you slumped onto the bench, letting out a deep sigh. it had been a full day spent with niki, exploring his hometown just as he had promised long ago when he guaranteed to show you the beauty of japan, his motherland.

it so happened that he had taken a few days off during cherry blossom season, and now the surroundings were adorned with pink flowers.

he settled down beside you, chuckling at your evident exhaustion. the two of you sat in comfortable silence, you enjoyed some much-needed rest while he admired his surroundings, feeling content with your presence.

"ありがとう*," you suddenly spoke, your heavy eyes fluttering open to meet his gaze.

"what?" he responded.

"thank you for the tour, i had a great time with you," you said softly, noticing how his cheeks flushed a shade similar to the trees, his ears turning bright red as he quickly averted his gaze.

"no problem," he murmured softly, his voice barely audible over the gentle hum of the busy street.

you didn't reply, closing your eyes again and resting your head on his shoulder, unaware of how this simple gesture made his blush deepen even further.

as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over both of you, niki found himself stealing glances at you, his heart fluttering with emotion. "y/n, there's something i need to teach you if you want to speak japanese," he said, catching your attention, but as you looked at him, you realized just how close your faces were.

then, you heard his voice, speaking softly into your ear, "私たちは前から友達だけど、実は好きになった*," seeing your confusion, he smiled gently, his hand now cupping yours. "you would say that if you were confessing to someone," he explained, his voice barely above a whisper.

your eyes widened in realization, your cheeks flushing. in that moment, it felt like the world stood still, niki still holding your gaze. you could sense his nervousness because of your silence, so you quickly shook off your spiraling thoughts.

"how do i say that i like you back?" you finally whispered, almost immediately noticing his smile growing wider.

it begins with you and the rest of enhypen gathered together, either watching tv or simply hanging out. the activity itself isn't crucial; your attention is solely focused on jungwon, who slowly selects a tangerine every five minutes, peeling and eating it by himself.

after finishing one tangerine, he catches your gaze and offers you a warm smile, sharing a piece with you. without having to ask for more, he's already choosing a new one, carefully inspecting it to ensure the best quality for you. the rest of the group remains occupied, unaware of jungwon's hand practically being stuck in the bowl of tangerines on the table.

upon grabbing one, he notices you engaged in conversation with jake. without disrupting your conversation, he peels the tangerine and passes half of it to you. without much thought, you accept it, savoring the sweetness of the fruit. when you finish, jungwon hands you another half, enjoying his own portion.

“you want more? i’m already full,” you hear his soft whisper right next to your ear, as he still doesn’t want to interrupt your conversation. 

"can you pass me one more?" you inquire, anticipating him to hand you a tangerine still in its peel. several seconds pass, and he hasn't given it to you, but you noticed him reaching for it from the corner of your eye few seconds ago.

glancing in his direction, you observe him struggling with the peel. he looks up, a small smile and a gentle blush on his face. "one second, y/n," he says, placing another piece of peel on the table.

"i could've peeled it for myself, won," you remark, and he shakes his head.

"your fingers would get sticky; mine already are from peeling the previous ones. just relax and wait; i'll do it for you."

sitting in the living room, you were mindlessly scrolling through tiktok, your boyfriend doing something in kitchen. the trend of peeling oranges for loved ones was slightly forgotten already, but you still saw some videos of couples trying it. 

after a moment of contemplation, you called out to heeseung, "hee, do we have any oranges?" the shared flat briefly fell into silence, only to be broken by his simple response, "yeah." it was the simplest word, yet enough to bring a smile to your face, sensing that your idea might come to realization. 

calling out again, you asked, "would you mind peeling one for me?" this time, there was no immediate response. a few minutes later, heeseung entered the living room with an orange in one hand and a small plastic bag in the other. he sat beside you, his shoulder brushing against yours, and without uttering a word, he began peeling the orange.

"do you even like oranges?" he inquired after a while, his tone carrying a hint of uncertainty. you chuckled softly, the puzzled yet adorable expression on his face melting your heart. he was onto something; you weren't particularly fond of oranges. 

