The Marauders Generation

Severus stroked the salamander he kept in his cloak pocket. He was nervous. He glanced toward the front of the train. He turned to look out his compartment window and stared intensely as the trees and hills danced by. He’d never seen this part of the country, but he couldn’t enjoy it. Impatient, he looked to the front of the train again... He sighed. Frustrated, but mostly worried. Where was she?

At the front of the train, 11-year-old boys and girls clamored about the train car. Boys chased after each other, stealing each others’ hats, and girls took turns admiring their new robes and satchels. Severus had no interested in socializing. He had no need for numerous friends. He preferred solitude and when he was in someone’s company, he preferred a certain level of intellectual depth and skill to their person. Much like himself.

Tap-tap-tap... Someone knocked lightly just outside his compartment.

“Hello, Severus,” Lily greeted.

Severus stared blankly for a moment before replying bluntly, “Hi.”

“Keep me company, will you? I don’t know anyone else. I’d enjoy a chat.”

“Yes, I suppose. Come in.” Severus hid his breath of relief, the tension in his muscles immediately releasing. He took the salamander out of his pocket and held it gently in his hand.
