Harry Potter is the smallest eleven year old Severus has ever seen — his glasses are bigger than his face and his robes, though perfectly tailored, nearly seem to swallow him whole. Severus watches curiously as Harry looks down at his own hand, looks back at him, and then casts a quick glance around the Great Hall that lingers briefly on Mr. Blaise Zabini at the Slytherin table.
There’s a brief moment of confusion, what is the boy doing?, and then it hits him — Harry was looking at the colour of his skin. His brown skin, Snape’s brown eyes, Blaise Zabini’s brown lips.
A skin colour not as common in Britain, much less in Scotland. A homogeneous pattern, only occasionally broken up. The realisation makes Severus feel strange, like this means something to the boy beyond what he can understand.
He isn’t surprised when Harry Potter sorts Slytherin.