"i'm just craving one, you know?" you replied, and he raised an eyebrow, familiar with your habits. however, without adding to the conversation, he handed you the orange, laughing at your reaction when it turned out to be too sour. in the end, you ended up giving him most of it, prompting his laughter to echo even louder.

you and jay just finished your dinner and are now both tidying up the table. as he places the final plate in the dishwasher, you lean against the kitchen counter, observing him. he glances over at you, tilting his head, sensing that you have something on your mind. "what's up?" he finally inquires.

"i'm in the mood for something sweet. do we have anything for dessert?" you pat your stomach, and he chuckles softly, moving closer to you. his hands rest on your sides as his thumb gently caresses your skin.

"what exactly are you craving?" you shrug in response, uncertain about your dessert preference. he laughs again, walking away to open the fridge. "i could make a fruit salad," he suggests, his eyes focused on the contents of the fridge.

"that sounds tempting," you reply, and seconds later, jay pulls out every single fruit you have. you observe as he peels oranges, bananas, and even apples. whenever you offer to help, he playfully pushes you away from the kitchen counter, mentioning something about treating you like the princess you are.

he tastes a piece of each orange before adding it to the bowl with the other already chopped fruits. if it's even slightly too sour, he sets it aside and peels another one. after a few minutes, he brings a spoonful of the fruit salad to your mouth, feeding you and relishing in the smile that lights up your face upon tasting its sweetness.

"sweet enough?" he asks, and you simply nod in response.

the concept of the orange peel theory isn't just about peeling an orange; a perfect example of it is your boyfriend, jake.

jake, whos love language is taking care of you. jake, who stops in the middle of the street to tie your shoe after noticing that it loosen only a little bit. jake, who always opens door to his car for you and buckles your seatbelt. jake, who applies ointment to your ankle when you hurt yourself. jake, who’s ready to carry your shopping bags. jake, who always grabs your hand while crossing the street. jake, who kisses your arms after a tiring day. jake, who opens bags of chips, cans or anything else before handing it to you.

jake, who’s now peeling another orange for you, while watching a tv show in living room. jake, who’s eyes follow you when you suddenly stand up and leave the room, coming back with a pack of wet tissues. 

"why so suddenly?" he asks, shifting his gaze from the tv to you.

"because you already do so much for me; it's time for me to do something for you," you reply, locking eyes with him. he leans in, giving you a short kiss.

"but you know i don't want anything in exchange?" he questions, and you tilt your head, earning a chuckle. "i don't do it because i want something back. i do it because i love you, and it just feels right to do the smallest things for you."

"after all, opening a door or buying flowers is nothing for me, but it brightens your day, doesn't it? as long as my little acts of kindness bring a smile to your face, i'll continue. your smile is what i want in exchange," he explains, making you smile brightly.

you bring a piece of orange to his mouth, which he takes without hesitation. "thank you, jake," you whisper, and he kisses you again, the taste of the orange lingering on his lips.

sitting on the couch, tired after work, you look over to your boyfriend. his eyes almost stuck to the screen of his phone. 

“hoonie, can you bring me the fruit bowl from kitchen?” you suddenly ask, making him look up at you. he stares for a few seconds.

“no,” he says, silence filling the room, as you’re left taken aback. seconds later, he puts his phone down and stands up. he comes back with the fruit bowl you asked him for. he places it in your hands. 

you still look at him, puzzled, but his eyes are again focused on his phone. when you look away, about to grab the orange, his hand stops you. without a word he just grabs it, taking it away from you.

“i was craving one, actually,” he says, his usual teasing tone evident. too bad it was the last orange in the bowl and he knew it. this is what you thought he was teasing about. you furrow your eyebrows, but then grab an apple to bite into it. 

you already took few bites of your apple when sunghoon hands you peeled orange. it’s not the greatest peeled orange you ever saw, some chunks of it missing, only showing how hard it was to peel. you look over to him, his eyes glued to you. 

“you dont want it?” you ask and he shakes his head, then taking the orange to separate it into half and then pieces, bringing one of them to your mouth. 

“c’mon, angel, you can eat it.” he says, reassuring you that he really didn’t want it. 



