there was a youtube short that followed me around for a while that was like. i think a clip from a live episode of dropout's game changer. that was just an audience cheering rabidly at robert reich saying "we are from cambridge massachussetts" as though. that itself was funny, or interesting, or entertaining, or noteworthy, or exciting, or anything other than a callback to an old bit completely divorced from any context. and i just watched it, and wondered to myself if i had ever actually laughed at anything in my life. like i have, in my brain, a memory of the original bit of trapp, rekha, and grant repeatedly asking sam where he was from being pretty funny when they did it. but that was because they just kept fucking asking, repeatedly, for no reason. absent any context, the words "we are from cambridge massachussetts" is just a nothing statement. it is a value neutral statement of fact. how could you find that funny? what is there to laugh at? am i the problem? and also why does sam reich think that having his father, former united states secretary of labor robert reich, appear on stage is a good look. that's not a celebrity. that's a politician. get him outta here

it's kinda fucking insane that "a dingo ate my baby" became this like. internationally recognized joke at the expense of all australians. like that was just a real thing that really happened. an actual personal tragedy that a real family actually experienced.
