Glam Garland for your Christmas Mantel- DIY by LaLainOz
This beauty is the favorite of all my Christmas decor. It's easy to do, here's how...
Christmas ornaments - vintage looking balls of varying sizes and colors
Christmas lights (I like green wire, white lights for this project)
Wires to tie everything together
Start with a clean slate...make sure your mantel is clear and clean.
Place nails or hooks on the top of your mantel to hold the evergreen garland that will be the base of your Glam Ornament Garland. I typically use five hooks, evenly spaced from side to side.
Use wire to secure your evergreen garland to all five hooks. This is the foundation of your entire Glam Garland so make sure you have it very secure on the hooks.
I like the greenery to be random and not evenly distributed so that it will peak out behind the ornament garland. This particular evergreen garland is gorgeous with pinecones and frosted tips.
Now for the layering to begin!
Add Christmas lights now, or at anytime during this project! Wire the lights to your foundational evergreen garland.
I got lucky and found this amazing garland of silver balls at Marshall's. It's perfect for this project and adds a great backdrop to the ball ornaments that come next. I use two of the silver ball garlands in the Glam Garland project.
Add the silver ball garland to the evergreen garland by wiring them together. If you can't find any of the silver ball garland for your project, don't worry! Ornaments alone are fine!
Notice how everything is securely wired together, yet I let the lights dangle a bit? This allows them to backlight the entire project from behind. Leaving them loose is fine, they'll be behind the ornaments.
Begin to wire ornaments to the evergreen garland base. Yes, one. at. a time. Feels like it takes forever, but it really does go fast!
I have a mixture of vintage glass ornaments and also new plastic (non-breakable) ornaments. The mixture of both types, in all sizes is really nice. Glass ornaments can be a pain with breakage. But they are so gorgeous they are worth it!
One thing you can do to help minimize breakage is to glue the glass ornament's hook/cap to it prior to wiring it to the evergreen garland. This little trick has saved me many an ornament! If your mantel is over a fireplace that you actually use, you'll want to make sure that you use "all temperature" glue.
Wire the ornaments and distribute the various sizes and colors randomly throughout the garland.
This little sweetie was a huge help while I wired ornaments. "Dude", our miniature Australian Shepherd is a big helper all the time.

Gradually your masterpiece will materialize!
Add some stockings below, and anything you want on top of the mantel. With this Glam Garland I believe less is best on the mantel! I found these funky Santas around town and knew they'd be perfect for the Glam Garland mantel. Notice how great the different sizes balance each other out? A moon shaped Santa on the left, and a sky-high tall Santa on the right. Your Glam Christmas Garland is finished!
