i got inspired by antique furniture -> decided to try and make a wooden doll.

she is whittled entirely out of balsa wood with a craft knife, and colored with wood dye. the cabinet has miniature hinges made of tube beads and a metal rod, and closes with a magnet. she absolutely should hold a sentimental & important object, but i don't have any that are the correct size, so i just put in some cute trinkets.

Took a break from planning out and testing more complicated designs to weave this little floral band. It was a great excuse to test out a dual-color pick up technique and to try weaving with a mix of yarn types. Turns out that makes tensioning a nightmare, but the fun variety of textures on the band almost makes it worth it.

The dual-color pick up technique, on the other hand, worked out really well! It's fairly limiting if you're worried about the length of floats on the back (like me), but I'm thrilled to have found a new way to manipulate color!

A quote from O'Neill: “The buffoonery of the Kewpies and the passion of my serious drawings playing side by side is unusual, but not too unusual. In this droll existence, the Hamlet and Lear have always consorted with the clown.”

Here’s some more of her “Sweet Monsters”. This series was very personal to her, and she meant to keep all these drawings private until Auguste Rodîn insisted she show them.
