Key Concepts from the Semester and How they Affect UOGE

 Learning to See by H.S. Scudder
Scudder’s article was about how one of his professors in college had him study a single fish specimen until he could tell his professor everything about the fish he was studying.  If Scudder was looking for one specific quality about his specimen, then he would have missed a lot of other information.  Also, if Scudder did not spend as much time studying then he would not have been able to find out as much unique traits. Â
Observation applied to UOGE Â Â Â Â
The longer we observe natural gas pipelines and wells, the more we will learn about them and their effects on the environment.  When observing these things we need to make sure that we don’t just look for specific flaws, but make sure to pay attention to every aspect of the UOGE structures. Â
Significance of Observation
Astute observation could help with finding environmental accidents, like natural gas leaking into ground water, much quicker. Â It would also be possible to avoid most accidents with vigilant observation. Â Another benefit will be learning how to better build and maintain pipelines and wells, because flaws in the prior structures should be noted and fixed. Â
 Replicating the TEA Laser by H. Collins
This article was about how the first TEA lasers were built and the problems that arose when trying to replicate the process.  It shows how instructions aren’t always remembered correctly if they aren’t documented properly.  It also shows how easily mistakes can be made and simple mistakes can be missed when dealing with new/specialty sciences and technologies. Â
Documenting Instructions applied to UOGE
Documenting the process of building natural gas wells and pipelines will ensure that gas companies will build these structures correctly or know what they changed about the process if there was an accident. Â It will also ensure that there is a standard for each well and pipeline to be built according to. Â Also documenting the instructions will make learning the building process much easier for new companies to learn. Â
Significance of Documenting Instructions
Keeping well documented records will help future generations understand the process of building and give them reference to earlier attempts at UOGE. Â
The Curse of QWERTY by J. Diamond
This article gave the history about how the modern keyboard came to be, the QWERTY keyboard, and how it is not as efficient as the Dvorak keyboard.  The main reason that the QWERTY keyboard was chosen to be mass produced was because it actually required the typist to type slower so they wouldn’t jam typewriters.  The reason that we still use the QWERTY keyboard over the much more efficient Dvorak keyboard is because the first mass produced keyboard used QWERTY and it is just what people are already used to. Â
Technological Innovation applied to UOGE
UOGE technology is constantly changing and being innovated.  If there’s possibly a safer way to drill for and transport natural gas, then the gas companies should be using that technology over the current well and pipeline system, even if it is less cost effective.  The amount of money that gas companies would save in not having to pay for maintenance and recovery after accidents would make up for higher building costs. Â
Significance of Technological Innovation
If the gas companies could create a safer, more environmentally friendly technology for drilling for and transporting natural gas, then people might be more likely to let the companies use their land.  Also, technological innovations could benefit the companies making them more efficient, resulting in higher profits.  Lastly, technological innovations are significant because hopefully one day scientists will create a sustainable energy source so we won’t be reliant on drilling for fossil fuels. Â