. . . ⇢ ˗ˏˋ kim sunoo 김선우  ✩

“sunoo, what is this box doing here?” you call out to your boyfriend from kitchen. there’s a suspicious looking box on the kitchen counter. you hesitate in opening it, not knowing if sunoo wants you to see what’s inside. 

shortly after, he joins you in the kitchen, looking even more suspicious but sporting a bright smile. "go ahead, open it," he suggests, now standing behind you with his hands around your waist, his chin resting on your shoulder.

you cautiously open the box, revealing neatly cut, assorted fruits arranged in a bento box. some adorable fruit forks are stuck into a few of them, indicating that sunoo indeed put in the effort.

"do you remember mentioning yesterday that you were craving oranges?" he asks as you glance over at him. "i bought some this morning, along with a variety of other fruits. and when i saw these cute forks, i couldn't resist getting them too." he picks up a fruit fork featuring my melody from sanrio and brings an orange to your mouth. you quickly grab it between your teeth.

while chewing, you also take a fork and offer another orange to sunoo. he chuckles and takes a bite as well.

"thank you," you express after a few more bites of the shared fruit. he simply shakes his head, silencing you with another piece placed near your mouth.

you settled down next to niki, who was engrossed in his phone. he didn't glance your way, clearly immersed in whatever he was doing. meanwhile, you held an orange in your hands.

“niki, could you peel this for me?” you inquired, feeling oddly nervous.

once again, he extended his hand without looking at you, ready to receive whatever you placed in it. handing him the orange, he finally glanced your way when he felt its texture, tucking his phone away.

“what?” he questioned, a puzzled expression on his face. you chuckled, further confounding him.

“could you peel it for me?” you repeated, and he shifted his attention to the orange. without uttering a word, he dug his nails into the peel, prompting a smile from you.

“the things i do for you; i was literally texting my manager about this collaboration,” he remarked, handing you the peels.

“you passed the orange peel theory, though!” you quipped, and he looked at you again.

“the wha– oh my god! it just squirted on me!” he exclaimed, wiping orange juice off his face and laughing upon hearing your laughter. after both of you settled down and you wiped the remaining orange juice with your thumb, you clarified.

“the orange peel theory is about small acts of service. if you're willing to peel an orange for me, i figure you wouldn't mind tackling more significant tasks or something like that,” but he interrupted you.

“y/n, what the hell, i would literally chop down an orange tree for you if you asked me to.”

your arguments didn’t happen so often, the relationship you had with niki was closer to peaceful. but when they happened it tended to get tense. especially with your boyfriend losing his temper and saying stuff he doesn’t really mean, which also occurred this time.

“niki, i’m just telling you that you need to rest,” you urged as he settled on the couch beside you. having observed his exhaustion, as he came back home, you could tell he practiced more than he should by how he went to bed straight after stepping his foot in your shared apartment, you expressed concern. “you barely ate today, i’m just worried about you,” placing a gentle hand on his thigh, you awaited a response.

but niki remained silent, seemingly organizing his thoughts. recognizing the need to give him space, you sat in quiet contemplation, studying his side profile.

“i don’t need your nagging every single time that i get home tired, this is my work. i thought you got used to it by now,” he retorted, his words piercing your heart.

"please, just tell me what's wrong," you implored, but his volume escalated.

"how many times do i have to repeat myself? i. don't. need. your. nagging." each word accented with frustration.

he looked at you, genuine anger in his eyes, as yours conveyed confusion and sadness. you didn’t know what to say, his anger caught you off guard; previously, he hadn't seemed bothered by your concerns for his health. unsure of what triggered this outburst, you refrained from further conversation, knowing it could worsen the situation.

so, you just stood up, quietly leaving the room. your heart ached. but you basically couldn’t do anything, your boyfriend was too stubborn, you knew you are not able to talk him out of this. you entered the bedroom, sitting down on the bed you just thought what could happen or maybe some of your words hurt him? you began to spiral in your thoughts, overthinking everything you said since niki arrived home.

as hours passed and night fell, you heard niki moving around the house. however, he never entered the bedroom where you sat. a heavy sigh leaving your lips, as you realised you need to be the one breaking the silence between you. when you stepped outside the room, you bumped into someone, which you quickly realised was no other than niki.

surprised, you both made noises, and he quickly moved away, his hand poised to knock on the door. apologetic and regretful look on his face, he spoke, "y/nnie, i'm sorry. i was just extremely tired. i didn't mean to burst out like that."

