Have you ever sat down and really thought about Guardian dragons? I mean, they’re super cool no doubt, really harken back to those traditional western/European style dragons, but there’s just something about them…

What if Guardian dragons are one of the most mentally fragile dragons on FR? I mean, think about it. Everything about Guardian dragons is about the Search, discovery and protection of their charge. It’s even in their freaking name. It even says in the lore that a Guardian isn’t even considered a true dragon by the rest of its species unless it finds a charge and those that fail to protect their charge are shunned and would rather die then to live with the shame. That single minded focus does not a healthy mentality make.

A guardian caring for a living charge has a mind in a constant balancing act. They exercise great patience and self-restraint in order to protect their charge without smothering them. As such, losing a charge is an extremely traumatic event for a guardian.

Most guardians will lose all motivation to live, likely starve themselves to death if no one else is around or waste away from heartbrokeness.

However, some guardians will go into denial and that is a very dangerous state of mind for a guardian. These are the guardians most liable to snap and undergo a most horrible transformation.

Dubbed ‘Coffins’, these guardians wander Sornieth in search of a nonexistent charge. They are forever crying and have lost the ability to see and to fly so lumber along with the use of their wings. Curiously, their underbelly undergoes a transformation, losing their horned plates and becoming rib-like protrusions. These rib-like protrusions are mobile and surround a bright gem-like stone on the guardian’s chest thought to be a manifestation of the dragon’s heart or soul.

The Coffins have so earned their names for they will capture beings that they have mistaken for their charge within their “ribcage.” It is thought they do this because the Coffins desire to recapture the feeling of warmth and comfort that being with their charge brings them. Unfortunately, creatures unfortunate enough to get caught within a Coffin’s ribs die due to suffocation or strangulation.

And so healthy mental care is very important for guardian dragons. The imperative of the Search can be very taxing towards the mind and many Guardians exhaust themselves in looking for their charge. It is generally dragons that were not born naturally as guardians and those that have had exceptionally long Searches that are susceptible to becoming Coffins.
