Emily’s eyes followed Luke’s finger to the puddle of blood in the dirt, and her eyebrows raised, listening to him explain that he’d cut the werewolf before the creature had gotten away. She nodded once; he could be waiting to ambush them, though if he was injured and bleeding, that was unlikely–unless he thought it was his last chance. Or maybe he was angry. So she followed Luke, keeping an eye out and ears listening for signs of a trap, as they went. The path led them deeper into the forest, when suddenly, the trail of blood stopped. And then a shadow grew over Luke, and the werewolf dropped from a nearby tree, onto the hunter–unless he’d managed to move away.

Even after saying the werewolf might be waiting for them, they had human intelligence after all, Luke was still caught unawares by the damn thing. He saw the trail stop and he froze too, which of course the creature had anticipated, and had waited right above to leap down. It was wounded but so was he, and he fell easily, cursing as he tried to keep the werewolf off him enough to not get gutted while also getting his gun facing up at the thing. After a too-long moment of struggle he managed to get a shot off that grazed its side and the thing scrambled back, hopefully enough for Emily to get a good shot since the thing had been too close to Luke for her to shoot at before. 

“Well, I don’ got no family or home left anymore so huntin’s easier f’er me.” He conveniently left out the fact that such a dangerous job was perfect for someone who didn’t care much about whether he lived or died. “Plus, I w’s a soldier. Huntin’s similar.” He’d found it a surprisingly easy transition, though with hunting it was a lot harder to tell friend from foe, to search out a specific individual enemy rather than ‘whoever shoots at you.’
