Young at Heart; The Youthful Dreamer

It is never quite evident to me what the meaning of a photo is when I initially take it. But when I reflect on it, work with the feelings of it, the meaning becomes unmasked; unraveled. Working with older models is something quite new to me. When I first started, I probably would have said no since I truly favored the “young” and the “tall.” But since meeting Harold via Instagram, I really got to know his cheerful disposition. The industries of the world are in favor of the “new” and “re-imagined.” The irony is, sometimes with age we hold much more value if we cultivate ourselves with the time we have here.

For me, I always wanted to focus on the soul. It’s not so much the outer appearance, but the inner that strikes my fancy. Appearances help in such a visual world such as Fashion and Photography. But for the work I wish to create, it must have a deeper meaning and hold the value of the soul.

Upon deeper analysis of these photos, it reminded me of how asleep people can be. How the world tarnishes our youthful outlook, our dreams, our hopes. Most people fall pray to the illusions of the world and forget what they came here to accomplish. They are overwhelmed by their life, their jobs, their bills, their responsibilities – which leaves little to no room for their dreams to grow and flourish – their true purpose that resides deep within their souls, is never yet realized and discovered.

Time is so short. I don’t need to live till 80 to realize that. I’m not the best keeper of my time, but I try to always move forward, to keep creating, to keep accomplishing, to keep holding on and staying youthful to my soul’s purpose. I think that’s what keeps a person young. The years of age are nothing but a number. It is the amount of life well lived that count; that either keep us youthful, or aged and ill. It is our choice of every minute, of everyday, that we must choose to ignore the distractions of the world and hold tightly to the wheel of life or to let it slip right past us and ignore our true purpose – our creations that the world will unfortunately never benefit from.

Fashion Hong Kong FW16 #Throwback #FBF - My First Season

My first season of fashion week… almost 3 years ago. Can you believe it? However, after all this time one of my favorite collections was from this very show. Originally these were shot for The Skinny NYC, however I wanted to start featuring some of the photos I’ve taken “way back when” on my blog right here for y’all.

At the time, I was a professional photographer, but I’ve learned a few tricks and improved along the way. I thought they were great at the time – ahhhhh what a noob. With the attainment of proper white balance mode on my camera, and the higher F stop, and the removal of my polarizer filter indoors (like whyyyyyy) – I’m a little bit better these days. But still, I struggle a little with my camera, the Canon 5D III, as it’s getting a tad dated and the autofocus points aren’t always accurate – which COMPLETELY saddens me when I got the PERFECT SHOT and thus… blurred. But nonetheless, my improvement over the years can be seen.. at least in my eyes lol.

I never wanted to take the typical type runway shots.. I wanted to go rogue.. go different.. and master that. Requires more work? Possibly, but for me I wanted my creativity shine. I wanted to make it my own and have a different set of photos compared to most photographers. So enough about the back story.. let me tell you what I actually like about Fashion Hong Kong HKTDC FW16.

It starts off with designers: LOOM LOOP, HARRISON WONG, and HIDY N.G.

The Loom Loop FW18 Collection was EVERYTHING. My love for color and creativity: leggings, cool shoes, butterflies abound. My soul was screaming with joy. As some of you might know, or not, lol, is that I no longer attend shows that don’t inspire me. SEE POST:

Well, anyway, my soul was screaming with delight. It’s everything I could have wanted to see in this virtual reality (simulation theory anyone?). The bow-tie necklaces, the butterfly headpieces, and the outfit that looks like waves???? Yeah I’m getting a little too excited thinking about it. Unfortunately it’s been a while to attend another show of theirs, but I hear they might be back FW19 SO SCOREEEE.

Harrison Wong

Harrison Wong’s FW16 collection showed me what a dapper gentleman should look like. With the tappered pants, newsboy persona, Englishman by the sea look, sleek fedoras, and coats with prints that remind me of lighting bolts, and splashes of water.. what’s not to love?? There also was color; eggplant and egyptian blue, but COLOR. When most designers resort to the blacks, whites, and traditional minimalistic colors, I give props to the designers who reintroduce colors into the wardrobes of men and women. Reminds me of the Beatles.

