Please can we talk about the movie “Shock Treatment”?
Released in 1981, Shock Treatment is a dark comedy and the follow-up to “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. Although not a direct sequel, The film features several of the same characters including Brad and Janet as the main characters and several actors return as well.
The film is vastly ahead of its time, as the entire movie is set indoors of a TV studio and if you didn’t know better you’d think it was a parody of reality TV were it not for the fact the movie came out almost 20 years before reality TV even existed.
The movie was filmed during a Screen Actors Guild strike which means the cast and crew were available for EXTREMELY limited amounts of time. Originally the movie would have several scenes around Denton, but with the strike it was instead re-written to take place entirely inside the TV studio, which added to the criticism it had against 1970s “TV culture”.
The rewrite and a change of filming location to England meant they could shave an entire $1 million off the film’s budget.
These days its largely overlooked or completely forgotten which is a shame. However, it’s also understandeable as it was simply incapable of escaping from Rocky Horror’s shadow.
The opening line of a smiling woman saying how Denton has “happiness and smiling faces and tolerance for the ‘ethnic races’“ still cracks me up though.
