Things that run in the House of Finwe:
Good hair
Being dramatic
Fits of craft-related madness
A love of jewelry
Choosing violence
Impressively good hair, even by elvish standards
The willingness to fight a Vala
Stubbornness
Heroic deaths
Being infuriatingly good at things
Hair that is suspiciously perfect even after crossing the Helcaraxe, hanging from Thangorodrim for thirty years, thousands of years of being a beach hermit, etc.
Unexplained, vaguely mystical powers
Autism
big tshirt that says MY INTERPRETATIONS MUST HAVE A STRONG BASIS IN THE SOURCE MATERIAL on the front and THIS IS FUN TO ME on the back
Overdue for a Revival: Chapter One
Part of the aurë entuluva series
Thunder rumbles again, far closer this time. A wolf howls on the wind. Something strange sits at the back of Amras' mind, even as he parries another blow and drives his sword into an orc's stomach. A wolf? There's no wolves in these parts. Another howl, far closer this time, and then another, a chorus of noise- His blood runs with something that he dare not call hope.
Those aren't wolves. That's the baying of hounds.
Scheming finrod for prompt ❤️
Back in the time before, in the time of the Trees and their youth and their blissful innocence, Finrod’s mother had kept a three-legged snow-cat.
Snow-cats, of course, were not domestic animals and further, were not suited to confinement like the peafowl and kingly swans of Finarfin's aviary or even the placid camelids that Lalwen kept in landscaped paddocks behind her estate. But Eärwen had found this one with a paw trapped in the door of a hen coop - it had, of course, been in hot pursuit of Finarfin’s Warble Silkies - and the limb was so mangled and broken the beast had been unable to flee even once freed. And the paw had gone rancid and rotten and so Eärwen had given it poppy milk to drink and then done the amputation with the family’s best feast-day sword and sewn up the wound with golden thread and a silver needle (the house of Finarfin did nothing, not even mending, without flair.)
The cat took long to heal and when it did it was unsuitable to return to the wild, especially as it had grown prone to following around tall elf ladies in hopes they would give it chicken, and so she had consulted Lalwen and built a paddock of her own. The cat, not being a camelid, soon grew restless in the green enclosure and it would pace and yowl and try to chew its own leg or worse, when they came to look at it, on Eärwen’s children.
So Eärwen consulted with her seamstresses and her sisters-in-law and at least one of Aulë’s artificers and she made woven ladders of hemp and hung vegetable marrows on the ends of string and created a sort of steeplechase of bridges and hammocks and blinds up trees. She also briefly introduced an automaton, commissioned from the very pleased artificer of Aulë, that looked like a sheep, made a noise like a furious duck, and moved like a drunken and very fast crab, but this overexcited the cat and caused it to chew its own whiskers off so she eventually removed it and left only the bridges and the ladders and the root vegetables.
And the cat made happy noises and chased shadows up ladders and lived to be 67 when it died in its sleep of dreaming too hard.

“Yes,” said Orodreth. “I remember.” And, “Finrod, I don’t understand why you’re telling me this.”
“You asked me - ”
Orodreth held up the piece of paper Edrahil had brought them, with the list of names and dates and a lot of gleeful punctuation. “I asked you why you were indulging them. Why you continued to let them plot clear insurrection and try to turn our people against us. Why you engage in those ridiculous sessions of doubletalk with the one and let the other bait you and pretend you don’t see he’s doing so. They are playing games with your kingdom, and you are sitting back and letting them do it!”
Finrod propped his hands under his chin. “Hosting Fëanorions is like husbanding three-legged snow-cats,” he said. “They need proper enrichment, a safe enclosure, and if their toys get too complicated they’ll hurt themselves.” He sighed wistfully. “The hard part isn’t keeping them entertained. The hard part is knowing when to stop.”

