Armani Aqua for Life CSI Campaign
We love do-gooders. Since 2011, Acqua for Life has provided over 530 million liters of clean water to nearly 80 communities, in seven countries and on three continents. This year, they put up a challenge as a way of raising awareness of this ever-increasing concern that is the scarcity of clean water. The challenge was to use only 10 litres of clean water for one day on the 22 March, World Water Day. This was not easy for me, not one bit. I was stressed at the thought of running out of water to wash my hands (something I do very frequently as I have two little ones at home), to cook with and the big one – to wash myself with. Here’s how my day went:
I woke up and headed straight to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my hands. For rinsing my mouth, I poured a little water in a cup so I didn’t use a lot. I was surprised at how much water I needed to feel as though my hands were clean. After this, I made a cup of tea for myself. The one and only for the day…
Next was to cook oats for the family, which used up about three cups of water, much to my panic.
A little later, it was time to shower. That was out of the question as I would need the whole 10 litres to do that, surely? So for the purpose of this challenge, I made a point of showering as late as I could the previous night so I could engage with a sink bath this morning, carefully measuring just enough water into the bathroom sink to be able to wipe my face clean and wash all the other parts of my body. The result was me standing naked in my bathroom, freezing and feeling clean-ish. All I wanted was one warm rinse of a shower but alas. This was not to be. Not today.
As soon as I was dressed, I prepared a hot water bottle to warm myself up a little bit. More water usage - ugh. I didn’t fill it up (I usually do so i dno’t have to re-fill every hour). I poured just enough water for it to be effective. I’m proud to say that once the hot water bottle went cold, I used the water to water the plants.
Luckily I’m not a big coffee or tea drinker. One cup of tea a day is more than enough for me. For lunch, I made a simple sandwich and drank a glass of water afterwards. Later in the afternoon, I had to get dinner started. Pasta, which is a go-to family meal for me when I don’t have much time, was out of the question. It requires too much water. So I opted for a chicken stir-fry, for which I used absolutely no water. I used the ready cooked noodles that come in vacuum packs.
For dinner, I had a great excuse to drink wine instead of water…which I did. But then I started thinking of how dehydrated I will feel in the morning, which will result in me using more water than usual. So I ended up having a glass of water after my wine.
Later, I brushed my teeth and washed my face, using the little bit of clean water I had left. I was truly happy to see the end to this day because all I wanted was to jump into a hot shower before bed. But I couldn’t. So I went to bed.
Here are some disturbing water habits I picked up about myself:
-I tend to be a bit of a germ-phobe so for example: I have to rinse a glass before I drink from it. Even straight from the dishwasher or cupboard. This is bad.
-I don’t drink nearly as much water as I thought I did. This should change.
-I wash my hands too frequently and unnecessarily.
-I’m too indulgent in my showers, they can definitely be cut shorter.
3 Tips on how you can save water on a daily basis:
1. Brush your teeth using a cup instead of running water.
2. Use your water from your hot water bottle to water plants (winter is coming so this one will come in handy!)
3. Invest in a waterless hand sanitiser, if you tend to over-wash your hands.
