When the moment comes, it’s very simple. The Harpers and the Fist upstairs and Jaheira here, who fought so hard for them. June and Shadowheart, whose lives together can now begin. Wyll and Duke Ravengard, and a gaping void of power in Baldur’s Gate.
A principle she has had to explain to many a paladin, but never a wizard: if you don’t understand a threat, how do you really know if it’s gone?
There isn’t time to reason it out, why Mystra would prefer blood on her hands, knowledge lost. Following the will of the gods is mostly intuition, and Aliafer has always trusted hers.
“You can’t do this,” she says.
“I choose you,” he says, and her stomach lurches: that isn’t the choice she meant to pose. But it’s what she said, isn’t it. Maybe not what she meant, but what she said. And he chooses her, the way she couldn’t quite ever say she chose him.
But there’s a different god to deal with just now. June strikes the killing blow, but the crumpled form of Ketheric Thorm falls at Aliafer’s feet. He cries out for his god and receives no answer.
+
The gods don’t just answer. That’s what people who profess no particular faith don’t understand. They don’t just answer, and the Lady of Mysteries least of all.
When she sees Gale pacing in the corner of Moonrise, apart from the exhausted celebrations, she readies herself for a torrent of guilt. But he’s too much like her: on to the next thing, his mind consumed already by the sight of that crown—the promise, as he clutches her shoulder, caresses the back of her neck with his thumb as he speaks, that they haven’t ruined everything.
And in the shine in his eyes, Aliafer understands. There was always another way. Mystra must have known of this, must have feared the death gods and the Elder Brain. Must have known there was indeed only one person who could defeat it: Gale, with his lifetime of study of Netherese magic, with his prodigious talent and skill.
Intuition. Is it as Gale says, her anger and envy, keeping him from this second Netherese artefact? Forcing him to choose death over the temptation of power?
Or does she fear what will become of him if he tempts fate a second time? Was his death to be salvation from destruction?
There are things that can destroy a mortal soul, rend it in too many pieces for a god to collect and bring to their afterlife. Becoming a mindflayer, of course, is one such thing.
Do you understand, she wants to say, testing her thumb against the points of the star of Mystra in her pocket, the chain of her holy symbol snapped during the fight, that you cannot chose me without choosing her, too?
Does he understand that for her, Mystra is not a lover, not a mentor, not even a muse? She is the ever-present sensation of the Weave; she is the promise of mysteries to uncover; she is the feeling of knowledge settling itself into understanding after hard work and study. All the things that wizards know and seek to master, she feels, she worships. That is what they share, not the mere name of a goddess, not paired holy symbols that they carry.
Does he understand?
“There is another way, a better way, for both of us,” he says, and she has to believe that he does.
“I think that sounds like an excellent idea,” she says.
idk man there is something powerful and amazing about how you can play the same story but just imagining a different little dude experiencing it completely changes everything

Had the pleasure of being part of the baldur's gate floral zine and drawing shadowheart!
GTA Minthara 🕸 I had A LOT of requests to draw Minthara and I'm gladly obeyed. I love this woman so much. It was a very fun trend to draw and I hope I'm not too late with the second piece (I'm so slow artist, sorry)
Ship Tournament, Round 1 — Match 23 / 30
Jaheira/Nine-Fingers
"These two so obviously have some history. I'm not saying it's romantic or sexual history, but it's history, and that invites thought. There's some tension between them, that could be interesting in a romance."
"Jaheira calls her 'Astele'. Nine-Fingers left an offering for her."
vs. Gale/Minthara
"They’d challenge each other in places where they actually need it. Gale can get so wrapped up in guilt and grand gestures and magical destiny that he forgets he’s allowed to just live. Minthara would have absolutely no patience for him dressing self-destruction up as nobility. She’d call it wasteful, which is maybe the least comforting possible wording, but also exactly the kind of thing that would cut through his spiral. And Gale would push Minthara too, because he’s genuinely curious about people and he loves conversation and he can be very emotionally brave once he stops trying to turn everything into a speech. He’d ask questions she isn’t used to being asked by someone who isn’t trying to control her. I think she’d hate how much she likes having someone intelligent look at her and want to understand the person under the armour."
Which ship do you prefer?
Jaheira/Nine-Fingers
Gale/Minthara
Not to be a bitch but sometimes people engage with fiction in the most boring way possible, and nowhere is this clearer than in videogames. Like what you mean you hate a character just because they were kind of abrasive when speaking to the player character? "They were mean to me" and it didn't occur to you to wonder why? Like, what might their attitude toward you reveal about the world? About the social dynamics within it? About their own perspectives and backgrounds and personalities? Does it even occur you to ask? Would you only have liked them if they bowed to your presence and talked about how great you are? Like I'm sorry but you're so boring. How boring fiction would be if it cathered to you

I cannot take it when ppl describe shadowzel as enemies to lovers. They literally aren’t??? Shadowheart is consistently racist to Lae’zel in a way that stems from a very specific trauma, Lae’zel responds with justified indignation and frustration to nonstop one-sided antagonism, and then eventually by the end of the game they’ve kind of cooled off to grudging tolerance. I see so much content that frames their early-game conflict as UST rather than what it is, which is Shadowheart repeatedly antagonizing Lae’zel from this place of watching githyanki kill her cult coworkers while Lae’zel responds to this provocation with the irritation of someone who’s got a mosquito buzzing round their house.
Also the fact that people say they would bond over their evil goddess cults just totally erases both of their arcs? Shadowheart’s trauma stems from being Shar’s personal favorite little toy and dedicating herself to a mission she does not believe in; the natural continuation of her arc is her figuring out who and what she wants to become. Lae’zel is start to finish deeply committed to her community and upon being betrayed by Vlaakith is like “I need to return to my collective and make it a better place.” Those are genuinely polar opposite sentiments. Shadowheart disavows her entire belief system; Lae’zel commits herself even HARDER to the githyanki.
I think this ship would work under certain circumstances and it is actually really compelling and sweet to imagine them learning to understand each other, but what I see most often is people just happily erasing the complexities of two of my favorite BG3 women to create this milquetoast UST-thru-violence snark-to-lovers dynamic and it just makes me so so mad. They are so much more complicated than that!!!!
"... But when he next faces temptation, will he have the strength to resist?"
Hi it's me, creampuff gobbler again, contributing to my pile of shart-art :)
Yes she has dark hair and side bangs so it probably means she did the shar route?? Oh well she looks she could dethrone selune in this one so I don't care <3
"You might only find a pile of ash, but I'll be there all the same."
