okay so i've been doing some Thinking about Warder bonds (...surely not relevant for anything i'm currently writing) and specifically around their actual mechanisms. like obviously there's magic yadda yadda yadda, but i find the type of devotion the bond instills fascinating because i don't think being able to feel each other's emotions would create that much closeness and loyalty on its own and it also seems universal that while the exact dynamics differ, pretty much all Warders are submissive to their Aes Sedai to some extent.

i came to the conclusion that a Warder bond must manipulate dopaminergic pathways — neurological pathways responsible for reward, motivation, and executive function amongst other things — and give Warders boosts of dopamine for just being near their Aes Sedai. i don't think this is inherently problematic — lots of mundane things give people boosts of dopamine, but i think the extent to which it does to Warders simulates drug addiction and would explain why Aes Sedai feel a deep grief when their Warder dies, but only Warders will become suicidal because not only are they experiencing a terrible, life-altering grief, they're also going through what is essentially a sudden and severe withdrawal and the only solution to recover is to be bonded to another Aes Sedai (thereby replacing the missing dopamine).

and it also makes sense for why the Warder bond might have been invented (possibly when Aes Sedai had more knowledge of anatomy and physiology) if the only way of securing bodyguards/loyal soldiers was to literally re-write the reward pathways in their brains so their foremost concern would be serving their Aes Sedai at the cost of their own lives.

anyways... even with consensual bonds, it's kind of fucked up to be chemically dependent on another person. i love it :)
