have you ever had to restart a song because you spaced out and werenβt appreciating it enough

Oysters // Tori Amos
Buy: iTunes // Amazon
When it comes to music as a form of therapy, Tori Amos is considered a heroine. Her following is a whole subculture of people who call themselves "ears with feet" (a term that Tori dubbed in the 90's). Many of these people have been saved by the empowering and healing messages in her music. Although, Tori would probably correct me here and say they saved themselves.Β
She has had what some consider a return to form with her newest album Unrepentant Geraldines, which is more piano-centric than previous records. She also stopped hiding behind wigged archetypes and thematic concepts to reveal a real woman with insecurities and a fear of what it means to be an aging woman in our society. The stand out tracks seem to be the most stripped down, the most vulnerable, such as Oysters.
With such a rich back catalogue (including her 80s snafu, Y Kant Tori Read, which actually is full of little gems) and her "lizard lounge" of covers, Tori definitely knows how to keep her audience on their toes at her live shows. I attended her show in Los Angeles at the Greek Theatre this past Wednesday, and I was very pleased that Oysters was one of the two songs from the new album that she played. I was also awestruck when she mashed up Bjork's Hyperballad with her own Cloud On My Tongue, but I digress.
This song hearkens imagery from childhood, like the ruby slippers clicking their heels to get home. Slippers or shoes symbolize staying true to our own path. While listening, we may ask ourselves if we are moving forward in the direction that our inner beliefs point to.
Ruby also symbolizes life force and blood, fire and passion. It's the firey red root chakra that keeps us connected and grounded.
Tori has talked about the connection to nature in relation to this song. Sometimes we get stuck and don't know how else to move forward on our path but to take up gardening, to get physically grounded with our feet in the sand, in order to stop thinking and stop the negative patterns that may be taking hold of our lives.Β
Oysters are a symbol of sexuality, security, and also transformation. Some of them change between sexes. They can take a disturbing intruder and instead of just extinguishing it, they transform it. Tori sings, "Not every girl is a pearl. Not every girl is popular," with her high notes. This was the part where my heart broke and sobs erupted from my eyeballs the first time I listened to the song. It's hard to define why. But I believe it has to do with the value that is placed upon the pearls, how society views the feminine. It doesn't matter if we are cracked open or damaged, if we suffered from an intrusion. It only seems to matter how pretty our pearls are. And once that is taken from us, we have been conditioned to believe we have no value left.
But as Tori turns these oysters in the sand, she offers hope that things might change.Β
You Know MeΒ Well // Sharon Van Etten

Song diagnosis: existential crisis
It was the most perfect summer evening. Just cool enough to get away with a light shirt and long skirt. The sun was setting over Lake Mendota. Pinkness was kissing the sails of boats in the distance. Sharon Van Etten in her carefree way was setting up on stage in a denim shirt, and taking to random friends and fans as they approached. She smiled as she texted on her phone. Her casual and light attitude did not elude to the powerful and soul-reaching performance she was about to give. This was the last night of her tour and we could all tell it was special. Before she played "You Know Me Well," she dedicated it to all the crazy people. "Crazy" in the most endearing way possible. Cause we all go through hell. We all question our existence. Some just handle it better than others. Some just might need more help and compassion through those times. I think this song speaks to those who are on the other end too - the ones who are The Shoulders. The ones who have been on this part of their journey and can offer bits of wisdom and advice on how to keep going. The ones that hold you and help with the bandages.
Everyone will go with you Listen for the way out as you Cut me to the chase til I'm On the other side and when It all comes out We're as empty as a brick house that we Built without the sides Everyone is crazy with their own life Lies in existential you ever want to find your way out Turn into yourself again and reach on out To become your true self You know me well You show me hell when I'm looking And here you are Looking All the skies are fallin' and the sun is movin' up and down Even when you're in a dark way Some decisions shield you from the positivity until You reach out to me You say why you hate it as you pry your way in I need another investigative mind Tell me that you're injured, yourself, and you've been healing And I will see this through You know me well You show me hell when I'm looking And here you are Looking I told you then I'd hold you when you need it And there you are Looking Away You know me well
Wherever you are in your life, just know that you are lucky to be here in the human experience. Emotions are a gift to be treasured. Even the bad ones, because they are unique to us. And they are fleeting. They are meant to be embraced and let go. Let the energy flow through you. Emotions are just the soul breathing.
Edit: Sharon was super cool to comment on this post on Twitter. Love her!

@diagnosedmusic It's about going to therapy, and a plea to someone that needs therapy but doesn't utilize... Pretty close. X
Do you still have your mixed tapes? I still have dozens of them. I can't bare to throw them out.
I've made some of these.

listening to music with your pal
The Music Shrink isn't all about mental troubles, but about finding music that inspires and makes us nod in appreciation. Music should, no doubt, put a smile on our face sometimes. I had to give a shout of to Kawehi for this awesome cover. She's a talented, looping goddess who completely reinvents this classic Nirvana tune.
