King Lear, Act I, Scene I - Cordelia's Farewell. Oil on canvas (1898) Edwin Austin Abbey (American, 1852–1911) painted this large-scale canvas depicting the opening of Shakespeare's tragedy. Abbey captures the climactic fallout of King Lear’s "love test." After Cordelia refuses to join her sisters, Goneril and Regan, in hollow public flattery, Lear disowns her and exits the scene.
