If magic is fickle, technology’s a real bitch. Between the two of them, the sleepy little world of Earth is now in congress with a mixture of worlds, times, and places. Time-travel is common-place, so much so that sometimes rifts open up and people living in the past tumble into the present, if it can be called that. Linear time is so passé. Everything in this universe is not always as it seems: magicians commune with demons, gods and goddesses stalk the planets, and beware: there are monsters here, some wearing human skins.
Slavery is legal throughout the universe, particularly on Earth and in deep space, though a dedicated movement of rebels have sprung up who wish to change the status quo. You can find an auction house from Sicily to Mars, and far beyond that. The most dreaded auction house, though, is Slave Point.
By common agreement, the past, the Earth, and space colonies are under the Humans’ jurisdiction. Monsters and faeries are easy to find in the Demon Realm, though some of those demons are employed in Hell. Angels live in Heaven, a stifling paradise. But in this birdcage, lines are crossed between worlds and between people nigh hourly.
Welcome to the Birdcage. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Ask my muse questions about their relationship with another character.
I LOVE THESE PLEASE.
【 karasu 】:
"I cannot prove a delivery that hasn’t yet transpired, lovely. Here, however, is my expenditure list with merchant’s stamps." He reached into his voluminous coat and pinched two fingers around the document.
The thick sheath of rice paper was proffered, tied up with a ribbon that Karasu unknotted. Written in bold ink, first in Chinese and then over again in Japanese, the goods and prices were meticulously documented with careful detail. Flaws in any goods were also documented.
Food, medicine, weapons, armor, the accoutrements of war, all could be found in those neat lists.
Karasu then pulled a second paper out, which listed cannons and names of crew members. It was clear he had been waiting to use it as a bargaining chip. In a gesture of good faith, he added it to the pile and leaned back to smile at Kurama, lacing his knuckles together, allowing him time to peruse the lists.
"It’s cheaper than one normally finds in this port," Karasu asserted. He grinned. "No tariffs for smugglers, you see."
【🌹】 —— Those proffered documents were taken between his fingers, their skin-tone a tad darker than the usual, run-of-the-mill geisha. There was a stark contrast between his fingers and his painted face as he read over the expenditure list, studied the merchant’s stamps for any signs of forgery. He could find none. Everything looked to be in place. Still, he made sure to carefully study all accounts, the pearls of his vertebrae resting against the old wood of the door’s frame calmly. He moved then to seat himself at the small table, his knees beneath him as the accounts were settled into piles. Atop that pile, the final document was placed, then taken up to be studied as well. Everything seemed legitimate. "…This will suffice." Wordlessly, he then gestured to the pot of tea resting near the table’s edge. He would order a fresh pot, but that would look a bit suspicious, as everyone had watched his last client leave, and none had seen (likely) this man enter. He settled the papers into one pile, then, lacing them together with a ribbon from his hair to be delivered to Osuzu-san upon the pirate’s leave. "We would like to have these armaments in our possession as soon as possible. Dangerous though it might be, we’ve no choice but to deliver them here, to the ochaya. What is your earliest convenience?”
"They're already unloaded. I can have them delivered into the service door in an hour. They'll come for six hours after that, in uneven increments and different sized packages; wouldn't want people to get suspicious, now," he chuckled with a lopsided, hook-toothed grin.
"If you want, they can also be staggered over the next week, but I wouldn't recommend that. One never knows what the enemy is doing, in war," said Karasu, who knew the exact date and time of Sho's proposed attack.
Karasu watched his gesture, and took up the tea pot, removing the lid to sniff the remains of the tea. He sighed, and poured the lukewarm dregs into a cup without Kurama's aid, before slurping it, just to see the pretty geisha wince. "Do we have an arrangement? I assume I cannot sample your wares until you've sampled mine, hm? Shall I take my leave, then?

Karasu tweaked his sleeves, listening thoughtfully to the geisha’s silence, allowing it to linger. He kept his face blank, allowing his new red fox to wander into the trap of his own accord.
When the answer came, it made his lips curl into a wide smile. That can be arranged. And soon, it would be. He couldn’t wait to possess this pretty darling. More than that, he couldn’t wait to orchestrate—some day, some time—confusion, and steal the geisha away.
Oh he had plans, alright. And all of them centered around himself and his selfish needs.
The next few words were met with a lessening of his charming but twisted grin, his lips smoothing out and relaxing. “That is good,” Karasu agreed, “because I don’t beg.” He changed mindsets on the spot, from lecher to businessman. “Forgive me for beginning a business discussion in the hall; this is not a secure location. Do you have anywhere more private we might meet?”
