Unlike their common wombat and southern hairy-nosed wombat cousins who are much more abundant in numbers, the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii) is one of the rarest land mammals on Earth and was once considered to be a fully extinct species before a small group of living individuals were rediscovered in a single national park in 1930!
