Tart Explosion
In the last five years, Gose has gone from a near extinct style of beer to seasonal staple. Just look at the entries at the Great American Beer Festival. Ten years ago, Gose and Berliner Weisse weren’t even judged styles. According to Stan, in 2009, there were thirteen entries for German style sour ale, this year there were 111.
This explosion is partially due to renewed interest in endangered styles in beer geek circles, but more broadly the sudden, enthusiastic embrace of sour beer.
There is some bad Gose out there – too acidic, too salty, blah. But here in Oregon we have some amazing examples. Pfriem is putting together an impressive wild ale program and the Gose hits all the right notes.
It begins with a grainy nose, raw and a little wooden. It appears quite flat, like a tepid bubble bath, but this Gose still has some life in it. The flavor is balanced, not too sour, not really salty at all. It’s quite nice. There is a farmhouse quality to it, a little fruity a little spicy. Is that a smattering of coriander I detect? I like it. It’s got depth, even if it’s missing some of the salty tang of its brethren.