The first shipment agreed upon was already smuggled onto Okinawa. It could be delivered at any time, and Karasu fully intended it to be. Once the payment was in his hand. Once he had secured patronage from Kurama. Then and only then would Karasu leave the sweet redheaded boy in peace.
【🌹】 —— The twist of the pirate’s pale lips, even as it lessened, did not go unnoticed by the geisha—nothing ever did. Bright eyes took in every subtle sign, every inward detail of his intentions. Whatever he was planning, it bore unpleasant consequences from both parties. Call it nothing more than intuition, but Kurama had never yet judged a person poorly…and this was a man that, already, he’d decided that he could not trust. All the same, he and the rest of the ochaya had little choice at this point. Calmly, he removed an elegantly painted kiseru from the sleeve of his kimono, the opposing sleeve from which he’d retrieved the knife. Those emerald eyes wandered aside a moment, as if in consideration before turning to gracefully move down the hall, passing two doors before disappearing into the room from which he’d emerged—the same room in which he’d entertained the blind samurai. As he walked, he spoke in hushed tones. "…Yes. This will do. We won’t be bothered here.” Even after-hours, a closed door within the private rooms of the ochaya were not disturbed. Upon the wall hung two crossed swords, in the middle of the room sat a small table meant for tea. In the back, left-hand corner, another door lay closed—though, this was the door that he was then led to, through which a small bedroom was set with lavish comfort for the guest. Clearly, the first room was meant for a different type of entertainment than the second. The door was opened, the room shown, but not entered. With his kiseru now lit, he rolled the metal tip between his lips with a gaze lying flat and blunt. "…I don’t have time to waste. Shall we proceed? I’ll take the proof of your delivery to my Lady, and then you shall have the prior payments that we’ve promised. Five gold ryo…nine silver pieces of eight. I will grant you two hours of my time. That should suffice.” The bargain was worded with clarity, and caution. He would not leave himself open to any trickery by this man’s hand. Patiently, he awaited his reply.

"The cost is entirely negotiable," Karasu said airily, gesturing as if to wave aside the information. He looked Kurama over, the edges of his eyes crinkling. "Perhaps just your services as a geisha. I like you a sight better than the average liaison I have to work with."
He recalled the arrogant boy Lord Sho had sent with a faint distaste. A beautiful lad, to be sure—no Kurama, but a beauty indeed—but Sho’s uncaring attitude towards his welfare and inherent arrogance spoke ill of the lad’s master.
"I may be willing to part with the cannons and accoutrements without any extra payment but for your time. The five gold ryo and nine silver pieces of eight previously negotiated for, and some time with your company, will be more than enough recompense.”
He should attempt to push up the price, but Karasu was in a good mood, thinking of negotiations and patronages for him and this beautiful geisha. He would answer to the admiral of his fleet, Sakyo, later.
For now, the Wokou was overjoyed at the prospects.
——-
Historical notes: Ryo were the major gold coin of measurement at this time period, the yen not having come into currency yet. Pieces of Eight were Spanish silver coins minted in Mexico, and used as the first international currency at this time. You could buy with a piece of eight from Manila to Dakar to Nanjing, useful for a pirate.
【🌹】 —— Negotiable. That wasn’t particularly the word that Kurama had hoped to hear. This insinuated that he intended to ask for more than the payment agreed upon. However, what he did ask for was unexpected. No gold, no pieces of eight—at least not more than had already been agreed upon—but his services. A subtle frown laced his features, contemplating that request as his body slowly lessened its tension following the prior violence. In truth, it wasn’t the worst thing that he could have asked for. At least he wasn’t demanding more money, or time with one of the girls. A filthy man like this—something about him set Kurama’s sharp defenses on edge. He wouldn’t stand for any of the girls that he’d sworn to protect standing in as payment for a lecher— —but Kurama himself was a different story. He’d vowed to keep the ochaya safe at all costs, this one included. Besides, it wasn’t as though it were anything different from his usual duty, save for the fact that he’d be paid in weapons instead of money. If it would save Osuzu-san from losing more profit, he’d obediently oblige. He responded with a lifted chin, his expression unreadable as his tone, though every inch of him was eloquent and polite. Emerald eyes betrayed only the slightest fire. He was a man of few words. "…That can be arranged…but do not assume that begging will earn my mercy, if we have been deceived.”
Karasu tweaked his sleeves, listening thoughtfully to the geisha's silence, allowing it to linger. He kept his face blank, allowing his new red fox to wander into the trap of his own accord.