"it's okay, riki. you're allowed to feel tired; you're human," you reassured him with a weak smile. seeing your forgiveness, you noticed how the weight was lifted from his shoulders.

"is it okay if i hug you now?" he asked, your smile widened, and you agreed.

"of course," and with that, he quickly pulled you towards him, pressing your cheek to his chest as he tightly embraced you.

"i'm sorry," he repeated as you wrapped your arms around him.

"there's nothing to be sorry about; it's okay now," you assured him. pulling away slightly, he kissed the top of your head. niki mumbled something, which you just couldn’t make out. after asking him to repeat himself, he did so with pride and clarity.

“i love you, y/n.”

smiling into his chest, you squeezed him slightly. "i love you too. let's go to bed and talk, okay? i want to hear about your day." looking up, you witnessed your boyfriend's beautiful smile spreading across his face.

the bustling market was alive with the vibrant colours of fresh produce, the melodic calls of vendors, and the rhythmic hum of daily life. it had been months since the breakup, and the wounds were still healing. as you strolled through the market, surrounded by the aroma of spices and the laughter of shoppers, you never expected to run into sunghoon.

sunghoon—your ex-boyfriend, the one who first introduced you to the beauty of love. too bad, that sometimes people don’t have time to continue on with their relationship. after few months of dating, you noticed that sunghoon barely spent time with you, always leaving your messages on ‘read’, ignoring your requests to hang out or go on a date.

you understood that his job required him to be present almost 24/7, but if other members of his group had time for friends, personal activities that had nothing to do with their job, why sunghoon couldn’t find even an hour of his time to spend it with you?

confrontation wasn’t easy, since it was hard to even talk to him. one day he found time for facetime and you felt awful to have this conversation over phone, but your friends reassured you that it wasn’t your fault.

“sunghoon, can you please go to your room? i want to talk about something personal,” you asked, noticing that your (then) boyfriend was sitting in his dorm’s kitchen while other members of group were talking in distance.

“sure, snowflake. give me a second,” his smooth, angelic voice – a momentary solace for your recent emotional wounds, surfacing as you came to the realisation that this relationship was on it’s finishing line.

a little bit of sounds of rustling and seeing only sunghoon’s forehead later, you saw him setting his phone on desk, finally in his room. “go on,” he said and maybe you were happy that he couldn’t see you in real life, as tears formed in your eyes. you blinked them away.

“sunghoon,” you started, raising suspicion in him, as you used his full name again and not a pet name. “i think we need to end this,” the words barely left your lips, as your heart started physically hurt.

“oh,” was the only thing he was able to say. it stung – the fact that his initial reaction wasn't to question why or argue that he could improve and fix this relationship. “okay.”

the more he spoke, the more it pained. which was quite ironic, because he hadn't spoken much.

“okay,” you repeated, not really knowing what to say. you just wanted to hang up on him, throw your phone away and cry while curling in ball on your bed.

"i'm going to hang up now," he stated, his gaze shifting away from the phone. a shaky exhale escaped his lips as he redirected his attention to the screen. "thank you, y/n. i appreciate everything," were his final words before he finally ended the call.

and now there he was, standing near a fruit stall, his eyes meeting yours with a mixture of surprise and nostalgia. time seemed to freeze for a moment, and the air was charged with unspoken emotions. after a long break from each other, the universe had decided to weave your paths together once more.

sunghoon's gaze lingered on you, and as you approached, the awkward silence was broken by a hesitant smile. the years of knowing each other and the couple months of being together flooded back, the memories playing like a bittersweet symphony in your mind. despite the pain of the past, there was a flicker of warmth in sunghoon's eyes, a silent confession that some feelings don't easily fade away.

