.
another time, you were sleepingâ trying to sleep. tossing and turning with grumbles and complaints and as if the universe was finally on ur side you heard ur bedroom door being opened gently, "mhmmn.. dex..?" u mumbled, rubbing ur eyes and rolling onto ur back. dex grunting softly in response as u heard him kick his boots off, settling beside you on the bed as he shifted you onto a more comfy position.
"baby⌠you canât just keep breaking into my home."
"âŚyes i can." he grumbled, before he kissed ur neck gently and snuggling you tightly.
