We were talking about marriage today in R.E., namely Christian weddings and their traditions. Whilst I was asking the pupils what they already knew about weddings… One of my worse behaved students put his hand up quietly and said, "Miss, in Ireland they've just said that boys can marry boys and girls can marry girls". The rest of the class dissolved into giggles and shrieks of laughter, but this is normally silly boy remained unsmiling and unchanged. I waited until the rest of the class had calmed down before informing them that this was indeed true. I awarded the boy a star for being so mature about such a sensitive issue. I then informed them all that it was perfectly normal and acceptable for this to happen. Let's hope that some of this learning sticks and we end up having a better generation as a result of our teaching. Peace out.