"i didn't expect to see you here," sunghoon said, breaking the silence. his voice carried a mix of emotions, which you couldn’t distinguish.

caught off guard, you managed a polite smile. "it's been a while," you replied, a subtle acknowledgement of the time that had passed since your lives took separate paths.

in the midst of the market's vibrant chaos, you couldn't escape the heaviness of the unspoken words. eventually, sunghoon mustered the courage to broach the subject that lingered in the air.

"i still care about you," he confessed, his eyes revealing a vulnerability that mirrored your own.

you nodded, appreciating the honesty but wary of the emotional terrain. the scars of the past were still fresh, and reopening old wounds seemed full of dangerous risks.

"i care about you too," you admitted, the admission hanging in the air like a delicate secret.

jungwon stepped out of the kitchen for just a moment. upon returning from work, he promptly agreed to assist you with dinner. however, as he realised he needed to change, a loud crash of breaking glass and your startled exclamation drew him out of the bedroom, still in the process of putting on his shirt. he managed to finish dressing before entering the kitchen, but as he stood in the doorway, you stopped him.

“wonnie, wait! there’s glass everywhere,” you warned him but your calls didn’t seem to stop him from getting closer to you. he easily manoeuvred his way through the shards, reaching out to touch your hands.

“god, y/nnie.. what happened?” he asked. the pain was unbearable, yet you managed to endure it. when jungwon touched the inner part of your hand, you couldn't help but hiss.

he recoiled quickly, hands in the air. "i was trying to reach for this cup, didn't realise the other one was in front of it. i just didn't see it," you explained, and he listened. "i tried to catch it, but i didn't make it in time, and the glass cut me."

once again, your boyfriend held you, this time by your wrist, guiding you toward the sink. he turned on the water and, before placing your hands under it, checked the temperature.

as the blood washed away, he hummed. "thank goodness there are no deep cuts or glass pieces stuck. you need to be more careful, love."

jungwon instructed you to wash your hands slowly with soap while he cleared the glass on the floor and fetched the first aid kit from your bathroom. returning, he turned off the water, prompting you to sit on a chair. crouching in front of you, slowly and gently bandaging your wounds. 

you observed how his hands moved cautiously around yours, as if afraid of causing more harm. it was as if you were so delicate that the slightest touch might break your skin. unconsciously, a smile formed on your lips.

"thank you, jungwonnie. you're the best," your whisper made him look up. his eyes seemed to brighten as they met yours—the smile that healed not only your heart but also every wound.

"be careful next time. i may not be the tallest, but it's better if you call me when you need help, okay, honey?" he advised, unaware of how much this seemingly small gesture meant to you.

"should we order something?" sunoo inquired as you both relaxed on a saturday afternoon. you shifted your gaze from your phone to his face and shook your head.

"honestly, i'm craving ramen. we can just make that," you replied. with your answer, your boyfriend nodded, removing his arm from around your waist. he stood up, and you quickly followed him to the kitchen.

while sunoo opened the door, your eyes remained glued to your phone screen, as you were finishing reading an article that was praising enhypen’s new album. you and sunoo were always very supporting of each other, but with more and more months of being together, you had become the biggest fan of sunoo's stage character. this passion led you to create a twitter account, where you shared your thoughts on new songs, posted pictures, and simply gushed about how sweet sunoo was.

lost in the article, you accidentally banged your knee on the half-open door and your first response was to bend down and grab the hurting spot with your free hand, but misjudging the distance, you also ended up hitting your head. sunoo turned back, puzzled, at the loud noises. yelping in pain, you straightened up and looked at your amused boyfriend.

"what did you do?" he asked, a smirk playing on his lips

"i don't want to talk about this," you protested, placing a hand on your throbbing forehead.

he then laughed, pulling you into a hug. his hand resting on your head, pressing you to his chest. he kept laughing at your clumsiness while you tried to free yourself from the tight grip. “it’s not funny!” you said, voice muffled.

"well, it is for me," he chuckled, his hand gently caressing your head, causing you to slowly melt in his arms. "how much does it hurt?" he asked as he pulled away, planting a kiss on your red forehead.

"a lot," you admitted, and as sunoo kissed your forehead again, you blushed. “thank you,” you whispered, feeling warmth spreading to your cheeks.

"be careful, please," he insisted, his lips moving from your forehead to your cheek.

