My ideas on fixing doctor who.
This is some of my ideas on what I'd do with Doctor who and yes I know “How I'd fix doctor who” has become a running joke online. I don't think I know better than anyone else or am some kind of big brained genius, just a fan spitballing a bit.
1: Ignore the Billie Piper thing completely.
Just pretend it never happened, was a dream, or weird time stuff going on! Don't even bring it up in a new era, just do a time skip with the 16th doctor having already been established for years before they meet the companion.
Through would be fun if 16 just rolls out of the tardis in 15's outfit, just ret-conning the Billie Piper thing.
Ties in with point one, time skip, we reintroduce things like how Rose did it in 2005.
3: Speaking of this is not 2005, you need to be fresh.
New who are the time took a lot of inspiration from Buffy when it came back, that isn't going to fly any more.
My idea, do mini serials, three to four part stories letting us get to know a world or era with it's characters rather than rush through stories are a break neck pace. This works since it adapts better to the streaming era while also not being too over padded like classic who.
Could run three of these serials per seasons so if they are three parts are each that gives you ten episodes per season, if four then you get 12 episodes, plus having it broken down into three stories would save money on having to make sets and locations for 8-10-12 different stories as we did in new who.
I know some people might be against it but the BBC is hit hard for funding these days and doing better merchandising could put money back into the TV show.
This means being more loose with things instead of only giving character opinions the right to make toys, seriously let NECA, MacFarlane toys and others have a crack at license. Let's get some unique dalek toys, even stuff not from the show since kids love that kind of stuff[Remember the alien and predator toys in the day?]
Do proper Doctor who war gaming miniatures, build a better table top RPG for the turbo nerds, let the books and audios do some wild creative stuff again like the 90s allowed rather than MCU slop “What if the third doctor met X and Y from the new series in a big multi media cross over???!?!”
Get a real Doctor who X Fortnite event going complete with skins, fighting cybermen in a battle royale event like the first order star wars stuff, fourth doctor costume, playable doctors, UNIT soldier. Yeah Tim Sweeney is a total twat but having your IP out there for millions of eyeballs to see is very good to get some interest back on the franchise beyond just aging super fans.
4: Stop pandering to nostalgia.
Doesn't work for Dave Feloni, stop doing it!
5: Have more confidence in the scripts.
You don't need to force comedy bits in, if you wanna do a scary story do it, you wanna do a serious one go for it, high adventure? It feels like RTD 2 tried to kneecap things with “Well it's for kids so it shouldn't be scary or too dark.” which ended up with an overly pantomime era that ended up turning those kids away and making them go “Doctor who? That's a show for little babies I heard.”
It doesn't need to be adult but if you lack some edge, you are not going to win younger people over, they don't like feeling pandered too or as if they are watching something infantile, make the show have a forbidden allure again.
Don't even explain how it's back, just have it back, ignore the timeless children lore stuff. If you have to explain things, wait for a special further down the line.
But the last of the time lords thing has been done to death, it's cooked, it's been taken as far as you can get it and we need to have something on the board you could do some interesting new ideas with and the Doctor having something bigger than him is interesting.
Base a new design on the Peter Cushing daleks, TV21 and the 1960s looks but with an updated overall like how Strange new worlds did for TOS's aesthetics.
Instead of being shouty murder machines, have them be cunning political operators again, manipulative while returning to their inspirations of fascism.
I'd also de-power them a bit while still keeping them scary, they are still strong, deadly but with the time war era ones having them being so OP means when they do get defeated it becomes more silly after a while.
But seriously they need to retire the bronze time war ones badly.
8: Stop bringing the same 1990s era group of super fans in to be showrunners
We need younger people, younger ideas, new visions, rather than treating running the show like a nepotism job between the same fan group rotating the position between their friends.
9: Make the show scary again.
The hide behind the sofa thing was a key theme in the old series and RTD2 was not scary at all, it treated the idea of scaring kids like a taboo.
Doctor who should be scary sometimes, it should be adventurous, make you think, you learn a little, it can be many things but scary is one.
