The Dinner Dates are disbanded.
It’s sad but true: The Dinner Dates were officially disbanded as of April 7th. My apologies for the delayed notification of this news, but I wanted to have a clear idea in my head of what direction the channel would be headed in first before I wrote this post. As of today... I’m still not entirely sure what the direction will be, or even if videos will continue to be produced for the channel at all.
The reason for the disbandment comes down to a matter of “motivation.” Which is to say, none of the members of the group seemed to have much of it left when it came to making content for the channel (myself included). Our real lives / careers have always taken priority [as they should], and there came a point where we realized there wasn’t enough free time between us to commit to long-term plans we had made for the channel.
For example: Hbomb had a number of planned series set to debut on the channel in late December last year, which I had hoped would bring in a new audience to the channel / help in maintaining a steady flow of content. As it turned out, Hbomb found employment which apparently consumes every waking moment of his free time, and his planned videos were soon scrapped. This was an especially devastating blow to the channel; not only because we had made something of a big deal of his joining The Dinner Dates, but also because I had planned to hand the channel off to him down the line. That plan too had to be scrapped.
And so, rather than continuing to pester the staff on a bi-weekly basis asking if anyone is “working on anything” (which most times was met with no acknowledgement anyhow), and rather than pretend that The Dinner Dates could ever continue as a group effort, I decided to disband it. It’s my ship to steer again, and I may just end up choosing to steer it into the sunset never to update again. After all; I can’t pretend I’m much interested in continuing to produce videos for it myself.
I cannot stress enough that I have no ill will towards Bag, Tag or Hbomb for not prioritizing our goofy little YouTube channel. They have much better, far more interesting things they could / should be doing, and I wish them luck in doing so. I myself have a number of exciting opportunities on the horizon, and I’ll probably be selling off the last of my free time as well to pursue them. Seeing as I’m the sole content creator at this point, and with those outside opportunities in mind, that unfortunately doesn’t leave... Well, anyone at all to contribute regularly to the channel. That’s a bummer, innit?
I started doing video game videos because I enjoyed the editing aspect of them: They gave me footage I could record and edit without having to operate a camera. Truth be told; for as confident as I am that I was pretty pretty good at commentating, I don’t actually much enjoy it, and would have much rather edited someone else’s narration over all those hours of gameplay rather than record it myself. By the time our mission statement had become “non-offensive commentary over offensively bad games,” I was confident that my compatriots could carry the torch, but circumstances conspired so that I never really got the chance to hand it off.
I could take the opportunity here to thank our fans for sticking with us and all that sentimental jazz. But like I said: In spite of my lack of personal motivation this past year, I’m still not quite sure if I’m fully and truly done with the channel yet. I still want a bit more time to decide on what direction to take it, or to maybe even see if it can be run under trustworthy “new management.” I’ll update all y’all again as the situation develops.