HIDY N.G.

The biggest selling point in my humble opinion in HIDY N.G.’s NYFW FW16 Collection would be the subtle use of glitter, lace, sheer, feathers, and embezzlement in a typical minimalist color palette. I’m not sure of the exact era of influence, but it’s the time of working women with class and attractiveness. Of course that’s subjective. Perhaps you can tell me in the comment section below. The millinery styled hats with the veil… SPOT ON. Very much a European thing.. that I was surprised to see in Ireland when I last visited.

Vivi Zubedi’s NYFW SS19 Collection was inspired by the city of Marrakech. Vivi incorporated her inspiration for the city with Indonesian designs and sillouhettes. Her goal is to be a worldwide affordable luxury brand, yet hold true to her commitments with her customers needs. The designs were vibrant with floral touches and spirng colors; a great refreshing touch to her already breathtaking NYFW FW18 Winter Collection. My favorites being the bright yellow and classy silhouettes.

Suedeson by Kimberly Tandra

Suedeson’s NYFW SS19 Collection “Nucleus” collection comes from the designers own personal experiences in diverging into the world of Couture. The pieces take inspiration from different races and cultures. There is a juxtaposition at play where two seemingly diverse details are used in the same look. Delicate looks next to bold looks; leather with hand-sewn details. Headpieces, batik, oversized bell sleeves were also used. While the leather can be seen as bold, materials such as silk, cotton, and organza balanced the look out and brought it down to earth; grounded.

Coretta Louise

Coretta Louise’s NYFW SS19 Collection, “Tropical Haven”, informed the world that tasteful batik designs can be worn in an elegant and modern manner. The hand painted silk can be worn in both in the urban area or in the everyday life; bringing a little tasteful elegance to any place or situation. Handwoven silk, organza, and tafetta lined the runway this season in the vibrant colors of gold, maroon, terracotta, and midnight blues.

Vivi Zubedi’s designs adhere to being sleek, modest, and luxury.

Winter can be a boring and an uninspiring season for most. Often, it is the time of year where thing’s run slow, and fashion looks the same. Being drawn to the more colorful spectrum, I often see how often people wear very similar clothes – with plain black jackets. This is not always limited to the winter months, I see people wear similar, standard looks year round as well. Vivi Zubedi challenges the norm, by bringing more (colorful) blacks, and awe-inspiring looks that can brighten up anyone’s cold winter day.

I think the major difference with Zubedi’s FW18 collection is that even though there is a lot of pieces in the darker, black spectrum, she mixes it up with the style of the outfits, accessories and fabircs such as lace, beads, studs, embroidery, and a little bit of color; greens, whites, blacks, blues. Even the color-pop with lipstick. The looks are modest, yet colorful by design. I love the casual mix of sneakers and caps with ordinarily high-end luxury looks.

My favorite of all, is the navy blue piece that reminds me of midnight stars in a winter night’s sky.

It’s always an honor to be amidst art that resonates with the soul. As per my previous posts I have mentioned, I have decided to become more selective as to which shows and designers I wish to cover and attend. F/FFFFFF did not fail to disappoint.

F/FFFFFF’s spring 2019 collection founded by Zac Zeng, awakened those childhood daydreams I had, but never realized I had forgotten. The colors are insanely vibrant and brought about reminisces of the 2000’s alien and space vibe trend.

I had a pair of midnight black iridescent glittered boots that I loved dearly as a child. I remember my feet outgrowing them but I loved them so much I would smash my toes into the shoes. Obviously, that didn’t last long. I never knew how much I had loved those shoes until I saw Zeng’s collection. The clothing styles and materials used (vinyl, awakened many fond memories and childhood dreams. In a world where people are encouraged to grow up and where abundantly bleak clothes exist, Zeng encourages us to grow up in style. The style that we once were allowed to bravely wear, and the dreams we once were allowed to dream.

