Crossing Paths: Animal Omens
We all hold on to some superstitions from our childhood. The age-old âbad luck when a black cat crosses your pathâ idiom has likely followed you from slumber party ghost stories into your adult life, albeit a bit outdated. But what about other animals? What does it mean when an animal crosses your path? Is it a warning? A sign of good things to come? A message from a loved one passed on?
In Greek Mythology, animals were almost always associated with a specific God or Goddess. Artemis with the deer, Athena with the owl, etc, etc. This made it so that interactions had by mere mortals with animals were painted in a certain light. These âomensâ while certainly nothing new, are still relevant today, or at least we like to think so.
Last weekend, while we were camping in Mammoth Cave National Park, our campsite was a meeting ground not only for us friends, but for a whole slew of deer. Morning, evening, and night, multiple deer grazed around us as we dressed our hotdogs and played innumerable games of YAHTZEE. They would come in groups of three most often, one joining another, and then another joining the other two. Then slowly they would move on, looking for more places to spread their good vibrations.
Our first night at the campsite, it rained...and rained...and rained. I am always one to have quite intense dreams, and they tend to only get more vivid when itâs storming. In the tent, I dreamt of an owl, swooping down into the tent after leaping from a tree above me. Omen? Maybe. Alien abduction? Possibly...especially if you are someone who saw âThe Fourth Kindâ and is still freaked out by it a decade later (which I totally am). Regardless, I choose to hope it an omen so that at the very least, I get to keep my sanity.
In this post, we will talk about the some of the animals you are most likely to come across in your daily life, and what sort of message they are trying to send you when they appear.
Seeing an owl is a bit of a complicated thing. This is because an owl can be a symbol of something bad or good that is about to happen, either way, whatever it is that is coming, is going to be BIG. For witches specifically, the appearance of an owl can be a warning that your magick is currently harnessing a lot of strength. When this is the case, it is important to not be reckless with oneâs magick and to be extra cautious when calling upon certain entities to aid us in a spell or ritual. There is potential for something to go awry.
Much like the owl, spiders are also associated with Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom. Opposite of owls, however, spiders harness positive energy and are good omens all the time. In fact, they are typically a sign of companionship, a sign that a friend is soon to appear.
Additionally, spider webs are thought to be good luck in that they are a reminder of how interconnected we all are as creatures living on the same planet. A small artwork in a work much bigger than itself, webs encourage us to see the similarities between ourselves and the nature around us.
Cats are creatures of intuition so when you come across one out of the blue, itâs important that you ask yourself if youâre being entirely honest with yourself lately. Is there some aspect of your life that you have been not listening to your gut about? Are you constantly fighting the feeling that something is off when it comes to your relationship, your job, or your ambitions?
Crossing paths with a black cat may not be bad luck, but it certainly is a reminder that you may be avoiding that little voice in your head that only has your best interest at heart. Additionally, casting spells or completing any sort of magick when you are not currently connected with your higher self is risky, so avoid practicing until you feel youâre connected with yourself once more.
White Cats: symbolize fertility and change in romantic affairs
Orange Cats: symbolize different planes of existence and spiritual travels
Black Cats: symbolize the change of Luck (for good or ill) and Wisdom
Grey Cats: symbolize a change coming that will result in a better life.
Crows are another creature, like cats, that donât have the best reputation when they appear. Often people consider crows and ravens to be symbols of death or horrible news to come. While this is sometimes true, the more important thing that crows bring is a message of truth. Crows were sacred to a number of Greek deities including Apollo (the God of Sun) and Hera (Queen of the Gods).
In ancient times, it was believed that crows were a great symbol of truth, and that when someone sees a crow cross their path, they are ready to finally receive that truth, whatever it may be.
Goddess of the Moon, Artemis, held deer very close to her heart. In fact, it was said that she constantly had a deer as her closest companion as she would move in sweet solitude through the forest (sounds idyllic, right?)
A deer then and now was a symbol for the seer that the universe is aware of their current situation or suffering. However, it also advises you to keep going, offering a promise that things will not always be the way they are now. You can prevail, you just have to continue to be determined and fight the fight as best as you possibly can.
When you were a kid, you likely only associated rabbits with Easter or that bummer of a Disney film, âBambi.â Regardless, rabbits bring their own messages when they appear, and it isnât a Cadbury egg.
Rabbits are known for their fertility, as they have the ability to reproduce at rapid rates. Therefore, when a rabbit crosses your path, it is a great omen for fertility and abundance.
Additionally, rabbits are even more mystical than they are often given credit for as some believe they are fairies or good witches who have been transformed.
In other words, when you come across a rabbit, changes are soon to come and they are sure to be very advantageous.
Just as there are certain tarot cards that point the querent in the direction of analyzing their dreams, there are certain creatures that send this message as well. Lizards are discreet and strong, and when your eye catches one of these incognito reptiles, itâs a symbol that something in your subconscious needs attention. In other words, you need to go to the pond where your subconscious pools its water: your dreams.
Consider buying a dream journal or recounting your dreams into a recording device to listen back to and analyze later on.
Snakes donât have the best reputation in general and we have to admit, weâre not really excited about the possibility of running into a snake while weâre out and about. Part of this has to do with the fact that snakes themselves are a bit intimidating, but the real issue I have with them has to do with a cobra my father got tattooed on his center of his stomach that he has sported since I was just a few years old. Yikes, people. But I digress.
When it comes to a snake as an omen, however, the reality isnât quite as jarring as my childhood trauma. Snakes are a reminder of the power that is held within all of us. Snakes are passionate creatures, and only create an issue when their backs are against the wall. So when you come across a snake, yes, you may first want to hightail it out of there, but later on, remember to harness your power and push forward as that is what the snake is encouraging you to do.