“can we forget about this and just make ramen?” you suggested and he moved away with a smile on his face, now turning to the kitchen counters.

"i can make the ramen; you sit and rest. i don't want you to hurt yourself again, bubba," sunoo insisted, and you obeyed, enjoying watching him move around the kitchen with ease.

“y/n we’re going to be late!” niki's voice echoed from downstairs. the boy decided to take you out on a proper date this time. while your usual dates were casual, niki wanted to treat you to a nice restaurant, as he wanted to make it special.

not that you were complaining. you enjoyed every date niki planned; his ideas were usually very cute and just comfortable. full of laughter, fun and pure love. but when he insisted on calling this one a "real date," it unexpectedly brought on a wave of anxiety, despite you and niki being together for a long time.

"y/n!" he called again, and you knew you had to head downstairs before niki could get mad, which rarely happens. you left the bedroom, dressed in an unexpectedly elegant outfit – a departure from your usual attire for outings with your boyfriend. it was also the first time you'd see niki dressed similarly.

the shoes you wore added height, and as you hurried downstairs, you realized you weren't accustomed to walking in them. (since it’s gender neutral, you can either imagine platforms or heels, the choice is all yours) as you ran downstairs, your heel missed a step, causing you to tumble down the staircase. unfortunately, you were almost at the top of staircase. niki watched, frozen in place, as you went down, the fall seeming to stretch on forever.

it was happening so fast, you couldn’t even grab the railing, only a few seconds after, trying to slow down by using your hands. finally stopping on the last step, tears welled up in your eyes, the pain being unbearable. niki chuckled initially, but concern quickly replaced his laughter. "baby, are you okay?" he rushed over.

"do i look okay, nishimura?" you retorted, attempting anger that your wobbly voice betrayed.

"it's okay, y/nnie. grab my hands, please. i'll help you, okay?" niki could read you well, understanding you needed him right now. "oh, you big baby, stop being grumpy and let me help you," he added when you hesitated.

with a heavy sigh, you took his hands. "you were supposed to be my knight in shining armor and catch me in time," you huffed.

he only shook his head and guided you to the couch so you could sit down. your hip was hurting so much, it was impossible to walk correctly, so you slightly limped. niki quickly noticed, grabbing your waist and using more of his strength to help you. 

when you sat down, another heavy sigh left your lips. niki, uncertain of his role in taking care of you, stood there, unsure. usually you were the responsible one, taking care of him when he’s hurting. the roles were never reversed, so he was just lost. 

"can i see?" he finally asked, eyes on your hip. "we need to check the damage after your close encounter with our stairs," he said, earning an eye roll from you. after a moment, you nodded.

when niki uncovered your bare skin, he gasped. "baby, this is insane. it's not even on your hip; it's all over the side of your thigh," he said, making you look over. for some reason the boy reached out to touch it and the fear of him touching it was enough to make you scream. 

“are you insane?” you squeaked, moving away from niki.

“y/n, do you think me, your amazing boyfriend would ever hurt you?” he asked and you gave him a serious look. “okay, back then i hit you with the ball by accident.”

"you literally yelled, 'y/n, catch this,' and then decided to throw the ball with your full strength." his silence spoke volumes. "go grab ice from the freezer, wrap it with a thin towel, go to the bathroom, and grab the ointment and bandages. my hands are all cut up," you instructed, and he hurried to comply.

it took him a while, maybe if he remembered everything it would be easier. but finally he returned with everything. he tried to gently put the ice pack against your skin, but well.. niki wasn’t the best at taking care of bruises like that. 

“oh my god, niki. i will kill you,” you said, when the pain doubled after he not so slowly and not so gently touched your bruise with hard and cold ice. 

"i'm sorry, i'm sorry," he quickly apologized. "here, call the restaurant and tell them we won't make it," he said, passing his phone to you, contact to the restaurant displayed on screen.

“but, niki, you really wanted to go–”

“are you insane?” he repeated your previous words, “we're not going, not when you're hurting like that. we can go another time; you're more important than good food.” 

“you're the best—DON’T POKE IT, ARE YOU STUPID—”