You can be a space goddess if you wanted to, or wear space buns for a hairstyle. You can be a bug collector and observe nature, a (boy / girl) scout, a G.I. Joe Doll. You can even live your dream of being a chicken LOL. The collection gives us permission to live life the way we always envisioned it to be in a colorful and fun sort of way. It allows the child inside each one of us to feel alive once more as we strut down the sidewalks, spend time with our families, or maybe ,if you’re daring and or lucky enough, at our work. The collection gives permission to our inner kid and sets free our childish nature.

Ruby Fang has created some brilliantly strong female looks this season, NYFW SS19. Fabrics used such as tulle and satin each adhere to the feminine look. Fang also includes her knowledge of Chinese embroidery in her collection. Taking a closer look, many of the pieces include the Chinese traditional colors of reds, blacks, and gold embroidered threads. What makes Ruby Fang’s collection unique is the modernization of traditional and timeless clothing, the designs, colors, and her usage of shiny beads and sequins. Ruby Fang’s designs are classy, sexy, and strong.

“Australian brand Ozlana presented their much-anticipated new collection DREAM STILL____ at New York Fashion Week. An edgy yet romantic take on street couture, the new collection highlighted their experimental textiles, quality fabrics, and sustainable artisan techniques.

The mood at the runway was serene, with a naturalistic set design featuring dried wildflowers and pampas grass, soft fur overlays, and lightweight cloud props hanging from the air, illuminated in soft hues. The sound of chirping birds and projected moving scenes of waves and stars created an immersive experience, as if within nature, in the heart of midtown New York.

DREAM STILL____ translates a tale of nostalgia as a woman builds her life in the city, recalling her beautiful countryside youth, and lapsing into a sweet recollection of what has been. Designer Hannah Kim has created a casual and lux style with light feminine dresses in satin and chiffons, leather bomber jackets, and coloured fur gilets. DREAM STILL____ is a carefully developed collection, flowing effortlessly through a series of colourways transitioning from pretty pinks, baby blues and beiges, to black. Looks were layered, showing combinations of pieces. A strawberry motif embroidered on a long length knitted cardigan worn with a cherry print dress was accented by a red handbag and red sunnies for a cute look. A floral print pink dress with ruffled hem and cuffs oozed femininity.

Glints of metallic embellishments lifted the soft pastel palette, with beaded embroidery, delicate hanging eyeglass chains, and silver heels. Fun accessories gave a youthful feel, with mini handbags, complete with fur trimmed handles – a hint of the classic Ozlana aesthetic. Shoe options included clean white platform sneakers worn with transparent sheer socks, and pale pink gold buckled mules lined with fur. Models were styled with a certain girlishness, with floral face tattoos and textured teased hair in high ponytails.

#GRLPWR, Femininity, Singledom, and Ego (NYFW FW18 2018) - New York Fashion Week

Why am I single? This is a question that I continuously ask myself. If it were up to me I’d have been married, or engaged, or at least in a meaningful relationship by now. I’m thankful that isn’t the case though. Only at the ripe age of “now” am I starting to understand that I have a greater life mission and purpose to fulfill. If I would have married, held an engagement, or dated someone(just about anyone), I would have been lost into society’s constructs and Karma that I’m so trying to “break free” and “deprogram” from. These programs would have been regurgitated by my spouse, boyfriend, SO leading us to divorce before I even had the chance to become or know the person I am today. Thank god my parents never instilled that marriage programming onto me that is so very prevalent in today’s world and across cultures; the kind in which parents want their children to marry by a certain age or have kids by such and such time, or just so they (the parents) don’t need to bear the “shame” of their child being “single and unwanted” or just down right “ugly” for society. My parent’s never controlled my love life or my perceptions of love all too much except for the age gap relationships I was in (but my parents themselves have a gap too. So with that said, that advice didn’t last long. I was also secretive about my relationships so I never had much of an influence by my peers or parents.) To start off, my parent’s have their own love Karma “programming” to overcome. I never truly had a prime example of a happy marriage and couple in my own personal life growing up. The programming I’ve been instilled with by my parents were that of, “if you do this for me then ill love you. If I just lose a little more weight then i’ll be seen as beautiful. If I do the chores then that equals my self worth.” And on and on with a construed sense of self. I’ve come a long way to overcome such limiting beliefs and thought patterns emplaced upon me by my parents. But these patterns are passed on through the generations just like addictions are. And so there is family karma at play that many souls are raised into. In the way of love – and life – my parent’s haven’t taught me much of anything LOL. Now I realize that that isn’t such a bad thing. Painful for the majority of my life, but It has led me to think more for myself and learn anew without prior preconceptions.

