Reblog if you want more abortion representation in media.
I’m so tired of characters in movies and tv shows changing their minds at an abortion clinic the very last minute because “this baby is precious🥺 this life is innocent🥺”. abort that parasite. abortion is human rights. abortion is healthcare. abortion is good.
huge huge agree, but i want to add a little further nuance: not every depiction of abortion should treat the fetus as a parasite!
the goal should be depicting abortion as a normal part of people's lives and a vital part of good healthcare. that includes people who get abortions they don't want but need, that includes people who do want an abortion but also have a genuine sense of love and connection to their fetus, that includes people who need to mourn after their abortion.
none of these people should be depicted as more virtuous or decent than the person who gets an abortion and is joyful about it, the person who sees the fetus as a clump of cells, the person who gets an abortion for no other reason than "i don't want to be pregnant," the person who has no complicated moral feelings about the abortion and doesn't feel the need to justify their decision.
but its important to show the full spectrum of experiences with abortions. for a lot of reasons but one of those is because people need to know that abortion isn't like a plastic surgery operation or skincare treatments, its not just an optional indulgence people do because they just wanna. its about whether you are emotionally / physically / financially capable and willing to give birth and bring a new person into the world and likely care for and raise that person.
i think of the show "secret life of the american teenager" which follows a pregnant 15 year old (who, of course, is pressured out of getting an abortion and giving the child up for adoption; this actually happens at least twice but the other time the child was stillborn). & in that show, and in real life, it seems like a lot of young people get pressured out of an abortion by people who talk about motherhood and the beauty of raising a child and encouraging them to imagine what it could be like to connect with their child and be their mother. and the fact that they are able to feel a sense of connection and love, and really see potential joy and satisfaction from being a parent, is proof that getting an abortion is the wrong choice for them.
and i wonder how much such young people could benefit from seeing that it is possible that you could give birth and raise a child and have a real genuine love for that child, and learn to love life as a teen parent, and raise them successfully to be a well-adjusted and happy person, and you can still decide having an abortion is the right choice for you. you can say "i want to be a child. i want to have my summers of freedom and my hangouts with friends after school and i don't want to experience the pain of childbirth or the stress of making sure my child is cared for, i don't want the scrutiny of being a teen mom, i just want to be a kid" and you can say all that while also feeling sad about giving up the hypothetical loving rich relationship you could've had with this fetus. its not about whether or not you can dissociate yourself from the fetus, its about whether or not you are ready and willing to handle birth and parenthood in that moment. that is it.
its important that people see that feminist demands for abortion access aren't just for the libertine atheist slut who kills that thang without a care in the world. not because the libertine atheist slut's motivations are inherently less nuanced or emotionally sensitive or thought-out or sympathetic. but because we need to end the idea that only a certain kind of person would/could get an abortion, at least without being deeply guilty about it. abortions shouldn't be seen as solely as a last resort for victims of gruesome sexual violence, or as a habit of rebellious feminist punks. it should be seen as a vital and normal medical procedure that is part of so many diverse experiences for so many diverse people.
anyways rant aside. op is so very right and there is just so much that we can explore about abortion & how people can experience having one through media. more abortions in everything RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
