Today marks the release of Belle & Sebastian’s wonderful new album and one of its most memorable tracks is “Enter Sylvia Plath”, named after the tortured 20th century writer. Famous for her dark, confessional poetry and mythologized by her tragic suicide at the age of 30, Plath became an icon for angsty youth and budding wordsmiths everywhere, inspiring Stuart Murdoch and many other artists along the way. Here’s 20 songs referencing or inspired by the life & works of Sylvia Plath. Listen to the mix on Spotify.

John Green, Crash Course (Literature)

One of the things I’m really interested to see in The Hobbit is the relationship between Legolas and Thranduil. Because Legolas has to have a reason to run off with a mixed group of non-elves to save a lot of non-elves, right? Mirkwood elves don’t seem to be the most open-minded.

Ernest Hemingway’s letter to his mother (Sept. 1914). The letter reads:

"Dear Mother, I got your card thanks very much. Our Train was 2.25 minutes late!! so no school. The Program is all changed around lunch at a different time and alot of other changes. There was a report circulated around that I was drowned and some of my pals thot I was a ghost. May I PLEASE have SOME LONG PANTS. Every other Boy in our class has them, Lewie Clarahan Ignatz smith and every other little shrimp. My pants are so small every time I wiggle I think they are going to split.