I had to write this post over because I never wanted to focus just on #GRLPWR even though my outfit speaks #FEMININE. To me that is a label and I don’t like labels all too much because that tries to box one’s infinite soul up into a limiting word, idea, thought. Being spiritually minded, we are all one and the same with both masculine and feminine energies residing within us. I never got lost into all of the gender and race issues and movements out there that tend to separate us rather than bring us together. I saw a post the other day on Instagram by someone I follow who is “nesting” for her baby girl’s arrival. The whole nursery was pink and all the clothes were stereotypical “girl” clothes along the range of black, white, pink, red, and of dresses mostly. This just screams programming. Souls are born into this world but are conditioned from the moment they are born. That’s probably one of the first programs placed upon us; “blue” or “pink”? Girl’s toys or boy’s toys? Anger started to arise from within me. Why do I feel angry? I see what that sort of conditioning can do and how limiting a scope it places onto a soul. In a sense it takes away our power when others tell us who to be and how to act and how to think before, we as souls, had the chance to decide for ourselves in this physical reality. But this is socially acceptable in our society and unknowingly we continue to follow these restraints that bind us and divide us. We aren’t just a gender. But I think that’s also where my singledom comes from. I don’t wish to conform to societies stereotypical views towards “women” and “men” that continue to linger on between the ages and between the shared words with the bros and the gals over the hogwash conversations of cheaters, liars, and gold diggers. I’m not saying their isn’t truth in the pain. There is truth in these experiences, and it is true to whoever believes in these conditioned programs. If I were to think I’m a male who was born female, well that would be true for me. It might not be the truth for someone else. I just choose to step back and see the greater picture of it all and how little all of this even matters. Sometimes I too am subjected to this way of thinking by others. And unfortunately I too experience sexism and such. These experiences have been true for me, but I don’t approve of it. Just as I don’t approve of men who have lots of programming they must first overcome before coming into a relationship with me. It is not my work to accept someone’s pain and entire life programming as I climb my way out of the trenches of this matrix. When my cat died I was going to give a piece of my soul essence or time here for my cat to live on. But I was reminded that what is mine is mine, and some things we can’t sacrifice of ourselves for others. I can not give my power away for some other soul to live on. We must accept that we can’t save everyone.

“By letting go it all gets done” Lao Tzu

Life leads us to surrender sometimes. I think not many people understand the term, “surrender.” Surrender to some might mean “to give up”, but it also means “let go and allow.” As I have walked my path, I have started to feel disappointment and unsurety of where I’m supposed to go next. What was in the past has been true, but since my 24th birthday back in September I have been feeling unsure of where to go next and what I’m meant to be doing. The thing with PURPOSE, is that it’s always being redefined.

The more time that has gone by, the more unsure I got and the more painful it became to stay the same and encounter the same disappointments. Like a butterfly trying to leave it’s cocoon but stuck in the same old shell.