possibly one of the most hilarious exchanges on doctor who
Honestly all the conversations between the Daleks and Cybermen in this episode were fucking gold
I know nothing about Doctor Who lore but I feel like the Cybermen and the Daleks are both the descendents of two exes who both designed robots.
You haven’t even seen the best one yet (or at least, it wasn’t in this reblog chain):
Power couple
Melian squeezes his arm, and continues their slow walk through the morning dew. “But we have this. For now. It’s enough.”
Ohhhh, this chapter was so beautiful. What a perfect last line for the peace years. And what a wonderful friendship Melian and Maedhros have built! Never in a million years could I have predicted all the twists and turns the Thread verse has taken, but I have loved every one (and am already eager for the next!).
Now that the kids are all grown up and taking on responsibilities, I’m looking forward to seeing them in action. And Elwing has her twins! Really curious how all that’s going to go, but I already love your Elwing just from the glimpses we‘ve gotten so far.
Bc it‘s been a while and I got inspired, here‘s a moodboard for the entire Endure for eyes to see series:
I‘m a little sad that the peaceful interim is over, but it was lovely while it lasted. I‘m so attached to your Beleriand, I honestly dread the war of wrath (and am very excited). But first, Tyelko gets to yell at his god/boyfriend (?) which I also can‘t wait for.
As always, thanks for sharing your stories with us!
I am also a little sad that these peaceful years are coming to an end! I've honestly gone back and forth a lot on how much War the War of Wrath is going to be, but I've ultimately come down on the side of honouring one of Tolkien's themes: nothing can last forever, and change can be mourned but should not be fought relentlessly against to try and preserve something that is not built to last forever. The War of Wrath will be big and full of fighting, but in the themes of the thread verse, whilst it may not all be on the surface the happiest ending ever where nothing and nobody changes, it will all mean something.
Elwing has been such an interesting character to develop and write, and there will be more of her growing up- thematically it made more sense to go to the Celegorm story first, but after that we will be jumping back a bit and seeing snapshots of both her and Earendil growing up. This will then give context to the story that follows after, in which we, and Maglor, gets to meet the twins.
Elwing, like Turin, is another great example of nature vs nurture and how much upbringing affects someone. Elwing in canon lives through the sack of Doriath and of Sirion, the decay of Beleriand and constant danger from not only Morgoth but also their kin. Beleriand is fractured and dangerous, the Noldor have fallen apart politically (hard not to when most of their rulers are dead and the ones left are held by the Oath) and everything is Bad.
In contrast, in the thread verse Elwing is born into the most stable period of Beleriand that has ever existed. The Noldor are a political and military powerhouse that has fulfilled the Feanorion Oath and have political control or influence over most of Beleriand. Doriath is a stable and thriving kingdom with not only solid political and economic relationships outside of their own kingdom but personal friendships with the other ruling classes in Beleriand (Maedhros and Melian, Dior and Maeglin, Ereinion and Elured and Elurin, Turin and Beleg). It's all good! It's great! She is the princess second in line for a throne that will never pass to her, and all the heroes in the stories she grew up hearing, all the heroes she idolises, are still very much alive and ruling these lands. Maedhros Feanorion is right there.
It's a lot for a young person to try and work out their place in the world when they are not only living in a time of the most complete peace they've ever had, but the people who brought that peace about through heroism and sacrifice and duty and love are very much still here.
Anyway. Lots of thoughts about Elwing, and we will get to her! But first, yes, Celegorm needs to get to yell at his god boyfriend a bit, and I am so, so very excited for it.

“Maedhros Fëanorion. It’s been a while.” Maedhros smiles. The sun is just rising over the mountains far to the east, and the dew on the grass glimmers as he walks through it, dampness clinging to his ankles. Melian is waiting for him just by the treeline, a shawl of deep green wrapped around her shoulders to ward off the lingering chill.

I love Celebrimbor the material scientist, the research engineer, the quantum physicist. I love the idea of him teaching his apprentices with equations on blackboards and thumbnails on scrap paper before work begins in the forge. I love him running his forge like a research lab with unlimited funding and so much time. I love Celebrimbor and Narvi’s collaboration depicted as academic co-authorship. I love Eregion the university town, where scholars hold conferences and students hold informal debates in little bars. I love Eregion as a sea of curiosity and willingness to learn, with strong undercurrents of academic drama (iykyk). I love Eregion as the city of progress, but the right kind of progress, that exists in sync with the natural world, and yet elevates life beyond what nature alone can offer.
I really, reallyyyyy need friends who read the Silmarillion to ramble with 😭
I look around and there's this super cool community of people on here, but everyone is a super talented artist or a cosplayer or a writer or everything at once and I am just. Standing there.
WHO FUCKING CARES COME TALK TO US WE ARE NOT CELEBRITIES WE ARE LOSERS WHO LIKE ELVES!!!!!!!!
project hail mary is a touching and poignant film that leaves you asking questions about humanity like, "wow what if all mainstream media was genuinely good" and "what if book adaptions actually gave a shit about the book in question" and "what if studios hired actors that could actually act, and then let them get a lil wacky with it"

Ryn’s tail is still steadily drumming a bruise into Maedhros’ leg, not made any better by how he keeps scratching at her back. “Forge accident,” Celebrimbor says, and his tone of voice makes Maedhros pause and look up. “Uncle…what is that in your arms?” “Oh no, Tyelko, you didn’t,” Fingon says as Maedhros, something prickling across the back of his neck, sits up and turns to see Celegorm standing behind him. He looks the same as ever, windswept and tanned from endless riding out beneath the sun. He’s grinning, and his arms are cradling something wrapped loosely in a blanket. As Maedhros watches the blanket moves, and then a tuft of fur peeks out from within.
Fun fact: James is quoting Maxim #133 from Baltasar Gracián’s Art of Worldly Wisdom (1647).
(English) (Spanish)
#this fucking!! scene!!!!! #it’s not as essential as other cut scenes like swann song (awe) or the rumrunners’ isle (cotbp) #but it’s so so rich in character detail #elizabeth as lore-keeper #james quietly horrified at the consequences of an arguably well-meaning colonial man’s actions #(hint: it’s a pretty fucking direct parallel) #and then a roundabout acknowledgement of just how badly he fucked up in between movies #and how dark and guilty a place he’s in now #and elizabeth looks at him in genuine shock because of all the things she might have expected to hear from her old friend’s mouth #she was not expecting such bald despair and self-loathing #and for one moment they just stand there taking stock of one another; what they’ve become because of their actions & despite their pasts #it’s the first real; honest; unshrinking connection they’ve had since…ever? #g o d #it’s been years and this scene still brings out my rambling tag novelist #also the fact that james knows baltasar gracián well enough to quote it fits into some hyperspecific headcanons of mine re: theo groves #but that’s for another time (via @dying-suffering-french-stalkers)