The part of being human is that we have worries. Eventually we have worries. I’ve been worrying about my future, how my mother plans to move away, how my finances will be, how I want to live my life and who I want to spend it with, how I want to be purposeful, wanting to reach the level of success I envision for myself, and how i’m on borrowed time to achieve what I set out to do but yet still limited by my finances. And yet perhaps its my psyche, but I always have felt like needing to “catch up” in life. I was held back in Kindergarten due to my learning disabilities. Perhaps that’s where this mindset began. I didn’t want to waste time, or be left behind compared to my peers, or left behind on my own vision. But yet the “older I’ve become” and the more I continue to “fight” my way to my dreams.. I still encountered disappointment. Disappointment with magazines breaking ties, disappointment that my photos that I spend so much time and money to travel are not credited properly, disappointment where models cancel on me, or other creatives don’t see my vision. If they see my vision, many of them are “across the pond” shall I say. They are in a different world; different ecosystem.

Originally this was going to be time to rest and rejuvenate before I attended NYFW and Grant Cardone’s 10XGrowthCon (which I had to cancel), but instead I was led to surrender all of my worries and dreams. To take time for me and explore my own spirituality. Call it a reattunement if you will.

Before I “officially” decided to go down my Photography path, I was out in California connecting deeply to my spirituality in solitude. Spirituality is important to me and at the time I wanted it to be a part of my life. But as I came back to NY, somewhat disappointed, somewhat thrilled to be home with family again, I decided to follow Photography and fashion. It was a vision I had years prior in my teens but people aren’t conditioned to follow their dreams in this society and instead are bombarded with other “loftier goals” like which job will provide a decent amount of security.

Anyway, I think spirituality and fashion are somewhat antithesis’ of each other. Fashion is often tied to Consumerism and Ego, yet spirituality is often associated with letting go of the Ego and consume less. During those almost 3 years I focused more on fashion and disregarded my spirituality; it’s just something that’s not typically seen together. During my 2 months of surrender, I became more attached to my spirituality, wanting it to be more than something on the sidelines. Perhaps my purpose now is to combine all these fragmented parts into one. To really redefine who I am and what I want to let go of.

Oddly enough I feel my spirituality has been rejuvenated during my state of surrender. I may not still be able to answer all of my worries right now, but I definitely know that it is time for me to combine my spirituality and wear it on my sleeve. It is who I am and what I’ve come here to do. It might disrupt an industry and the world (perhaps that might be too big), but in reality, I think that’s how all the greats made their name and made it to be memorable; they all chose to be different; to be who they are.

I am going to trust, let go, and surrender to what is good for me. What is good for me will come into my life and bring me to new heights. It really is my time to live abundantly. I want to continue to speak my truth and “be real” with you guys and gals. It’s okay to feel sad and disappointed. I want to show you the side many people are afraid to talk about but shine a positive light on it.

Fashion week is always a hectic time. This season I decided to really minimize my time and expenses at Fashion Week. In the past I would attend every show that came my way, but having been covering a few seasons, I’m at the point where I just want to cover the shows I really want to attend. If I’m not getting paid to cover the shows and I spend a lot of time, energy, and money taking trains and editing photos with little to no returns, then I’m going to go to the shows I want to or feel I can reap great gains from. Meeting like-minded people is always a bonus at those shows and events. And sometimes great friendships are forged without the intention of exploiting my talents.

I think sometimes it’s difficult to convey your soul story in a few simple words and sentences and expect people to see you as more than one thing. At least this seems to be where I’m at right now in my life. I’m a Photographer and Influencer, but I’m also many things contrary to the world wanting me to describe myself as only one thing I do. Am I a Photographer? Am I a Blogger? What one thing am I to the world? Can I say I’m a Prisim? I believe my soul runs much deeper than how I appear to others.

My other friend mentioned to me the other day that I represent a prism. And I feel that deeply in my soul; hence the name, “Prism of Soul” that I’m currently going along with on my social media handles. I like fashion, photography, art, philosophy, Asian culture, and spirituality. I want to combine them all because that’s what makes me who I am. I am not just one thing. I am multidimensional; a soul who is speaking her truth. I’d much rather be valued by my character than by my achievements or just the things I do… so I won’t bore you with the things i’ve done; perhaps its the humbleness in me, but i’ll let it speak for itself in the posts I write and let you decide.
